    Hey Jeff,
    Just wanted to say that your videos are fantastic. Exercises, great explanations, and none of those "ONE SECRET TIP TO SING LIKE MARIAH CAREY" clickbait videos that teach nothing.
    Thank you.

    Hello Jeff, I have a question for you. About how much do my teeth have to be apart for each vowel? From my understanding A and O are about 2 fingers apart (sideways) E is about 1 1/2 and I and U are about 1 finger apart. Can you please clarify?

    Hi Jeff :) Here I am checking this video out again! I was wondering if you still do live events on Saturdays?

      I haven't done them in a little while. I stopped in order to focus on creating an online upper register singing course. I think about doing them again but haven't decided on a format that I think would be helpful. Additionally, with the changes to the platform that TH-cam has been making I was having massive technical difficulties with my encoder.
      Having said all that, I miss the immediacy of the interactions and think about starting them up again. Just haven't made the commitment.
      Thanks for your interest!
      Jeff

      Hi Jeff, thanks for your reply :)
      I would be interested in any live events you do in the future-you are a very good teacher! Do you have a mailing list so I can keep up with what you're doing? Also interested in your upper register course (every singer's problem lol) . Thanks, Jen

    Great explaination: narrowing vowel and lesser amount of air blending

    Great tips as always! I am a classical soprano, and love exploring and experimenting with my voice through vocal exercises and songs. Do you think you could talk more about the 3rd passaggio you mentioned in your live chat last week (maybe in a future event)? I feel like it's around B 5, C 6 in my range. Overall, I'm just really curious about my voice type! Thanks so much for your awesome videos!

      Yes! I'd be happy to talk more about it! Definitely at Live Event 14. Here's the link:

      Hope to see you then!

    Dude, this is great. It's nice to see new recent videos on singing. Most stuff on youtube is old (not that it's bad, just that it's refreshing!)

    Thank you for this-I have been looking for info on vowel modification and this was very helpful, especially the chart. Can you clarify the following though? I thought vowels should narrow as we ascend through the bridge rather than widen?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! Different schools of voice teach things differently, often using the same words to mean different things or confusingly different words to refer to the same process with the voice.
      In the context of the zona di passaggio, and specifically transitioning from thyro-arytenoid dominant singing to crico-thyroid dominant singing the word 'narrow' is often used in reference to ones technique thorough this range of voice. Meaning that a singer's vowel formation and airflow must be fairly precise in order to be successful. In this context I agree with the usage of that word. If we are specifically speaking of the actual formation of the vowel sounds, I do not, but without knowing the context of what you have heard in the past I can't really say.
      It also depends on the disposition of the vocalist. If you have a singer who typically goes too wide on their vowels through the zona di passaggio (fairly common) then the instruction will be to narrow. If you have a singer who is typically too narrow (fairly typical with those who have strained in the past to sing higher notes) then some widening will need to occur in order to make a successful transition.
      Best,
      Jeff

    Great video, I will definitely try to practice as you say and see if I can make it through my second break without strain and also, extend my TA action more close to a C5/Db5 zone since I find I flip too early probably due to either excess tension or weakness in that area.

    I don't get it. Is that cheating ? Why we cannot sing them correctly ?
    Blending and widen, why ? Is that secret to sing better on high notes ?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting questions. Is this a secret? Not in any way. Every major credible vocal technique discusses vowel modification to some degree. Those that claim there is no need will indicate that a neutral larynx in the zona di passaggio will slightly widen the vowels and is a necessity to singing effectively in that range.
      As for what is 'correct' there is a very slim area where we can claim objective correctness. Even that will vary from technique to technique. In my singing method, I am working to enable vocalists to sing as effectively as possible for as long as possible. By 'effectively' I intend to show how to sing in tune in as wide a range as the vocalist cares to explore with a flexible approach to timbre. By 'as long as possible' I am talking about a healthy, sustainable approach to their voices that can be maintained indefinitely.
      Goals differ though, and perhaps only part of my value proposition is appropriate to your needs. Find out if it works for you. Try it and discard it if you find that it is unnecessary. I would encourage you to read Richard Miller's books and have a look at vowel modification as it is addressed in other methods. See what they have to say. Results will differ!
      Thanks for the philosophical question.
      Jeff

      Thanks, Jeff I just read Rudolf Steiner and it is all about philosophy stuff there.
      And second book is(this is long name in Germany) Die Schule der Stimmenthüllung. Ein Weg zur Katharsis in der Kunst des singens by Valborg Werbeck-Svärdström.
      It is weird book like you have two mirroring points for singing: solar plexus and top of the head ?
      It is more about spirit than mechanical things of singing.
      And hard to understand how all your body makes the notes even skin ?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! I like the sound of that! Two mirroring points at the solar plexus and top of the head!
      Singing is a full body sport, that's how I'd interpret that text. I love the spiritual side of singing; how when appoggio is working one's entire body is in active participation of tone production. A pervasive, dynamic engagement throughout.
      Thanks for getting in touch!
