"The Uber of Haircuts" Rattles The Dragons | Dragon’s Den

  • Tech Entrepreneurs, Adam Symons and Tarik Fatihi are looking for investment for their on-demand hairdressing service ‘HAIRCVT’, but a sheer lack of market research makes the Dragons question, whether or not ‘bigger players’ in the market will be able to gather the data faster than them whilst generating income…
    An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

    Also a concern about retention. Once a service is rendered, the client meets the stylist.. Now the client and the stylist continue a positive relationship outside of the website/app.

      That's a valid concern, but if the app is convenient and their business model doesn't charge either party (instead making money off sponsored search results and the like), why bother leaving it.
      There is a booking platform in my country called Booksy, and it's thriving. That's what I use for seeing up appointments with my barber too, and not just the first one. There's nothing wrong with it, so why should we leave it. But that's definitely something worth keeping in mind when designing such platform.

    • @ShoaibFazeli
      @ShoaibFazeli 5 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Johnny Sins Exactly my fucking point. The barber could just book next appointment during the first haircut. They get their haircut and come back next and pay through cash/card and bye goes this service. They haven’t done their homework properly. Barber will always benefit, but these two are not the next JustEat or HungryHouse.

      @munky342 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@nudisco300 on the point of convenience the people above are right. Is it more convenient to book a return appointment while in the salon/barbers face to mirror, or is it more convenient to go home, log on and then do it.

    • @nudisco300
      @nudisco300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@munky342 To be honest I don't know a single guy that asks the barber to book his next appointment when he's just finished a haircut. Men don't operate like that, Men wait for their hair to start getting long and then think about having it cut. The concept that I have my hair cut and immediately make another appointment is alien to me as a man! On top of having more important things to worry about than my hair immediately after having it cut, its simply not practical to book another future appointment, hair doesn't grow incremental over a few months. One month you could have new hair quite quickly another your hair might grow slower!
      If anything the app would improve cancellation rates.

    • @andreadamato4482
      @andreadamato4482 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      What she saying makes perfect sense. There is no point in giving someone 100,000, for example, when they actually need 5 million. They will spend the $100,000 and still have nothing, because they actually needed to spend millions. So they spend $100,000 and still do not have a functioning business. It's like me saying I want to pay my rent, its $1000, but give me $100. My ass is still gonna be evicted for non-payment, so giving me the $100 just means you're out $100 and my landlord is still fucking evicting me, only now hes got $100 in his pocket and only suing me for $900. So who gained anything there? Freaking no one! That's just an example, but same basic principle. So if she invests, say $100,000, in a business even the entrepreneur says will take millions, they will blow thru her cash and STILL not have a functional business. At that point she either has to throw MORE money at it, or walk away with $100,000 spent on a non-functioning business. Do you get it now?

    1. After one booking the people that do use the site would book private appointments.

    Hairdressers, Salons and barber shops, at least in the US, are a very community driven enterprises, where you have a fairly close, intimate and trusting relationship with the person who cuts your hair and you feel comfortable going to that person because you like the way they cut your hair. I remember I had to get a haircut while visiting my Dad's winter place in Florida and needed a haircut, so I looked for a well rated hairdresser on Google, she wasn't bad but I didn't like what she did. I think it's one of the few industries that will remain resistant to much change and integration into a Gig-economy, tech infused model.

    The fatal flaw in this business idea is it won't lead to repeat revenue. Maybe it's a great way to introduce people to different hairdressers, and they would take a commission of that initial appointment. But after that why would people choose to book through this system? You have your new hair stylist's phone number and you just ring them when you want your hair done - you wouldn't use the app to book a repeat appointment

    They should standardise and update the booking systems of the salons they're working with so they can offer live booking. It’s not an enormous piece of software, just a small database in most cases

  • @philliptemple9841
    @philliptemple9841 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    They have the right idea in that a lot of people want to change hairdresser, but don't have a photo they can bring of what they want to look like. Clicking and saying "like this" is not bad.
    The live booking is a red herring. Even booking.com doesn't have this, property owners are just sent an email that says "deal with this".
    The problem is populating it to the extent that you will get a haircut match within a geographically acceptable distance. With Uber they come to you, and with AirBnb you were going there anyway, but a hard sell to get somebody to travel a long way for a service (unless it's a restaurant with a Michelin star).
    Phillip.

    • @beedebawng2556
      @beedebawng2556 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, that is not entirely correct. I worked a few years for a significant competitor of booking.com (that eventually got bought by a group of investors and is still operational). .
      We had about 4000 or so suppliers across the UK all of whom maintained multiple reservation systems at once. If they took a booking through us, they knew to block it off on booking.com and elsewhere.
      Was it perfect? No. Did double-bookings sometimes happen? Absolutely. However, we (at the time) offered support in the event such a thing happened.
      As long as hair salons are eager to get customers in stylists' chairs there will be room for a service like this one. What these guys need is a good solicitor to study their business model and draft solid supplier and customer terms and conditions that state clearly:
      1. who is responsible for what once a booking has been made
      2. Who is responsible for what in the event of a double booking
      3. What the procedures for customer redress are etc...
      THIS IS A VERY WORKABLE BUSINESS MODEL. At the beginning you'll probably need to commit some of your human resources to doing some on the phone support. However, that support time will give them plenty information with which they can really optimize the product.
      Fact is people want their hair styled nicely and they want to be able to vary their hairstyles with a certain amount of certainty and foreknowledge that the person doing their new style is good enough at it, that it will actually be made to look nice.
      I say, "Keep going boys!"

      @00Kuja00 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @philliptemple9841 5 ปีที่แล้ว
