Honestly, Sonic has been bigger in the West from the beginning. It's never been popular in Japan. Frontiers was the first really popular Sonic game there.
Also, the US played a big role in the development of Sonic 2. The American and Japanese branches of STI worked together on the game.

I would kill for Sonic X to have some sort of revival. It'd would be really be so cool to see Sonic Unleashed adapted ect. Hell, SEGA owns Studio Marza, I am shocked they never tapped into them to make a series or something.

I think it's no question that the west audience and just the general culture of Sonic is what's keeping it alive, but when it comes to everything else is when it gets really muddy. I feel like Japan is probably more consistent with writing Sonic and understanding the cast, but it's arguable for everything else. What I hope is that Sonic continues to grow in Japan so they can successfully appeal to both markets, finding that balance of Sonic that appeals broadly.

One thing I've been saying for the past few years is that SEGA is doing the same thing for Sonic in Japan as they've for the longest time been doing for Puyo Puyo outside of Japan.
They're making a lot of content that is EXTREMELY relevant but exclusive to one region. Sonic hasn't been getting some relevant Sonic content ported to Japan, starting from Sonic Rivals. Aside from the art pieces that SOJ is making, Japan has been getting just localisations of western Sonic social media content.
At the same time, Puyo Puyo has been having A LOT of content exclusive to Japan. Even after the success of the first Puyo Tetris they did a Japan-Exclusive 3DS game Puyo Chronicle in which they introduced new characters and a gameplay style. Then when PPT2 came out, they brought everything from Chronicle back without ever properly introducing them to the western audience, and don't get me started on Puyo Quest.

A Sonic anime made by Ufotable (that did Demon Slayer and Fate) would be FIRE. And having other studios from both US and Japan work on Sonic Games would make the franchise way bigger than ever before. Imagine a Sonic RPG game made by MONOLITH SOFT, that would be amazing.

The difference in the early days of Sonic between Western and Eastern sides of Sonic. And despite Japan being its home turf, you have to admit that the Western influence has been key to Sonic's success. As wild as the American side got with its original stuff in SatAM and Archie, I have to say they will always be a part of Sonic. No matter how much Sega of Japan wants to deny them.

Some changes happened too for Mario but less people complained: Koopa was named Bowser, Peach was named Toadstool (until Super Mario 64 when she became the Princess "Peach Toadstool), Mamu was named Wart and Catherine was named Birdo.

i don't think i've seen anyone mention that sonic was primarily designed to appeal to a western audience, with his shoes being inspired by both michael jackson and santa claus, and his personality inspired by bill clinton. ohshima even went to new york to survey the locals about his designs.
so it doesn't surprise me that sonic is most beloved in the west considering he was MADE for the west. that being said, it is really crazy to me how unpopular sonic was in japan until recently!

It is so odd, especially considering that Sonic is pretty close to a Shonen protag, and his design easily falls in line with what the Japanese would consider cool, it's most apparent when you just take a glance at anything Marza or the Junio CD work

  • @Brianycus

Sonic being a combination of Michale Jackson, Santa, and Mickey Mouse is funny to think about in hindsight too. Just wanted to throw that idea out there.
In terms of games, I defintely feel like Sonic was always built with the Western audience in mind. It's ironic, very ironic, but the same can be said in the inverse as Mega Man was more suited for the Japanese before shipping him to the West and that's because of his Astro Boy influence.

I feel like the criticisms for the Sonic Superstars opening is that Sega just didn’t pay enough budget. Also the way animation/anime feels these days often feels like it compensates less fluidity with more flashy visuals with tons of shades and attempts for more dynamic animation. Stiff animation can still be kinda stuff even if animation is supposed to be dynamic with less weight accounted for animations. The reason why people like Unleashed’s opening and overall any Marza animation is because they know how to really bring fluid movement and weight to their openings. I really dig how Sonic moved in the trailer of Sonic Superstars! He had bounce to him!

My favorite western creation for Sonic are the live action Sonic films. The first one makes cry like a baby every time I watch it too. My favorite Japanese creation for Sonic are the video games with my favorite one being Sonic Generations. Also, I'm very interested in the idea of Atlus making the next Sonic RPG. The game would be so amazing!

