record your journey! through journaling or photos, of the little and big moments.-- there are times where I miss certain memories with my friends but I didn't take photos or lost them and can't remember vividly as I'm getting older hh. #2 start something, an app, youtube, a business or club, in college is where you'll have all the resources and support you need! professors and organizations within reach and are happy to help. Also alumni networks! and People will teach you how to do everything. And you get to use your professors as free advisors! You can't do that in the real world, people don't have time and aren't obligated to help. I attended a University only 10 miles away from my home (small town Mississippi) and still stayed on campus lol. I made it through my whole 4 years with my virginity intact, without touching alcohol or drugs, held down 2 jobs, met good friends (which has currently fallen off lol) and I still had fun. The biggest advice is don't do anything you don't want to do to "fit in" and surround yourself with people who are okay with that. I had a blast in college!
Amen! I kept my virginity intact as well! Didn’t drink, smoke or do anything that I didn’t want to do! This is the most important advice because there were a number of people that ended up getting STDs or having abortions. No judgement, but a lot of bad situations can be avoided when you think for yourself and think about the consequences of each decision.

It’s ok to go to community college until you figure out what you want to do. This way when you change your major 1,000 times it won’t be as expensive. Also community college helps you avoid student loan debt. At least the big ones.
I’m currently attending community college not because I’m undecided, I just wanted to save money. After I complete my associates, my plan is to transfer to a 4 year school and work towards my computer science degree. I just completed my summer semester to give myself a head start so I feel like confident about that. :) I feel good going into this school year with a clear head.
@@Meg-cc6yc congrats on having a plan. Focus is key. and if you can do an internship b4 you graduate i think that will help you get started in your IT life.
@@desiraedoingthemost5339 I do, and he's a good kid. I swear sometimes things sound different when they don't come from your parents. Or at least offer some confirmation, oh ok, maybe my Mom didn't just make that up 😁
I was mediocre in HS... and so afraid of college... I didn't even like watching popular characters on TV graduate from HS... it gave me anxiety. I attended community college and then transferred to a university. College turned out to be the place I woke up from my academic coma... I loved it! I did well... made deans, chancellor lists... best time of my life. What I was afraid of... the independence and self-starting felt wonderful. HS in hindsight felt like jail.
Same! Hated high-school. Was mediocre and went to community college and found it more interesting. Now I'm in a degree I like I'm excelling getting A' s and made deans for the first time too.
“..young thunder..”😂. Study hard, have fun,do not apply for the credit cards( if still offered on campus). Stay away from student loans,if possible, because issa scam. There were 7 of us.We all started out at a junior college about 5 minutes from home & we all stayed on campus😂. My parents wanted us to experience on campus living before going to senior college plus it was less expensive. My mom was always popping up on campus with cookies and pound cakes😂. I loved it and think that many would benefit by attending junior college first.
Sending this to my college freshman.. I take him to college in 2 days.. He's my oldest, and my lil bestfriend. Im nervous, scared, however im truly excited for him. For he is a First Gen as well! Good Luck to all the future C/O 2025! May you stay focused, have fun, be safe,. And enjoy this next chapter of life!
I went to college in New York City, coming from a small town. I partied like a Rockstar my freshman yr then got kicked out second yr. I was doing everything but attending class. I stayed out until 5am the morning of freshman orientation and fell asleep soon as it started. I woke up one morning with some guy named "Turbo" spooning me, snoring in my ear after I went to a frat party🤦🏽♀️. Don't even get me started on the student loans that I treated like disposable income. I could go on and on. Listen to EJ she spoke pure facts!
With all due respect, what the fuck were you thinking? This is coming from a 19 year old girl lmaooo i come from a middle eastern family and I could never put myself, my safety, or my future in jeopardy like that. I can’t afford being stupid, but I know people who act like college is a vacation.
My big advice is 1) do the homework. Even if you don’t have to turn it in. Do it. Look up study guides online for the course content. Utilize the professors office hours. Etc. it’ll matter come test time and you’ll be glad you took the extra mile! And 2) no matter how hard the class is. Learn how YOU study and you’ll win the game. Everybody studies differently so take the time to learn how you best retain information AND the best way to study for each class and you’ll be on the deans list in no time!
