Finally man, this was the trick. Despite exercises I just couldn’t seem to sing at the bridge of my voice. No matter the blending tricks and exercises I used, it kept flipping or ending up super weak. Realized I was always copying the singers vowels; played with my own at my sticking point, and boom. Nice and clear C4 with no trouble. Thanks so much man, this is the most inspired, instead of desperate, I’ve felt for a long time to actually sing on pitch with a full voice
This has been working for me. I still need to figure it all out, but one discovery I made is replacing the "ee" on A4 with an "ih" in the chorus of "Free Falling" helps a ton and makes it more stable.

Holy moly. I'm at a point where i'm starting to get a grasp and understand my own singing and voice. I have a really solid base already. I can sing clean, raspy, fry scream, false chord, kargyraa, khoomei, some classical etc. Somehow my body "feels" what must be done to achieve the sound I hear, but the problem for me comes, when I can't explain the things I do and why. So the feel makes no sense to me unless I learn the thorough explanation and connect that knowledge to what I'm doing. Your way of communicating the topics I've tried to find out about for a long time now gives me the "a ha!!" moments, that no one else (countless youtubers) can give. Yes! Its making my head spin, but I am slowly getting it. Its going to take practice. I realize now my biggest problem was the vowel issue. Not with just hoe it sounds but confidence in general as well. Since I have adjusted, it has 4:09 improved my singing drastically. But, I do struggle with consistency. Its going to take some time. You’re on fire this week. I always love to watch your videos. I had 2 teachers who told me that I should either lower the key or stick to singing Frank Sinatra. One told me “I don’t understand why people want to sing outside of their “natural” range. That’s the last time I saw her. Nobody tells me what I can and can’t do. Yes it’s hard. Yes sometime I want to quit and forget I tried to do all this. But the next day I continue and I know I will be able to do what I want. Maybe it will take 5 years and not 5 weeks like I’d like to but… I still have plenty of years to live. As for that guys comment… if at some point I can sing 70% as good as Kegan I’d be very happy with the level I’d achieve. BTW: I don’t have any accent.

It's great that you're doing the higher part of Like A Stone as an example! Been using it for high-range practice, but like to attack the G-A range with belting and try to transition to the mix when going higher. Your distorsion sure works great for adding drive to the mix and covering up any transitions up there!
Kindof depends on your voice whether that works. Cornell is kindof on the cusp on the album version which is a tone down from here. In the classic soundgarden days, he'd just blast past this range in a thinner sound and wail D5's, E5's without fail using the same approach as me here. Audioslave? not so much. Best - K
@FoundationVocalStudio thanks, I'm a bass (resonant C2) and it took some time and instruction around support etc. to find a comfortable G4 belt (practicing the Like A Stone acoustic key!). Chris never seems to do the highest Like A Stone extensions from the album when he played live, like on Patiently in the final chorus, so wondering if he just felt the C sounded thin or why he avoided it. I hope to use your mix techniques to be able to reach Call Me A Dog, Say Hello 2 Heaven some day! So cheers!
I've got an easy B1, C3 as well - probably the C is what I'd be most confident doing in the lower range, so, your voice probably does something similar to mine. Your second break is lower than the top notes in Like a Stone, so you've got to narrow it down to sing what I'm singing here. I think Cornell's technique just went to shit in Audioslave, and lost confidence in his high range. K
@@FoundationVocalStudio Sadly, I think you’re right about Chris Cornell. I think that can actually be a problem for quite a few singers who do not really understand what they’re doing. Talent in comparison to hard work can sometimes be a curse too. But what do I know, I only listen to Badmotorfinger all the time. 🤦🏻♂️😅
@FoundationVocalStudio his voice definitely got airier and possible damaged, even though I prefer the tone from the Audioslave records to early squeels. For someone who isn't confident in their high notes, Chris sure seem to have booked a ton of bare acoustic gigs with him and guitar on Call Me A Dog or the piano on When I'm Down so I doubt he'd skip a few Cs in Like A Stone for technique reasons (also no reason to sing it 2 steps higher if that caused problems)