Love this video assessment. While it's true the Western fans are the backbone, I would definitely love to see the Japanese side of the community do more.
A Sonic X revival would be cool, and heck, what you said of Insomniac doing a Sonic game, that would be amazing as well, especially considering how great their past few games were like Spider-Man 1 & Miles, Ratchet & Clank rift apart, etc.

Sonic is influental not just in Japan or the US, but all around the world, and even though this is a debate, you cant deny that both sides have their respective pros and cons that make it special. Even other places in the world love Sonic, and even had official publishings (The Fleetway Comics in the UK.) And even Sonic Fangames from the east too (Sonic Omens). Sonic is just one of those characters that has so much influence and notariety that its hard not to notice him. Matter of fact, his influence is so profound that its even generated games that became their own series through inspiration or influence (Freedom Planet, Spark the Electric Jester, Pizza Tower, etc.). Its safe to say that no matter what, through thick and thin, Sonic will stay prelevant for the decades to come.

This video didn't really tell me anything. Based on the title, I thought I would learn something new related to Sonic game development. This was just an editorial about who you want to see make Sonic games in the future. Also, you can just say "cartoons." "Animations" sound odd (even if it's technically accurate).

It’s honestly a complex topic when it comes to Japan and the West and their influence on Sonic and how it should be. It’s safe to say Sonic would not be the continued success it has been without both Japanese and Western involvement and input. And honestly, I’d prefer it stays that way.
I feel like for the main game series it’s beneficial most of the input comes from Japanese developers though, because they’re more in tune with Japanese culture and how it can pertain to Sonic, such as the shonen feel the series has had, for example. And just that general positive and cute energy Japanese culture tends to be great at, it’s also important the Sonic series has that too and not only serious, dark, and cool themes. The balance is key.
So for the main games I generally prefer Japanese development with some Western input especially as it can pertain to marketing in the West. I’m very happy Sonic Frontiers did well in Japan, and it seems Sega has finally started to get the hang of marketing the franchise over there with ideas such as the Korone Vtuber collaboration.
For everything else I have no problem with western development teams, such as spin-offs, cartoons, comics, and movies. But with the caveat that they have developers from Sonic Team giving a little bit of oversight so we don’t get something too crazy or off the rails to where it doesn’t even feel like Sonic any more. For the most part, and with exceptions, Sonic Team has been doing a good job with that. Especially as it pertains to projects such as the Paramount Sonic movies.
For future Japanese Sonic products I would very much enjoy a new Sonic anime, and I think the time is right for it, as anime is more popular in the West now than it was when Sonic X released. This could be a good opportunity to grow the fanbase in Japan and the West too.

Yes they are a western studio, but they already work on Sonic and other Japanese properties (Castlevania the greatest example). They already have connections with Sega and can no doubt turn out a amazing product.

  • @vicaaronnaval1881
    @vicaaronnaval1881 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In my opinion, Sonic and the franchise should have more anime atmosphere. Sonic's characters is so unique. Whether it's his design, the way he talks, his attitude, and his personality. Sonic's character really is like and an anime character. I really believe Sonic can have an amazing anime series. Not like your usual saturday morning cartoon anime like "Sonic X," but be like a 13+ Jujitsu Kaisen level like anime. Staying true to the original games, and no other twists like "Sonic X." Sonic having an anime series has potential. The Sonic movies and Sonic Prime series are good, don't get me wrong. But I really do like and want Sonic's overall character and franchise have a little influence in Japanese, he can still have the western influence too.
What I dream for the next Sonic game, is having an anime opening. Imagine Sonic opening animation made Ufotable (that made Demon Slayer and Fate), or A-1 Pictures (that made Sword art online and EIGHTY-SIX), that would would be PEAK!
What about Sonic's opening music? Imagine for the first time having a female japanese singer that has full japanese lyrics in a Sonic game. Take LiSA or Aimer for example:
    Lisa made songs like:
Crossing Field from Sword Art Online
Gurenge from Demon Slayer season 1
    Aimer made songs like:
Brave Shine from Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
Zankyou Sanka from Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
Spark Again from Fire Force season 2
It's my dream for Sonic having a female japanese singers like LiSA or Aimer with full japanese lyrics for the first time. I believe that would make Sonic even more popular. I'm sure maybe kids would like it too.
But maybe it might not happen, at least not yet. But still, I still think Sonic and the franchise should go more on the anime route. I love Sonic and anime, I want them to form together as one. I believe that would make Sonic shine brighter.