1. Let your primary focus be learning YOU & the required learning. Don't be rushing for a relationship. Should you be sexually active use discretion & safety. 2. Don't even hold your drink out of your line of sight at a party or club. Sickos stay on prey mode, don't have a specific look, & can potentially pop up at any social function. 3. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS trust your gut. I don't care what anyone's telling you. If YOU know your spidey sense are tingling, don't ignore it. May God bless you & keep you. May He sustain you, grant you guidance, strength, & discernment. May you be healthy & safe. May you make many wonderful memories that warm your heart & make you smile for years to come. May you be unafraid to fail & learn from mistakes. May you retain empathy, focus, kindness, gentleness, & determination. May you enjoy this next phase of life to its fullest. I pray this for all who see it sincerely. Amen. 🙏🏾
Call your parents before they call you!! Something happened to my phone the 2nd or 3rd week my first year and I did not contact my mom about, I was free spirit just going to class and whatnot, I was sitting in my living room and the emergency landline phone started ringing it never did that, so my roomie and I just stared for like the 1st 3 rings then I answered, it was my mom on the other end 🤦🏽♀️ she called the university and had them patch her through to my campus apartment. She had a lot to say, lesson learned I call my folks now.
This is gold. Everything said is FACT. I was the roommate always tying up the landline in my dorm room my freshman year. (Look at me tellin my age. 😩 c/o ‘02) I was in my first relationship and we stayed on the phone. So much so, my roommate moved out mid semester and commuted from home. Second semester too. 😂 I had the room (and the landline when my cellphone was dead) all to myself. 😊
My mom and I have been telling my new freshman this for what feels like forever. I saw the title and as she was passing by I said, "EJ wants to tell you something!" Didn't think she would watch the whole thing, but she did. Didn't have to say I told you so. Just whenever you said something we'd told her, I gave her a little look and we'd laugh. Thanks for the reinforcement and for always keeping it funny!
Don't let these professors talk to you any kind of way. Some of them think they can size you up just because you're of a certain demographic. Let them know otherwise.
Good Lord yes! You are an "Adult" even if you're 17 if you're in college. Some of these professors toggle between talking to students of all ages as adults and children. My momma had one when she went back later in life that thought he was her parent & I had one who thought I was supposed to know it all (isn't that what I was there for, DROP). My online course: professor said "check in EVERYday because I might leave notes & assignments, did I say EVERY day, yes I said EVERY day". Wait, isn't it supposed to have a syllabus & is online for MY convenience? DROP!
I love that u mentioned the absolute basics- young girls---take an escort to ur car if u can at night, don't accept a random drink, no unattended drinks allowed, carry a fun bun etc. Young ladies---please.
Such good advice, especially about the parties. My daughter's freshman year, she went to a party. There was a girl there that was drunk but her friends left her. My daughter stayed with this young lady and made sure she made it back to her dorm safely.
Listen I done told my students, I have the debt so you don't have to repeat my mistakes. Lets search for better and less expensive paths to reach your career goals.
You won’t know anything until mid to late 30s. You will make mistakes, and it’s ok. Do things on YOUR timeline ( don’t worry about ppl Having babies and getting married right after college). You can party without drugs and alcohol. Do your homework and projects the MOMENT its been assigned. Also, study your notes after EVERY class ( you won’t need to study the night before…you can go and party the night before and ace the exam the following morning ).
Advice: if you can do a study abroad go for it, it's the only experience worth college debt! Take public speaking it's important and will help in interviewing for jobs after school! Connections can be important, keep them! School 1st everything else 2nd especially relationships (jus saying) Take a few flash lights and candles (black outs happen) Learn to cook, seriously you will thank yourself Set up a roommate agreement day 1!! Don't wait. Be cautious when rooming with a friend. Go to every free event posssible on campus especially the 1st week get to know other freshmen, they often feed you at fre events and you'll meet people you have stuff in common with if it's something you like to do,. International students can be really fun and warm.
Also, hopefully as you get older, you learn some MO' important things such as: whatever you thought was important at 20-25, aint that important in your thirties. Then if you reach 30s, is less important in your 40s. Muhammad Ali said (paraphrasing) if you think the same was in your 40s as you did in your 20s, then you wasted 20 years.
“You better go to class.” YES!! Recent grad here (2020) - I had so many professors whose main grading came simply from attendance. There were others who if you skipped their class, you were probably gonna miss like 5 chapters worth of info. One of the hardest things to do sometimes is to actually get up and go to class. Please keep the skipping to a bare minimum🙏🏽
I am so excited to have seen this as I am a hall director of a freshmen hall. All ladies and I will be sharing this with them at our next meeting. You were real and very helpful without being pushy. Thanks, you are one of my favorites on TH-cam.