I'm singing "IH" like a longform version of "sin" instead of "seeeen" - my buddy Danny Formica always reminds me it should be an "easy EE", so, try not to pronounce the sound, just put your tongue naturally behind the bottom teeth, raise the middle a bit in the mouth and let it right. Good valuable info here, folks. Don't get distracted by irrelevant issues like "pitchiness" that's not what he is teaching. Pay attention to the way he lets his voice open up to the natural vowel rather than forcing the original singer's choice. Every vocal instrument works differently. If you want to go to the same places other singers go, you might need to adjust your voice differently to get there. If you can't grasp what he's saying, you may not be ready for this lesson yet. Can you make a content about how to sing Making love out of nothing at all by air supply. I really can’t hit those high notes in the chorus and I wanna know what kind of register or technique has used. Thankyou
I'm able to mix without doing any vowel modifications. Am I doing it without thinking? Mixing feels more like fine coordination that comes when the setup is functional, while vowels can affect the sound quality, from my experience, it hasn't been necessary to use particular vowels to sing in mixed voice, more so the placement of the vowels affects how I adjust the subglottic pressure/some laryngeal narrowing to remain in the same dynamics. Any singer can go from falsetto to any gradient of mix to full voice on any pitch. Chris Cornel (Like a Stone chorus), in particular, pulls his tongue back + uses twang and subtle false folds distortion for effect, yet the underlying setup for his voice is the same, he's properly using his dynamics higher in his range regardless of how he colors the sound with vowels. This shows vowels can be controlled independently of dynamics, and from experience, that's how it feels.
This depends on your understanding of vowel modification. It's simply catering to the changing frequencies of your pitch, and how that crosses over into your vowel/the word you're singing. Ergo, you technically ARE modifying your vowel, however, it's natural for you in a way that might not be natural for another singer. Twang comes from the AES, not the tongue - out of interest. The tongue is largely up, and often slightly forward (at least, in his prime - which Audioslave is not). best - K
@@FoundationVocalStudio Ah, yes I'm aware of twang coming from the aryepiglottic sphincter, I was simply pointing out his style of singing during the chorus, which when mimicking it directly, the tongue is further back. The way I define vowel modification is simple, the vowel in the mouth, soft pallet, or tongue changes. The only thing I'm claiming is that this and the dynamics (regardless of pitch) can be done on any vowel (closed vowels requiring less support than open ones). So it confuses me to think of the vowels before the dynamics as, I've never thought about it
@@xxXxWh1teW0lfxXxx Well no, it depends on the vowel. "patiently" as an example is a front vowel - the tongue is higher and forward, making the second formant smaller/catches a higher frequency.

