Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor Review // V8 Machine

  • This is a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Retired from its policing days, this particular example now services the Hollywood spotlight. During their trip to California, James and Thomas had the unique chance to test it on some Los Angeles adjacent roads. Its a body on frame V8 with a hood made for sliding. What can go wrong?

They use a huge assortment of cars now. I have seen the Ford Taurus, Ford Explorer, Ford F150, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Silverado and they still have a few Crown Victoria's. The general rule of thumb is: If any one of those cars is black, gray or white drive the speed limit.

I love and miss my Crown Vic. I am a member of the RCMP and look back on the Crown Vic with genuine nostalgia. Yes she wasn't the fastest nor the most nimble but the little things that the boys mentioned in passing is what made this car so special. The seats were wide like couches, not because of a diet of donuts and mountain dew (yuk!) but because of the gear we carry. I've sat in my own personal vehicle with my gear on and my holster impinges on the seat belt and handcuffs, flashlight, etc dig into the seat. That wide seat allowed me to hit the seat belt button and exit very quickly when needed through the wide opening doors. The new Ford Police Interceptor based on the Taurus have very small interiors compared to the Crown Vic. Even the smallest members have difficulty entering and exiting with grace. And having rear wheel drive, even in wintery Canada, was a blessing. Being able to bust a u-turn with the tail swinging out allowed you to stay in the lane, unlike the understeering AWD Taurus that would put you in the shoulder. And the sound of that V8 under acceleration .... boy does that bring back memories! Good job gentlemen!!!!

No such thing as cop motor and transmission, and no cop chip actually. The only difference in drivetrain comes from the driveshaft and the rear end. The p71 and p7b has an aluminum driveshaft and either 3.27 or 3.55 rear gears

      1. Aluminum drive shaft.
      2. Optional 3.27 rear gears (either open, or locking/limited slip), or 3.55 locking/limited slip rear end.
      3. External Oil cooler ran off of the radiator hose, so it runs cooler (only available on police interceptors, not civilian models).
      4. External transmission cooler (connected to the A/C Condensor), separate from the radiator (not available on civilian models).
      5. Has a external power steering cooler (not available on civilian models).
      6. The radiator is for cooling the engine coolant only, so it is a little bigger (only available on police interceptor models)(civilian models are connected to the transmission, and used as a Trans cooler).
      7. Reinforced suspension (made to make it handle better)(only available on lx sport, and police interceptor models).
      8. More aggressive engine, and transmission tuning (only available on police interceptor models).

The Chevy 9C1 Caprice with 350 V8 was the much preferred cop car over the Crown Victoria in the 90’s. It wasn’t until the Caprice left production, and the Ford underwent a 1998 refresh that the Crown Victoria became a really good police car and built the following it has today. Back when the 9C1 Caprice ended, nobody wanted to give those up for a Crown Vic, now they don’t want to give up the Crown Vic!

At that point, they'd sell most of them to the NYC taxi companies, who'd drive them until 400,000 mi. At that point, they were mostly sent to Boston taxi companies, who'd drive them until 1.2 million miles. Incredible.

I love my 2007 Ford Crown Victoria P71! Today it is in outstanding shape. Even though it has 185,504 miles and 6,136 idle hours. Over the last five years I've owned it, I have rebuilt the transmission at a premium Speed Shop for $3.8K. Water pump, alternator, starter, rear axels, and rear wheel bearings, all with lifetime warranties. Intake manifold, injectors & coils.
This car sat in a body shop for a very long time. The front and back doors on the passenger side do not match the vin#. No frame rust, but my next project is to replace both front quarter fenders and a new paint job (it is white, so it will stay white.
Right after I had a new set of "W"(168mph) rated tires installed. I took her out for a run. Yes, the P71 isn't the fastest thing off the line, but at 155mph she makes you feel like you're only doing 40mph. She just sets down on the road and goes,
All around my neighborhood people have these new cars and SUVs, yet I know, for a fact, that I could chase each and every last one of them right down into the junkyard and still drive away. Not even these newer cop SUVs/Trucks would stand a chance in a durability test.
It is truly the beast of beasts.

Now that you've exposed the rather limp truth about the car, allow me to expand from a regular user. The reason this generation of cruiser was so well loved was because they were tough. When brand new, they offered round about 240hp at the crank, but after doing 330,000 miles worth of patrol circuits, alley abuse and revving them to the moon to get them to go, you'd be _lucky_ if your regular ride had all of 190, and that was with approaching 4800 pounds of kit to roll around with. But, they could do it all day, get a simple maintenance repair every few months and be back in service.
When our department started switching to the then new Dodge Chargers, those first gens were absolute piles. We had one that broke the pitman arms with a whopping 33 miles on the odometer. _That_ was an interesting day, rolling up on a brand new car and the front wheels looked like they had 50* of toe-in EACH.

The Crown Vic is such a bullet proof car as of July 22 . Las Vegas P.D. has a few still patrolling the streets.. It also crazy to think that the last few they have are at a minimum 11 years old. The average time metro keeps most patrol cars is usually 3-4 years. The Crown Vic is/was the last "body on frame" passenger car made(along with the T.C & Grand Marquis) and makes the car perfect for the daily grind of being a cop car.