As a person who finished my first year of college for interior design lol, it was at times overwhelming with the classes and assignments and just the college life in general. Just remember to breathe and feel okay to be vulnerable to talk to ur friends family etc. to help you REMAIN SANE
Loved this! As a parent it was extremely painful. I tried to convince our student (at 18) that community college would be best. That went on deaf ears, now those loans are kicking BUTT for THEM! Happily, our student survived the 4 years, with multiple degrees.
My advice is this: it is alright to ask for help, especially if you are mentally exhausted/finding it hard to adjust to a new environment/feeling pressure from your studies/etc. If mental health counseling is available, use it (this is coming from personal experience)
Research your professors. I remember taking an accounting class with a professor who was a former IRS auditor, our exams were IRS case studies. Homework assignments were excessive. Dropped the class within the window and took it with a more laid back professor. Got an A and a scholarship.
When my daughter went off to college (10 miles away) I got several calls and texts every single day! Stupid stuff like, I boo booed 💩 3 times today. I had to pretend to be concerned, asking questions like, "what did you eat? Did it look normal?. 😆 🤣 😂
I’m a rising junior now at my university and even though I heard all of this stuff my first year, to an extent I still feel like I needed to hear some of these things especially after missing out on a year due to the pandemic. Part of me still feels like I have a freshman mentality and that I’ve missed out on my “college experience” since this will be my first time back on campus in little over a year. My first year I didn’t do much as far as having fun or getting to know people and I told myself that I would change that come my sophomore year, but then COVID hit causing me to stay home☹️. I’m hoping that this year will give me a chance to make a name for myself in a positive way and help me grow in the areas needed. I will continue to be serious about my studies but I will also be sure to have fun and stay safe this during upcoming school year. I’m really excited 🙂. Great video !
Make sure you know how to do your own laundry. This includes knowing how to use the washing machines and dryers (especially if you have the old school ones where you have to feed them quarters).
Go to class Monday through Friday you can hang out Friday evening and Saturday recoup on Sunday. Believe me this will keep you grounded! If you try to kick it everyday you will end up on academic probation. Focus Focus Focus!! Will be the best years of your life I attended Kentucky State University and graduated with a 3.6 Last piece of advice if you are a female travel with other females to stay safe!! Good luck and enjoy your college experience!
Thanks so much for this EJ! I just dropped my only child off at college away from home. I am an emotional crying wreck, but this is all sound advice and things I've told her repeatedly. I'm sharing this with her as a reminder 👏👏👏.
🗣”GET SOMEWHERE AND SIT DOWN!”🤣I graduated years ago, married and got a baby…and my mama just told me this yesterday 💀Lawd. Great advice all up n THU this video 🙌🏾💯 PAY ATTENTION to the advice on them student loans y’all 👀
Great advice! I always tell soon to be college students, Focus on school, that's why you are there, Monday through Thursday or if you have a Friday class, it's all about school. Friday night, have fun. Saturday, sleep in, do two hours of homework, and have fun! Sunday, sleep in, relax, do some homework if you have it, get ready for school on Monday and do it all again. Have a calendar, make a schedule of ALL work that needs to be done. Do your work, go to class but also have fun! What's four years out of your life? If you live to be 100, you have 96 years of fun, remember that! Other than that, Go to your destiny and beyond! 💐🌹
I love your REALNESS..."I can say I wish someone would've told me about student loans, but I was so broke I wouldn't have listened" YES! Idk how many times I hear people say I wish I would've knew..but they wouldn't have listened because most of the time we are stuck on what we think we know.
I went to a commuter campus so I didn’t have the dorm experience. Make sure you network amongst your peers and professors. Whatever job you want to have, make sure you try to get some internships during the summer or during other breaks. Entry level jobs ask for 2+ years of experience and internships will be your experience. Build a good rapport with your professors because one day you WILL need a letter of recommendation. Have fun, go to class, make the most of it.
Sent this to my niece who is about to start the University of South Carolina. Go Cocks! She died laughing and shared with her freshman friends. EJ with the wisdom for the win!
Some solid advice here. Never leave your drink unattended and if you do, just like Auntie said LEAVE IT. Not everyone there is bright eyed and bushy tailed like you, someone could have dropped something in it, even the person you went with if you didn't know them from before. If it's dark, ask someone to walk with you, if there is no one to ask CALL someone and talk to them while you walk until you get where you're going! Campuses aren't impenetrable, anyone can pose as a student once they look young enough. But enjoy the journey and be safe and all the best to those starting out! 😁😁😁