The vowels do affect the higher formats of the voice (I just observed the difference on a spectrograph, brighter vowels resonate with higher formants than darker ones), but, they must be independent from the amount of vocal fold contact, right? Isn't that the direct cause of dynamics? And wouldn't that be separate from the amount of "metal" or higher formats? Aren't vowels only changing the perceptual nature of the sound rather than the actual "weight"?
Again, depends on the vowel - there's really no such thing as a 'brighter' vowel, that's perceptual. Every vowel has a dark and bright formant - ie: AY is something like 500hz in the back, and 1.5+k in the front (what you're calling a brighter vowel I assume), where AH is 1.5k in the back and 800 in the front. They're almost the same sound, but, the frequencies are 'caught' back to front in the formants. F1 is your structure, F2 is your clarity/pronunciation. Change F1 as you ascend instead of pronouncing a different sound, and I believe you'll get the answer you're really looking for.
my singing teacher told me to compress harder to hit these notes and stop cracking. it does work if i compress really hard. but its so much pressure. You seem like your doing it really easy. It is better than pushing up from chest voice. im hitting the notes but its so much work and strain and my tone is not good. What would you suggest?
"strain and tone is not good" - so, this obviously isn't right. I can also push the crap out of things, but, it's not sustainable, and yes, strains and sounds like crap. Exhale slightly, sing into the back of the head and shift away from pronunciation. Best - K
Everyone hears pitch correction in recordings nowadays. You are singing without pitch correction and no effects on these videos. If I could sing like you I would be the happiest guy alive!
I started off with country, Johnny Cash was more in my wheel house. But I used to sing along with Metallica, Wasp and Iron Maiden. Started to sing along with Soundgarden. Idk what sort of range that is but I can do it and then screw anything up in an instant. Some days I can and other days... So yeah the low stuff is always so much easier to do. Fogarty has an East coast accent as far as Americans go. Big wheels keep on toynin as opposed to turning. I wouldn't mind hearing some Johnny Cash in a Aussie accent:) Might be interesting.
It can be challenging to deal with some of these comments on TH-cam for sure. Everyone has their opinion, but the fact that you can hit all these crazy notes, especially considering how low your speaking range is, I would say you know a thing or two about how the voice works LOL! I know people who do not like Robert Plant or Chris Cornell's singing, but yet, they are considered to be a gold standard by so many people. So, I think your friendly commenter needs to realize that his taste may be a bit different than others :) Rock on!
I did notice that last comment you referred to there Kegan, which I was going to respond to but thought twice about it as it didn't sound like a constructive comment but more like a disgruntled comment. Anyway, anyone who sings knows how difficult it is to sing unaccompanied. Obviously you've got no problem with pitch.
I have the higher range but I still have figure it out how to sing more freely there. And I find it that it depends on the song. Sometimes it's easier and sometimes it's harder. And I can make a conclusion. I'm not a native native speaker and I like learning languages in general. Also I learn about accents thoroughly. Like now I'm learning Chinese and the phonetic system is totally different to my native language. So I generally make out phonemes pretty good and the singer who uses vowels closer to my range it just works
Using your advice I find I can often get a much EASIER time hitting mix voice notes around G4-C5, the issue I find is they still don't sound GOOD. Defo think it'd improve if I could get some grit in there, are you going to cover that aspect at all? (or have I missed it)

I think your pitch is spot on, I've been learning allot recently from your videos and I've been changing my vowels like you suggested, my biggest thing ATM is, and forgive me I'll try to make this make sense. When I sing in head voice I'm focusing on my vocal chords being TIGHT , the only way to explain it is that I'm tightening my folds, the harder I tighten the higher I sing, the harder I tighten the more clean the sound. Does this make sense? Is this how I'm supposed to be singing high notes? I should also share while doing this I can only sing so high and I hit another ceiling, the reason I share this is because I'm figuring out the right placements and modification and support and all these things but the tightening of my vocal folds for higher head voice notes is something I'm unsure of I'm doing correct. Yep, makes sense. "tension" is really what happens when you're using the CT muscle - it shouldn't be uncomfortable or strained, but yes, it's a tighter feeling in some singers. The key in the hyper upper range is to use support/exhale to get you there instead of reaching. Best - K
@FoundationVocalStudio yes this makes sense, my CT muscle doesn't feel strained but I have been focusing on keeping it tight when I need to, I will keep working on moving the sound up and out instead of from my vocal chord area. Your vowel and pitch are ultimately derived from the same frequency/vibration - so, when you change one you must cater to the other. So, as you ascend, you can't just ask for the same sound as it won't exist at that pitch, so, you slightly alter how the frequencies within the vowel are received (vowel modification) and you'll find you can actually sing higher with an almost identical sound without pushing/straining/breaking. This is not often spoken about but I'm of the belief that if you can sing quietly with the same resonance and clarity it makes singing loudly a breeze. Is it possible to still sing these higher notes (A5 up) without using a ton of air support?
@@davidbgaskin "without using a ton of air support" is the kicker here - your concept of support is askew. I often explain support as a controlled exhale. Ergo, perhaps you're pushing rather than supporting, hence your question? A4 or A5? A4 yes, but A5 is a different story - that's really the top of my range now, and it's not really something that you could do 'quietly' in a full voice, it requires stretch and pressure. Best - K
I like to sing Epitaph by King Crimson. But I struggle to hit the note at the end of the second verse on the word "fools". It is a little easier if I go right to singing that line rather than after the whole verse. I think it's a combination of bad breathing technique and I need to put some thought into the vowel. The note also sits right under my upper passaggio. Thanks for this video. Anyone who tells you that you can't ever sing a certain way doesn't understand rock n roll.
Is there any way to add notes to my lower register? My last decent low note is a B4, but I can wobble my way down to an Eb2. I want to get lower and more powerful.
If you can wobble down to the E, it's likely you can improve that range. I wouldn't say you can "add", but you can definitely improve what's there. Go BRIGHT in your lower range, play with the support/pressure/air balance and remember - your vowels still come into play in your lower range. For context, I started out with a solid E2 - with better technique it's a solid B1 now. I can get lower than that, but, not something I'd really call part of my useable range. Best - K

