  • We take a look at the classic Ford Crown Victoria panther platform Police Car and observe it's design and features which help make it the king of Police vehicles for such a long time.
    The key thing about the Crown Vic is that it's such a tough vehicle. The car can just take such a high level of abuse which reduces down time and maximizes service time. The large dimensions of the vehicle help with storage and ergonomics while using it. This style of V8, full frame, RWD drive car is the end of an era as most Police vehicles are unibody, AWD and typically an SUV format.

    Was given a retired rcmp 2008 p71. Now I know what exactly all the silly holes in the dash were for xD
    Love the car to bits. 234 941km with 1 170 hours.
    Random tidbit for the people that have one, if you thwack the fuel shutoff label in the trunk with a mallet it makes a pretty good antitheft device, or at least slow them down a bit if they don't know what they're looking for (and to test it's functionality).
    Nice video and it's great to see this things still around.

    I bought an 2008 CVPI from a neighbour about 8 months ago.
    $3000 with 118,000km and 1285 idle hours. It was a Burnaby cruiser. Must have been a detective car or something, cloth rear seats, no holes in the dash, no holes from rear partition. Great condition really for being a fleet vehicle.
    I've replaced all the brake calipers/rotors/pads with higher performance. Lowered it 2". Replaced the intake manifold/gaskets, plugs/boots, water pump/thermostat, belt/tensioner/pulleys, blend door actuator/blower motor/resistor/switch, main power window switch, wiper motor/wiring harness, tires. Probably a couple other random things I'm forgetting.
    This thing is a beast, super fun to rip on. I put in a ditch at 70kmh in a hard left turn, it hit something with the front right bumper and wheel, hopped out of the ditch with 100 pounds of dirt stuck in the underside (mostly in that cross member lip) and jammed in the tire beads. Passenger tires started leaking because of the dirt in the beads.
    Had the tires/rims cleaned/reseated and the alignment checked. Alignment was exactly the same as my last alignment when I purchased the tires. Incredible amount of strength in that front end rear end.
    My favourite car of all time, I've had about 30 vehicles in my life so far, it knocked the older Volvos' out of first place for me.

    I knew the shift programming was different for police vics but not that they were again subdivided to patrol -type and whatever the other one was you mentioned.
    I understand Ford has the tuning programs for each VIN available on line, at least as it came from factory.
    This is 2 years after your video (assuming that’s when you taped it) and I love that you featured an (ex?) Mountie car still in “dress uniform”. Must be a BC car based on low “rust/km” ratio.
    I wonder if the RC’s stockpiled Vics for later use once the end was in site. Newspaper articles on line mention Toronto and London PD’s. did.
    I have an ex-OPP unmarked grey 2011 Vic I got 3 yrs ago, retired from service 2019. Works great as you say, having just made a second annual drive to Nova Scotia with it last month. Drove direct to Peterborough from Annapolis valley 18 hours continuous, minus stops for fuel etc.

      This was an active car. There's still a few Crown Vics serving my area. In a lot of ways it's still a better police vehicle than the new stuff.
      They're tougher and take more abuse and light hits better than the current Explorer Interceptor in my opinion from what we see come through the shop.

    Love getting to see stuff like this. Have my own Crown Vic down here in Las Vegas Nevada. Was a local patrol car with LVMPD and ive pretty much fully restored it with all the equipment. Cops love it and many ive talked too wish they still had them. Our department still has them but they are mostly just scacecrow cars in parking lots now

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I work on them daily now. In a lot of ways the Crown Vic is better than the new Explorer.
      The Vic is tougher, can take a hit, easier to put parts off and on. The drivetrain is a lot more simple as well and handles better.

      @@vegascvpiaaron6807 Also it being body on frame means the structure doesn't get compromised in a hit as easily. Smack a quartet panel on the new Explorer, it's usually a write off.

    I’m not sure where you heard about the “Highway patrol tune” but I don’t think that is correct. There wasn’t really different tunes for the car, but there was different gearing options. These cars had two rear gear ratios, 3.27 and 3.55s. Standard these cars came with 3.27 gears which were good for highway cruising and 3.55s which had slightly better off the line and low end performance. Great video and it’s nice to see these things still in action. Crown Vics are exceptionally rare to see on service where I live.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's anecdotal. That's coming from my boss who has been building law enforcement vehicles for 12 years. He had this weird one came in and the officer said it was order with a performance tune. It's not far fetched since civilian vehicles are programmed for economy. The sedan Tauruses drive so different from the regular versions, mainly shift points are altered and I'm sure timing and throttle response is altered.
      I've had 2 of my personal vehicles dyno tuned and they drive so much better and different.

    Down here in Florida, it's pretty easy to get retired Crown Victoria police cars. White seems to be the common color with the front bumper ram bar.

    2008+ Police only for Crown Vic was in Canada....ONLY. In the US, Crown Vic LX in various trim levels was sold right up until the end, but in Canada, only the Mercury Marquis version was sold to civilians. Corporate accounts could ALSO buy the Crown Vic LX in the same trim levels as the Mercury in Canada, but not individuals. Strange marketing....for a car that was actually MADE in Canada. I have a 2003 LX for a daily driver....I HAD a 2009 LX but it got broad-sided...by one of those idiots who cut through parking spaces without looking, at high rates of speed. The Crown Vic Sport had buckets and a floor shifter, the police vehicles have column shifts because most police agencies installed consoles in between the seats that ran right up to the dash, for sirens, radios, etc.