PRAYING FOR ALL FRESHMAN THAT THEY MAKE IT BACK & BIG.....!!!!!!!!!🌟🌟🌟🎯😷🙏🙏🔥🔥🌟👍👍👍👍👍
Great advice! I would add this because it helped me and changed the trajectory of my life. Remember that loans must be paid back so try to apply for scholarships and try to get to know people in the financial office who you can harass for more grants. I had no shame. I was up in that financial aid office begging for money. With my begging and scholarships I graduated with only $10k after 4 years. That's the only reason In was able to go to grad school, get a car, a home etc. Loans can truly impede your quality of life down the road.
Wow EJ, this was so needed for our young adults. I am an instructor and a parent and I approve this message. I can't stress the importance of studying and residing in the library!! Being nerdy is the new sexy!! I also want them to respect their professors in person and watch that tone via email. Do what's asked of them in a timely manner and last but not least, don't have your moma nem calling or emailing me, I will not entertain them. Sorry not sorry. My undergrad professors were firm on that situation.
Also make sure you check the terms of grants and scholarships because if you decide to leave school early without graduating or get kicked out you may have to pay those back!
👏 This needs to be a pre college video that they show you senior year in high school. I was an introvert so I didn't do anything but go to class and to the cafeteria. That buffet style lunch and dinner got me my freshman year. Would I do it again? Nope. 4 and 1/2 yrs was enough, could have went to school for 18 months and would have had a job in my major. Live and learn.
Yaaaaaaahhhhh...EJ is humorous, but this was all facts. Some of the stuff she said will keep you alive...and not assaulted. Those college parties are treacherous. Young people, PLEASE, PLEASE, be careful. We love you all and want you to have fulfilling college experiences. You for real DO NOT have to drink to have a good time. Young ladies, pretty much NEVER go the Que House for their parties, and if you go to the Sigma House, stay away from the Blue Juice. If you are/were a church kid (you know who you are), take it slow. I understand that the freedom is intoxicating. But you green, people can see it. You will get taken advantage, oftentimes in ways that may really damage your psyche. Find you a church, or go to chapel, join the gospel choir. The cool part about college is that you can always find your tribe. This was a great video EJ. Congrats class of '21!
My best advice is to get it done with. I went through college in a dead run because I hated it but knew I needed my degree and I'm so glad I didn't drop out. Take at least 1 fun class per semester. Get a weapon, like a pocket knife or pepper spray and always have it on you. Most important, college is NOT the best years of your life. Maybe you don't get to go abroad or have the true "college experience" that's okay. Its the stepping stone to live a life that is authentically yours.
omg the humorrr as usual plus so much true wisdoms right there! yes time is on your side but it's not meant to be wasted!" use it well kids! it's true. before you know it you're out of college and 30 hh
Okay I love how you become the person in all your videos. This personality is giving me; I have been to the cute fly girl in college(shoulder out)and now I am spreading what I learned to y’all in how to maneuver this new chapter!!!!! 😂😂😂😂great points; especially “that cup belongs to the universe!!!!”
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If they are available to you and included in the tuition, use your university’s mental health services and career center. Ask your professors for help/direction outside of class when you need it. They are there to help. Don’t let yourself be counted as just another number. 💜
It’s OK to undergo change, but don’t forget who you are at your core. Don’t be intimidated by other people who may think they’re more mature or have it more together than you. Remember, all those people are about 3 to 4 years older than you, tnot 10 or 20 years your senior. So because of that everyone is trying to find their own place in the world even if that means stepping on you and putting you down to do that. They’re trying to fake it while they make it and don’t let anyone try to tell you otherwise. Also, no fraternity or sorority is worth getting your ass beat. A brotherhood/sisterhood is for life then just go to join a grad chapter. You’re there to learn not get whooped.
BABY, betweenn the parties and dudes. For the first two months me and my girls lost are natural-born minds. Pizza at the union and MickyD’s thighs were like I'm here!!
All the information and advice you shared i wish I would had taken with me when I went to college in 1975. I was alone at registration. This Queen has definitely spoken most of the truth I have encountered while I was in college. Please take heed to her advice. ❤😊🙏