Hi Kegan, I am a bit confused. You say that we need to narrow the vowels as we go up but other people say that we need to open them up. Do you all mean the same thing but describe it from a different angle? I guess we need to make vowel alignment so they all have a similar shape and therefore it means that we need to open up the narrow vowels and narrow down the wide vowels
Depends on where and what they're talking about. First break? Sure, widen it and shift into the palate - but, if they're not narrowing, it's likely they're not singing in a relative high register for their voice like I'm doing here. So, widen, then narrow it down, then, widen again is the general premise you'll find people are actually following. best - K

Hey Keegan I have a question. I took lessons with an opera teacher and they told me there are 5 vowels you should practice and sing the lyrics on. "Ah eh ee oh oo." Is this applicable to rock singing? I'm trying to trust the process. Would like to hear your thoughts. I know you sometimes talk about there being only really 2 vowels in singing that everything is based around.
Depends on context - I also took classical lessons for quite a few years. In classical, you're going to stick within your defined character fach, meaning, my range is capped at about F4, maybe G. So, that's fine with a vowel like OO or OH - but, if you want to sing say "I remember you" by Skid Row, these vowels aren't going to cut it (try it, and the higher I remember YOU" lines will break apart) - so, instead we're going for OE instead of OO (so, raise the tongue, get the ping in the front and modify the same as a front vowel, and secondly replace OH sounds like 'hope' in the same way, and replace OH sounds like 'god' as AH. This directly refererences to how Paul Rodgers, Sebastian Bach, Chris Cornell in their prime all sang their vowels with an incredible and effortless range - compare that to Eddie Vedder who sings OH and OO all over the place. Have a look at local rehearsal spaces - they usually do a discount if it's a 'solo' rehearsal, or, there might even be a small teaching space you could hire regularly for practice. This is what I used to do when I lived in the city and couldn't really practice or teach from home. Best - K
I personally practice inside a wardrobe with a lot of clothes hanging inside to avoid reverb and I put outside in front of it a Bluetooth speaker reproducing white noise as loud as it can 😂😂

Hey Rez! It's something I'm deliberately ignoring - I'd rather not put any energy into it. I feel the same, but I feel there's going to be a push in the other direction. AI isn't going to get up on stage and have a presence like Paul Rodgers or Layne Staley in our lifetime - even if people can fake a Metallica record online with it. I don't know the correct terminology for this but I can sing "wide" "open" vowels with ease, for ex- the high note in Man In The Box, or "Nightsssss" in Don't stop believing or "Mamaaaa" in bohemian rhapsody or any other constant high note like that. I struggle with fucking "small" or "closed" vowels. like "uuuu/oooo" as in bohemian rhapsody , "if im not back again" in bohemian rhapsody or singing the word "and" etc etc. I can't fucking figure it out😭

Honestly I don't really know how what you mean I'm not criticizing, you most likely helped many many people But you don't seem to be talking about registration much I do the vowels and I still have to hold my air back You said we exhale, but if I let go I end up in head voice with more cord closure and pharyngeal resonance. And I cannot at all compress even more to create that chesty tone Even with the vowels you mentioned it still sounds false. Or if I try to do it in thinner chest it sounds weak. You never explain how we physically get that CT stretch in the full voice.

