  • Eli Prinsen (The Sacrificed, Dream Patrol, Sacred Warrior), the founder of Hybrid Vocal Technique (HVT) gives a free vocal lesson on vowel modification when singing in the belt voice. The vocal range required for this example tops out at C5.
In this mini free voice lesson, Eli demonstrated in the full belt/chest register, the chorus of "Drown In You" as performed by Chris Daughtry.
Here is the link to the actual song:

As a gigging singer myself, I only wish those watching will appreciate this awesome video tutorial. Years ago before TH-cam came along, this would easily be a $100 voice lesson or more.

For all those who (for some dark reason) are not convinced yet: I've been doing lessons with Eli (plus the program) for over two years now, and this stuff has been revolutionary for me. I wish someone told me about this technique fifteen years earlier, when I was ambitious to hit it as a singer-songwriter, but vocally very weak. Now, this happy guy in the above video gave me a chance to live an old dream!

Holy shit this makes so much sense. I feel like this is the perfect solution for the level I am at ❤ I thank all my TH-cam singing geniuses. I fucking love singing.

I bought your program Eli about 2 years ago and I have never sang better than I do now. I used to struggle getting to a c5. Now Im reaching notes easier and more powerful than ever. But your program is more than just hitting notes its really focused on being the best singer you can be. Thanks Eli

The best video lesson so far... I feel kind of bad I purchased HVT on Black Friday sale, I feel like a thief! I went from wannabe singing guitarist to main gigging singer in 3 months. This particular thing of changing the face and how you say the actual words (consonants as well!!) is really where it’s all at.... lots of folks get stuck in exercises only I can imagine. This practical thing shown here can be applied and felt in the gig instantly. For me it’s touch and go on gigs, wish I could practice more before gigs, but folks really need to experience how it feels to do it “wrong” and “right” .... in fact knowing I intend to splat a vowel or whatever intentionally before it happens and gear up for it is essential to feeling in control of the performance. Great stuff man!!

I notice the original guy singing doesn’t have his chords zipped up nice and clean like your version. It’s real scratchy or distorted, which I find way easier lol. The harder word modification was “in”, which you are really good at. Generally “uh, oh and eh” seem easy up high but the ee ih oo modifications are super challenging to pull off as well as you demo in HVT.

Thanks man! Defe good tips here. My vocal coach is constantly saying make it vertical and keep it forward. I like the Joker reference, good visual! Thank you...Rokkitt

Drown sounds nice if you just sang "driiiine" long I sound. And a bit of long OH in the you works but too much makes it yo and that just sounds too different from you for my ears. but I never really knew about vowel mods until maybe 2 years ago. I just never listened closely enough to singers (i was always listening to the guitar parts). maybe the you could be yuuuhew. uh sound at first then turn it at the very end coming down into the ooo like in ballOOn. Interesting stuff if you want to sing better. hehehe Well..... I'm no Eli Prinsen! But... let's see.... no, not gonna do an Eli Prinsen cover!!!!! heh
