      @@rmcswords Same thing here about the leather. Got the plasticky kind on a sword only once, and I ripped it off after 5 min lol.
      Cloudhammer is definitely a different class of leather.
      Also, agree about the tsubas. Black cut-out style is always good for a cutting sword.

    Rewatching, for obvious reasons, and I wholeheartedly agree on the fittings. I much prefer well done, plain old iron with cutouts/designs as opposed to one with gaudy inlays, coating or whatever process they use, unless theyre very minimal and done very well,

    • @rmcswords

      Definitely, I don’t mind some fancier looking ones on a nihonto or display sword but for cutting and kata plain old black iron is preferred

    I don't mind the bling if the bling is resilient and doesn't wear or fade.
    The reason I hate silver or gold isn't the look or the status people put on them, it's that silver coating wears down by rubbing it with your hand.
    If I could get the exact same look I'd put a metal trim or a metal paint with the silver look on anything I could.

    I'm years late but the complaints kinda fall down to slwhy did you buy it if you didn't like those features? At that price point you could order a custom made from S5.
    I'm 5'10" and use a 31 inch blade with a 12 inch tsuka. Had to look all over for a blade that fit my preferences when i got it 17 years ago I don't like either of those shorter. Sounds like a perfect katana for me minus the fittings but I often swap those out anyway.
    Does it have any distal taper? you want that on longer blades to get faster cuts and better ballance. No distal taper would be a deal breaker for me.

    Agreed about the fittings. Those weren't really my taste at all. I find it interesting you don't like the longer nagasa at your height. I'm 6' 2" and I find traditional length katana to feel very short to me (Which is strange, because it's the same size as the bokken I'd been using for years). Similarly, 10.5" Tsuka feels a little cramped. Different people like different things though I suppose.

  • @JordanClymer-fh3pf
    @JordanClymer-fh3pf ปีที่แล้ว

    Late to the party, but understated elegant furniture for me. As for the length, I was curious what a katana length for my size should be (6ft), so I did some math based on supposed average samurai height back in the day (5'3"?) compared to the supposed 28" average katana blades. And at 6ft tall, it would be about 32". Granted, those are just numbers from Google, so it's all 'alleged'. In the end, obviously it's all how you feel and how it performs for you. I was just curious if big westerners just all got used to relatively small katanas because that's the size of the originals for much smaller guys. Silly math and fun maybe-facts aside, thanks for sharing this.

    Does the bohi really makes the katana weaker? even with s5 shock steel? I had a chat with one of the guy from the website, but I'm still skeptical since s5 shock steel is pretty dang tough.

    Cool “honest” review, great cutting, but I have questions like, was it a folded, laminated, or mono-forge blade, clay tempered or how was it differentially tempered?, what kind of steel was used, is that real rayskin? As for bling? Everyone’s different, I have a simple practical Hanwie to do most of my cutting and a more blinged out (son) which looks really cool (dragons all over it, cool folded steel hada) that I still cut with, not as often, but is fun to show to friends and family, different swords have different purposes, some are sting, others are bling, but I don’t think anyone wants a “clown sword” except the “my little pony” sword that Mat Jenson built, lol,….great vid!

      Thanks, some of what you asked is in the video description. John can correct me if I’m am wrong but this is a prototype (not sure if this exact build will ever be sold) s5 steel TH made for mat cutting or thicker softer targets, no hard targets like dowels or bamboo. Looks like real samegawa. My reviews for them are more for cutting performance, to give John feed back on what in my opinion should be changed or left as is. Thanks for watching

    How sharp was the blade? The moment I saw the katana I could tell its length would be an issue at least for me, but I'm very interested in the type of steel they use as most sword manufacturers don't use this same type of steel. As for fittings I'm with you not needing the bling for a cutter. Only thing holding me back from buying one is for the price point the over all quality of the sword is lacking from the video reviews I've seen. Most reviews say the blade comes not as sharp as other swords and they had to polish it to make it sharper which makes that a deal breaker for me.

    • @rmcswords
      @rmcswords  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a prototype so not sure if they’ll sell this exact sword but it came sharper than most and I stropped it. Steel is s5

    I was getting ready to say that in general I like the black, low key look for knives and swords, but then I remembered I just bought a crazy machete with a chicken head handle and sea shells and shit sculpted into the sheath, so obviously there are exceptions, but mostly I like simple/basic designs.

    • @rmcswords
      @rmcswords  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right on, for something I’m going to use I prefer simple and a more traditional look, if I had a nihonto or something just for show I don’t mind it to have a bit of eye catching detail on the fittings.