Your expectation on how things become 'full' such as in my case are askew - you're not getting an immediately full sound from my instruction, so, you're just going back to holding. "I cannot compress to create that chesty tone"

About the active exhale and keeping the closure I'm saying I just literally have no conception of how to do that, either it goes breathy or it's back to just squeezing, OR it's just head voice that "tries to immitate" chest and absolutely nobody really explains what gets someone there. I don't mean to offend though, it's just that these issues are not talked about much I will check the video where you talk about it though
So, my suspicion is that you're not actually singing the vowel correctly - even if you think your 'pronouncing' the vowel in the same way you think I'm doing. There's actually a shift internally within the same vowel that allows you to sing higher - this then makes all of this possible. I'll do a video about your questions when I get a moment. Best- K
I don’t know if I read your comment well but my suspect is that you are not using the right muscles to get there and using high larynx chest instead. Held back air on mixed voice feels bad and sounds awful and artificial if you are clean singing. mixed voice just feels easy and makes you feel like you are in great control of your own voice even tho you are freeing out it.
Imagine watching your vids and seeing how effortless it appears for you now after how many years then trying to say it's outta your range and it's off pitch... People always pretending to be experts and put others down when they actually know nothing lol
Maybe Danmanley2525 didn't like your tone, but referred to it as pitch not knowing the difference?? Depending if you're watching YT video's on a phone, laptop, or desktop with proper speakers could make all the difference in sound quality.

Finally man, this was the trick. Despite exercises I just couldn’t seem to sing at the bridge of my voice. No matter the blending tricks and exercises I used, it kept flipping or ending up super weak. Realized I was always copying the singers vowels; played with my own at my sticking point, and boom. Nice and clear C4 with no trouble. Thanks so much man, this is the most inspired, instead of desperate, I’ve felt for a long time to actually sing on pitch with a full voice
This has been working for me. I still need to figure it all out, but one discovery I made is replacing the "ee" on A4 with an "ih" in the chorus of "Free Falling" helps a ton and makes it more stable.

Holy moly. I'm at a point where i'm starting to get a grasp and understand my own singing and voice. I have a really solid base already. I can sing clean, raspy, fry scream, false chord, kargyraa, khoomei, some classical etc. Somehow my body "feels" what must be done to achieve the sound I hear, but the problem for me comes, when I can't explain the things I do and why. So the feel makes no sense to me unless I learn the thorough explanation and connect that knowledge to what I'm doing. Your way of communicating the topics I've tried to find out about for a long time now gives me the "a ha!!" moments, that no one else (countless youtubers) can give. Yes! Its making my head spin, but I am slowly getting it. Its going to take practice. I realize now my biggest problem was the vowel issue. Not with just hoe it sounds but confidence in general as well. Since I have adjusted, it has 4:09 improved my singing drastically. But, I do struggle with consistency. Its going to take some time. I always love to watch your videos.
I had 2 teachers who told me that I should either lower the key or stick to singing Frank Sinatra.
One told me “I don’t understand why people want to sing outside of their “natural” range. That’s the last time I saw her.
Nobody tells me what I can and can’t do. Yes it’s hard. Yes sometime I want to quit and forget I tried to do all this. But the next day I continue and I know I will be able to do what I want. Maybe it will take 5 years and not 5 weeks like I’d like to but… I still have plenty of years to live.
As for that guys comment… if at some point I can sing 70% as good as Kegan I’d be very happy with the level I’d achieve.
BTW: I don’t have any accent.

It's great that you're doing the higher part of Like A Stone as an example! Been using it for high-range practice, but like to attack the G-A range with belting and try to transition to the mix when going higher. Your distorsion sure works great for adding drive to the mix and covering up any transitions up there!
Kindof depends on your voice whether that works. Cornell is kindof on the cusp on the album version which is a tone down from here. In the classic soundgarden days, he'd just blast past this range in a thinner sound and wail D5's, E5's without fail using the same approach as me here. Audioslave? not so much. Best - K
@FoundationVocalStudio thanks, I'm a bass (resonant C2) and it took some time and instruction around support etc. to find a comfortable G4 belt (practicing the Like A Stone acoustic key!).
Chris never seems to do the highest Like A Stone extensions from the album when he played live, like on Patiently in the final chorus, so wondering if he just felt the C sounded thin or why he avoided it.