Nice top ten. However, add one honorable mention...don't be embarrassed or focused on clothing. I remember I had this pancho (my favorite jacket) I wore every year. By my senior year of college, one of my frat brothers "scolded" me for wearing said jacket. He told me you know someone asked me if you are poor and why do I wear that same jacket? My response: Buy me one! And if it's too much for you alone, she can go in with you. (Just know I never got a new jacket)
Have fun, but work both smart and hard. Take a close look at your friends. There are multiple types of friends: party friends, study friends, long term friends, friends that become family. Study them, examine them, don't let a past image of them cloud what is current.
As a college English composition professor... I approve this message. Would I be wrong to ask my college to show this video a student orientation? Lol!
As someone who has graduated college recently, this advice is very good advice, especially about the student loans. I would even add that taking a gap year to earn money to pay for school without using student loans is a good idea. But, if you must go straight into college, I recommend never taking out private loans since those lenders can be more vicious than those who provide government loans. My other personal advice would be: 1. If you're going to college with the end goal of getting a job in what you majored in, major in something that employers in the field you're interested in are actually asking that you have a degree in. Remember return on investment should always be considered when attending college or any other paid educational institution. 2. Network with classmates and professors. Getting a good job is all about having connections nowadays. 3. Start internships, apprenticeships, volunteer work in your chosen field, etc. as early as possible. 4. Don't be afraid to ask for help. 5. Take advantage of study abroad. 6. If having a roommate isn't for you, it isn't for you 😂 Don't think it's going to get better with the next roommate. That's something I learned the hard way, and now I wish I got my own studio apartment sooner while in college. My mental health would've thanked me
Good information and wisdom. Thank you. I have an 18 year old who is not ready for college right now. He HAS GOT to get a job. Chill mode since HS graduation. I understand. It's time and he knows it's time. I enjoy your channel. God bless you.
if you're a procrastinator take your classes earlier in the day. you won't have half the day to change your mind about going to class....yeah i learned that the hard way lmao
Can I say that this was errrrrthang!!! I'm 52 and finsta be a freshman again. While my daughter is a Senior in College... I needed all of this. I'll keep my roomie's bidness to myself, but he better keep his hands off me and my side. Hubby plays too much! Good stuff, EJ!
Age is nothing but a number, you will do well my sister. Trust me, I know. Always put your best foot forward and professors love the seasoned students and their ideas on the matters discussed in class. Wishing you well.
Great messages and facts throughout this comment section! I want to add as someone who is an administrative assistant, do not overlook (or mistreat) the support staff in college! Administrative assistants, secretaries, receptionists, etc. know all the ins and outs! We know the who, why, when, what, and how and we can give a good word on your behalf with the 'upper-level' folks. We can be your best friend or your worst nightmare lol. So, talk to us with some sense and make it easier on yourself. Oh, and one last thing--tell mama and grandma not to call us and ask any questions about grades, class attendance, or anything else. I respect that they're paying your tuition but HIPAA does not care and I'm not going to jail for telling them you're flunking lol.
Try to work in your field while in school, ask the teacher of that department if you can be their assistant of help or just learn some additional skills to add to your resume.
These are so true! It's been a LONG time since I got my bachelor's degree. But the lessons I got from going away to college inside the class room & outside it have stayed with. I learned how to interact with many different people from all over state, which varies greatly depending on which region your from, self reliance, none of my family or friends went to the same school as me when I started with just me, myself and I. I learned how to create new relationships with a fresh start. I learned how easy it is to get distracted by anything & everything but like EJ says, go to class and do your school work. I made sure to remember what my main responsibility was at college, to get a college degree with good grades. Everything else fell behind that. Finding a local church at school is also important. Keeping faith and staying on course is vital. Lastly, my 2 biggest regrets were not trying to study abroad for at least one semester and choosing a major and minor that didn't pay much and was very hard to get a job in once I got my degree. The job market was rough when I graduated but it's much worse now. My college years were some of my favorite but I am glad I got through the. It's nice to have money and a career now!