    • @EricsonGamingNite
      @EricsonGamingNite 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Aimer also made a Song for Genshin Impact as well! And Genshin getting an anime series as well from Ufoatable! I would love to see Sonic get the same treatment! I would love to see Shiro Maekawa (Writer of Sonic games from Sonic Adventure 1 - Sonic and The Black Knight era) and Ian Flynn ( Writer of Sonic Frontiers , Archie Comics since 2006 till end, and the now IDW comics) team up and write the story together for the Sonic anime. Heck maybe they could adapt some stories from the comics like the IDW metalvirus saga. And think about a Crush 40 X Lisa Sonic song, That would be my type of anime for Sonic by Ufoatable or some other anime studio. (Also, other than the vocal soundtracks, I think Tomoya Ohtani, Jun Senoue, and Tee Lopes should do the soundtrack like most Sonic Fames.)
I hope this is a dream come true one day! SEGA, Make it happen!
Edit: If there’s dubbing, please for the LOVE OF GOD DO NOT MAKE IT OVER-CRNSORED LIKE SONIC X! That what kinda ruined the story for me! Maybe do a dubbing studio like Funamation or Crunchy Roll to do the English/other language dubbings! Like no swearing and etc is fine but don’t get vercensor scenes that would make no sense in the context that it’s censored like in that one scene in Sonic X, Shadows friend Molly literally sacrificed herself to save her people from the meterex and shows her grave in the JP dub, and in the America English Dub, she flew away like a coward for no Damn reason. Please don’t censor it like that! Like don’t over gore it and don’t over censor. Just keep it to where it makes sense.

sonic's kinda always been this cocky, snarky, confident lil dude in both japan and america, and ofc america at the time embraced that, to combat with mario's happy go lucky nature, and eventually sega of japan took notice and made sonic EDGIER (the adventure games), and over time a huge part of sonics fanbase was (and still is) american/wherever, and it has influenced his games, from the whole "meta era" to mania to IAN FLYNN writing for the idw comics and then frontiers
sonic is VERY intertwined with his community too (as shown by his twitter lol), and theyve not been scaring getting fans "promoted" you could say (obviously with mania lol, you getting invited to the sonic movie 2 premiere, longestsoloever gettin his funk arrangement of city escape on the sonic yt channel, and SO MUCH MORE)
i could go on for so much longer so im gonna cut it short here: this is why i love sonic, sega's not afraid to interact with their fanbase and that's a VERY GOOD thing, and i cant wait to see what happens in the future lol

    - Funnily enough, one Japanese _Sonic_ fan game that I know of is _Mi ni Ikuzo! Hedgehog._ It is one of the oldest _Sonic_ fan games, being developed for the X68000 in 1993! From what I can understand, Japan does not have the same "fair use" provisions as the United States, explaining the lack of Japanese _Sonic_ fan games.
    - I really hope someone can translate/localize _The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog_ into Japanese someday. It is a shame that one of the most well-received _Sonic_ games out there is only available in the United States.
    - Funny how everyone acknowledges the fact that the _Sonic the Hedgehog_ series is popular in the West but was obscure in Japan until _Sonic Frontiers._ (Thank Korone for (possibly?) starting up a renaissance of Japanese _Sonic_ fans.) Us _Freedom Planet_ fans are stuck with our franchise in total obscurity among general audiences! Even though the games are localized in Japanese (well, _2_ is going to be localized by December 2023), good luck finding anyone in Japan or the United States who talks about the series.