I've got an easy B1, C3 as well - probably the C is what I'd be most confident doing in the lower range, so, your voice probably does something similar to mine. Your second break is lower than the top notes in Like a Stone, so you've got to narrow it down to sing what I'm singing here. I think Cornell's technique just went to shit in Audioslave, and lost confidence in his high range. K
@@FoundationVocalStudio Sadly, I think you’re right about Chris Cornell. I think that can actually be a problem for quite a few singers who do not really understand what they’re doing. Talent in comparison to hard work can sometimes be a curse too. But what do I know, I only listen to Badmotorfinger all the time. 🤦🏻♂️😅
@FoundationVocalStudio his voice definitely got airier and possible damaged, even though I prefer the tone from the Audioslave records to early squeels. For someone who isn't confident in their high notes, Chris sure seem to have booked a ton of bare acoustic gigs with him and guitar on Call Me A Dog or the piano on When I'm Down so I doubt he'd skip a few Cs in Like A Stone for technique reasons (also no reason to sing it 2 steps higher if that caused problems)

I'm singing "IH" like a longform version of "sin" instead of "seeeen" - my buddy Danny Formica always reminds me it should be an "easy EE", so, try not to pronounce the sound, just put your tongue naturally behind the bottom teeth, raise the middle a bit in the mouth and let it right. Good valuable info here, folks. Don't get distracted by irrelevant issues like "pitchiness" that's not what he is teaching. Pay attention to the way he lets his voice open up to the natural vowel rather than forcing the original singer's choice. Every vocal instrument works differently. If you want to go to the same places other singers go, you might need to adjust your voice differently to get there. If you can't grasp what he's saying, you may not be ready for this lesson yet.

I'm able to mix without doing any vowel modifications. Am I doing it without thinking?
Mixing feels more like fine coordination that comes when the setup is functional, while vowels can affect the sound quality, from my experience, it hasn't been necessary to use particular vowels to sing in mixed voice, more so the placement of the vowels affects how I adjust the subglottic pressure/some laryngeal narrowing to remain in the same dynamics. Any singer can go from falsetto to any gradient of mix to full voice on any pitch. Chris Cornel (Like a Stone chorus), in particular, pulls his tongue back + uses twang and subtle false folds distortion for effect, yet the underlying setup for his voice is the same, he's properly using his dynamics higher in his range regardless of how he colors the sound with vowels. This shows vowels can be controlled independently of dynamics, and from experience, that's how it feels.
This depends on your understanding of vowel modification. It's simply catering to the changing frequencies of your pitch, and how that crosses over into your vowel/the word you're singing. Ergo, you technically ARE modifying your vowel, however, it's natural for you in a way that might not be natural for another singer. Twang comes from the AES, not the tongue - out of interest. The tongue is largely up, and often slightly forward (at least, in his prime - which Audioslave is not). best - K
@@FoundationVocalStudio Ah, yes I'm aware of twang coming from the aryepiglottic sphincter, I was simply pointing out his style of singing during the chorus, which when mimicking it directly, the tongue is further back.
The way I define vowel modification is simple, the vowel in the mouth, soft pallet, or tongue changes. The only thing I'm claiming is that this and the dynamics (regardless of pitch) can be done on any vowel (closed vowels requiring less support than open ones). So it confuses me to think of the vowels before the dynamics as, I've never thought about it
@@xxXxWh1teW0lfxXxx Well no, it depends on the vowel. "patiently" as an example is a front vowel - the tongue is higher and forward, making the second formant smaller/catches a higher frequency.