It’s ok to go to community college until you figure out what you want to do. This way when you change your major 1,000 times it won’t be as expensive. Also community college helps you avoid student loan debt. At least the big ones.

This right here!! 🎯 i resonate with this SO much! Glad college was a better academic experience for you!

You in the age bracket with me. 😭
DROP!
Never had that happen to me.
I love that u mentioned the absolute basics- young girls---take an escort to ur car if u can at night, don't accept a random drink, no unattended drinks allowed, carry a fun bun etc. Young ladies---please.
Go to class even if you’re hungover!
Make connections!
Be careful with the student credit card!
Do things on YOUR timeline ( don’t worry about ppl
Having babies and getting married right after college).

School 1st everything else 2nd especially relationships (jus saying)
Take a few flash lights and candles (black outs happen)
Learn to cook, seriously you will thank yourself
Set up a roommate agreement day 1!!

As an incoming college sophomore, this video and comment section is so wholesome😊
When my daughter went off to college (10 miles away) I got several calls and texts every single day! Stupid stuff like, I boo booed 💩 3 times today. I had to pretend to be concerned, asking questions like, "what did you eat? Did it look normal?. 😆 🤣 😂
OH.MY.GAWD 😂😂😂😂
Your mental health is important. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, GET HELP!!!!! It's okay not to be okay and ASK FOR HELP!!!
Take advantage of campus services such as career planning, health services, the gym, etc. You pay for them in your tuition so get your $$ worth.
I knew a girl who skipped all her classes to have an online relationship with a guy she met online. She was kicked out of school by October.

I love your REALNESS..."I can say I wish someone would've told me about student loans, but I was so broke I wouldn't have listened"
YES!
Thank you E J. They won't listen to us cause we are the parents but you say the same thing and it's cool. Thank you for wise helpful advice!

I just sent this video to my granddaughter who's leaving for college next month.
Thank you EJ I couldn't have said better myself.
Whew those were the days. Miss em loved em glad i got my degree between all the fun and drama.
Thank you for doing this for all the kids, whether they have the support or not, entering the next stage of life.
I don’t even have my cap and robe anymore!
I just dropped my freshman off last week. He will definitely be getting this video!
Welcome to the comfy transition into adulthood

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If they are available to you and included in the tuition, use your university’s mental health services and career center. Ask your professors for help/direction outside of class when you need it. They are there to help. Don’t let yourself be counted as just another number. 💜
I’m 28 but my friends can track my phone. Someone should always know where you at. Someone whom you talk with everyday
I'm a jr now and loved this! Especially the food part. Got myself a crockpot( that I'm not supposed to have) so I can eat healthy like a normal human.

All the information and advice you shared i wish I would had taken with me when I went to college in 1975. I was alone at registration. This Queen has definitely spoken most of the truth I have encountered while I was in college. Please take heed to her advice. ❤😊🙏
Thanks. I have shared this with all my babies. this was so needed when i was young. this is a great head start. stay blessed.
“Slow down young thunder”! 😂😂😂😂 that’s somebody’s rap name out there just watch.

My other personal advice would be:

That freshman 15 is real!
Thanks auntie!
Try to work in your field while in school, ask the teacher of that department if you can be their assistant of help or just learn some additional skills to add to your resume.
How can anyone dislike a video from EJ??? We don't deserve this woman!!!!!