Haha Sonic with Insomniac is a popular idea that crossed my mind more than once, Toys for Bob is also another interesting western dev that could pull something solid! As for japanese devs besides the obvious choice with Nintendo, I would LOVE to see Platinum Games go HAM with Sonic, they could pull something insane if they go unrestrained, to me they're still the epitome of cool japanese action! I also LOVE THE FANGAMES aspect of Sonic, is so crazy how the fanbase pour some incredible, passionate projects in all kind of styles that there is something for everyone! Also the last japanese animated intro I think it was the beloved and cool lookin' Sonic Riders one!
But I definitely like the cool factor the japanese side gives to Sonic, and I think that's what makes him truly special all around, man how I love that hedgehog ahahaha, what a cool dude!

The average Japanese Sonic fan also cares WAY more about narrative and storytelling than the average Western Sonic fan. That's why Sonic games(to most people's expectations) actually sold good in the 90s(yes the lore in the manuals intrigued them for classic sonic. Their manuals were more detailed too), 2000s, and recently frontiers. However, in the 2010s, sonic games were selling pretty poorly in Japan, and that's because of the lack of storytelling, or 'shonen' feel during this era.

I actually have to disagree with you on something you stated. You said that the average Japanese Sonic fan also cares way more about narrative and storytelling then the average Western fan. I 100% disagree with that because I as a western Sonic fan 100% care about the storytelling and the narrative I feel like it's one of the most important things in a Sonic game right after the game play/controls I always loved the story in Sonic and I think it always should be considered one of the most important things in Sonic so I kind of find it kind of condescending the way you just assumed that all Japanese fans care about the story and none of the western fans don't kind of a pretentious thought

    • @ElliottWilbur

Also I hate when people say the western writing is bad because it's Western it's not bad because it's Western it's bad because the people who were doing the story during the 2010s were bad writers and has nothing to do with that it's a western team I guarantee you there's been bad writers in the Japanese side as well it doesn't matter where you are from there's a good writers and bad writers everywhere it's just so happens that during 2010's the writers doing the English stories just happen to be bad writers everyone knows they were terrible plus look at Ian Flynn and Sonic Frontiers he's a great writer and Frontiers has a good story and he's from the West so that proves that it is not a Western problem it's just a bad writer problem because everybody knows the reasons the stories were bad where because of pontac and Graff being terrible writers not that they were from the West everybody knows that

@@ElliottWilbur I never said that man. I'm a western sonic fan and I prioritise storytelling in sonic HEAVILY, probably even more than gameplay in same cases(like the storybook games and RPG spinoffs like chronicles). I'm just talking about the average, meaning the common western sonic fan which might care decently about the story, but it's not their priority, or care very little about it.

This is objectively false. The Japanese decline happened during the 2000s, with the dream cast games, because it didn't sell in japan. "StOrYteLliNg" had nothing to do with it.