The vowels do affect the higher formats of the voice (I just observed the difference on a spectrograph, brighter vowels resonate with higher formants than darker ones), but, they must be independent from the amount of vocal fold contact, right? Isn't that the direct cause of dynamics? And wouldn't that be separate from the amount of "metal" or higher formats? Aren't vowels only changing the perceptual nature of the sound rather than the actual "weight"?
Again, depends on the vowel - there's really no such thing as a 'brighter' vowel, that's perceptual. Every vowel has a dark and bright formant - ie: AY is something like 500hz in the back, and 1.5+k in the front (what you're calling a brighter vowel I assume), where AH is 1.5k in the back and 800 in the front. They're almost the same sound, but, the frequencies are 'caught' back to front in the formants. F1 is your structure, F2 is your clarity/pronunciation. Change F1 as you ascend instead of pronouncing a different sound, and I believe you'll get the answer you're really looking for.
my singing teacher told me to compress harder to hit these notes and stop cracking. it does work if i compress really hard. but its so much pressure. You seem like your doing it really easy. It is better than pushing up from chest voice. im hitting the notes but its so much work and strain and my tone is not good. What would you suggest?
"strain and tone is not good" - so, this obviously isn't right. I can also push the crap out of things, but, it's not sustainable, and yes, strains and sounds like crap. Exhale slightly, sing into the back of the head and shift away from pronunciation. Best - K
Everyone hears pitch correction in recordings nowadays. You are singing without pitch correction and no effects on these videos. If I could sing like you I would be the happiest guy alive!
I started off with country, Johnny Cash was more in my wheel house. But I used to sing along with Metallica, Wasp and Iron Maiden. Started to sing along with Soundgarden. Idk what sort of range that is but I can do it and then screw anything up in an instant. Some days I can and other days...
So yeah the low stuff is always so much easier to do.

It can be challenging to deal with some of these comments on TH-cam for sure. Everyone has their opinion, but the fact that you can hit all these crazy notes, especially considering how low your speaking range is, I would say you know a thing or two about how the voice works LOL!
I know people who do not like Robert Plant or Chris Cornell's singing, but yet, they are considered to be a gold standard by so many people. So, I think your friendly commenter needs to realize that his taste may be a bit different than others :) Rock on!
I did notice that last comment you referred to there Kegan, which I was going to respond to but thought twice about it as it didn't sound like a constructive comment but more like a disgruntled comment. Anyway, anyone who sings knows how difficult it is to sing unaccompanied. Obviously you've got no problem with pitch.
I have the higher range but I still have figure it out how to sing more freely there. And I find it that it depends on the song. Sometimes it's easier and sometimes it's harder. And I can make a conclusion. I'm not a native native speaker and I like learning languages in general. Also I learn about accents thoroughly. Like now I'm learning Chinese and the phonetic system is totally different to my native language. So I generally make out phonemes pretty good and the singer who uses vowels closer to my range it just works
Using your advice I find I can often get a much EASIER time hitting mix voice notes around G4-C5, the issue I find is they still don't sound GOOD. Defo think it'd improve if I could get some grit in there, are you going to cover that aspect at all? (or have I missed it)

I think your pitch is spot on, I've been learning allot recently from your videos and I've been changing my vowels like you suggested, my biggest thing ATM is, and forgive me I'll try to make this make sense. When I sing in head voice I'm focusing on my vocal chords being TIGHT , the only way to explain it is that I'm tightening my folds, the harder I tighten the higher I sing, the harder I tighten the more clean the sound. Does this make sense? Is this how I'm supposed to be singing high notes? I should also share while doing this I can only sing so high and I hit another ceiling, the reason I share this is because I'm figuring out the right placements and modification and support and all these things but the tightening of my vocal folds for higher head voice notes is something I'm unsure of I'm doing correct. Yep, makes sense. "tension" is really what happens when you're using the CT muscle - it shouldn't be uncomfortable or strained, but yes, it's a tighter feeling in some singers. The key in the hyper upper range is to use support/exhale to get you there instead of reaching. Best - K
@FoundationVocalStudio yes this makes sense, my CT muscle doesn't feel strained but I have been focusing on keeping it tight when I need to, I will keep working on moving the sound up and out instead of from my vocal chord area. Your vowel and pitch are ultimately derived from the same frequency/vibration - so, when you change one you must cater to the other. So, as you ascend, you can't just ask for the same sound as it won't exist at that pitch, so, you slightly alter how the frequencies within the vowel are received (vowel modification) and you'll find you can actually sing higher with an almost identical sound without pushing/straining/breaking. This is not often spoken about but I'm of the belief that if you can sing quietly with the same resonance and clarity it makes singing loudly a breeze. Is it possible to still sing these higher notes (A5 up) without using a ton of air support?
@@davidbgaskin "without using a ton of air support" is the kicker here - your concept of support is askew. I often explain support as a controlled exhale. Ergo, perhaps you're pushing rather than supporting, hence your question? A4 or A5? A4 yes, but A5 is a different story - that's really the top of my range now, and it's not really something that you could do 'quietly' in a full voice, it requires stretch and pressure. Best - K
I like to sing Epitaph by King Crimson. But I struggle to hit the note at the end of the second verse on the word "fools". It is a little easier if I go right to singing that line rather than after the whole verse. I think it's a combination of bad breathing technique and I need to put some thought into the vowel. The note also sits right under my upper passaggio.