Why does the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise still have some Japanese culture references if it's more popular in Western? Still the Sonic main canon series are from Japan and was created in Japan in the first place.
Some Sonic the Hedgehog media and Japanese culture/anime style appeal comparion examples
    1. The Sonic anthropomorphic animal characters' Modern designs have a more anime-oriented style, resembles to some classic japanese/anime characters, Chibi-like anime characters/dolls/figures like Meowth from Pokémon, and even some non-anthropomorphic animal Modern Sonic characters like the humans from both the Sonic Adventure game and Sonic X anime, Maria Robotnik in the Shadow Genrations game, Sonic X anime, and the japanese Sonic Channel website artworks, the Chao creatures and human-like characters like Shahra, Merlina the Wizard, Sage, Lah, and females of Cosmo's species' designs have a more anime-oriented style as well.
    2. Most the Sonic anthropomorphic animals' Modern designs' eyes resembles to some classic japanese/anime characters' big eyes with small vertical pupils and irises like for example some 1-3 generation Pokémon, some 1-3 generation Pokémon human characters, some Mega Man characters, some Keroro human characters, some The Racing Brothers: Let’s & Go!! human characters, some Fighting Foodons characters, Pete from the first Harvest Moon gameboy game, the Samurai Pizza Cats from Samurai Pizza Cats, some Ghost Sweeper Mikami human characters, Dragon of the Sun Bal Dragon from Future Card Buddyfight, Hokuto from Beyblade Metal Saga, and Atsuko Kagari from Little Witch Academia.
    3. Amy, Cream and Vanilla's clothes are resembles to some Lolita fashion, some of Amy's clothes resembles to some Chibi-like anime girl dolls like both some Pretty Cure playset dolls' outfits and Ojamajo Doremi bootleg keychains and figurines' outfits, Amy's dress resembles to for example both Roll's original dress and some of Ms. Mari's dresses from one of her concept arts from Mega Man, Chen's dress from Touhou Project, Yorin/Yorang's dress from Hey Yo Yorang, The Powerpuff Girls Z's dresses, and the Ojamajo Doremi bootleg keychains and figurines' nurse outfits, and Cream's dress resembles a simplified version of japanese school girl uniform, to two Sonic Adventure young human girl NPCs' dresses and Molly Hale's dress as 10 year old from Pokémon.
    4. Sonic, Shadow and Silver as hedgehogs has quills as anime spikey hairstyles, Tails has hair antennae/ahoge anime hairstyle and Amy's hair bangs resembles to Pete's hair bangs from Harvest Moon.
    5. Tails is a fox with more than one tail as Kitsune and the Zeti are based off of Oni demon from japanese folklore.
    6. Amy's Piko Piko Hammer weapon is based on the popular japanese children's toy of the same name.
    7. Cream resembles to Kawaiiko japanese/anime characters, Knuckles resembles to some fighting-type Pokémon, Rouge resembles to some sexy japanese/anime demon girls like Morrigan from Darkstalkers, and Sticks the Badger resembles to few japanaese characters Aika from Skies of Arcadia, Cham-Cham from Samurai Shodown and the jungle boy Tommy from Pokémon, and Eggman resembles to two Ghibli anime characters, Motro from Castle in the Sky and Kamajī from Spirited Away.
    8. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise also has two anime adaptation, "Sonic X" which is more adpated to some of the japanese Sonic games and the "Sonic the Hedgehog" OVA movie.
    9. Even Sticks the Bager, a non-Japanese Sonic character has appeared in some japanese Sonic media as well, she appeared both in two japanese Sonic games "Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games" and "Sonic Runners", a japansese one-shot comic/manga "Sonic Comic" and has her own Sonic Channel profile.

    My guy I love your passion but this video is filled with so much incorrect information. I'm not going to list it all but here are some points that really stuck out to me;
1: Sonic 2 (16-Bit) was the first Sonic game made outside Japan (in the USA) where Sonic Team and STI worked together (same for Sonic 3&Knuckles but that was more Sonic Team, still made in the USA)
2: Sonic Spinball was the first (mainly) western only developed Sonic game.
3: The idea that only Boom and Mania were the only 'made outside Japan' is simply wrong. For example Sonic 3D, Sonic R, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic RIvals 1/2 and the Sonic and Sega All stars games were all made outside Japan (and there is way more)
4: Sonic was far more popular in the Mega Drive era than in the Gamecube/PS2 generation in the west but its the inverse in Japan. Sonic was not that popular in the Mega Drive era because the console flopped in Japan while Sonic Adventure is still the best selling Sonic game in Japan (this can be see today in Japan's lack of Classis Sonic nostalgia and merch).
5: Sonic 3D animated intros were not "always handled by Marza" because Blur Studio worked on Shadow and 06, heck the first 3D "intro" for a Sonic game was made in the UK for Sonic 3D
6: Marza worked on the Sonic movies, its on their Sonic wiki page, like come on
Like dude, I don't want to keep going but can you please just do some research next time or do a review of the script before recording? The subject of western Sonic and Japanese Sonic is a very complex subject and watching someone get basic facts wrong is just so frustrating (this is all on the Sonic wiki).

In my opinion, Sonic and the franchise should have more anime atmosphere. Sonic's characters is so unique. Whether it's his design, the way he talks, his attitude, and his personality. Sonic's character really is like and an anime character.