Is there any way to add notes to my lower register? My last decent low note is a B4, but I can wobble my way down to an Eb2. I want to get lower and more powerful.
If you can wobble down to the E, it's likely you can improve that range. I wouldn't say you can "add", but you can definitely improve what's there. Go BRIGHT in your lower range, play with the support/pressure/air balance and remember - your vowels still come into play in your lower range. For context, I started out with a solid E2 - with better technique it's a solid B1 now. I can get lower than that, but, not something I'd really call part of my useable range. Best - K

Hi Kegan, I am a bit confused. You say that we need to narrow the vowels as we go up but other people say that we need to open them up. Do you all mean the same thing but describe it from a different angle? I guess we need to make vowel alignment so they all have a similar shape and therefore it means that we need to open up the narrow vowels and narrow down the wide vowels
Depends on where and what they're talking about. First break? Sure, widen it and shift into the palate - but, if they're not narrowing, it's likely they're not singing in a relative high register for their voice like I'm doing here. So, widen, then narrow it down, then, widen again is the general premise you'll find people are actually following. best - K

Hey Keegan I have a question. I took lessons with an opera teacher and they told me there are 5 vowels you should practice and sing the lyrics on. "Ah eh ee oh oo." Is this applicable to rock singing? I'm trying to trust the process. Would like to hear your thoughts. I know you sometimes talk about there being only really 2 vowels in singing that everything is based around.
Depends on context - I also took classical lessons for quite a few years. In classical, you're going to stick within your defined character fach, meaning, my range is capped at about F4, maybe G. So, that's fine with a vowel like OO or OH - but, if you want to sing say "I remember you" by Skid Row, these vowels aren't going to cut it (try it, and the higher I remember YOU" lines will break apart) - so, instead we're going for OE instead of OO (so, raise the tongue, get the ping in the front and modify the same as a front vowel, and secondly replace OH sounds like 'hope' in the same way, and replace OH sounds like 'god' as AH. This directly refererences to how Paul Rodgers, Sebastian Bach, Chris Cornell in their prime all sang their vowels with an incredible and effortless range - compare that to Eddie Vedder who sings OH and OO all over the place. Have a look at local rehearsal spaces - they usually do a discount if it's a 'solo' rehearsal, or, there might even be a small teaching space you could hire regularly for practice. This is what I used to do when I lived in the city and couldn't really practice or teach from home. Best - K
I personally practice inside a wardrobe with a lot of clothes hanging inside to avoid reverb and I put outside in front of it a Bluetooth speaker reproducing white noise as loud as it can 😂😂

Hey Rez! It's something I'm deliberately ignoring - I'd rather not put any energy into it. I feel the same, but I feel there's going to be a push in the other direction. AI isn't going to get up on stage and have a presence like Paul Rodgers or Layne Staley in our lifetime - even if people can fake a Metallica record online with it. I don't know the correct terminology for this but I can sing "wide" "open" vowels with ease, for ex- the high note in Man In The Box, or "Nightsssss" in Don't stop believing or "Mamaaaa" in bohemian rhapsody or any other constant high note like that. I struggle with fucking "small" or "closed" vowels. like "uuuu/oooo" as in bohemian rhapsody , "if im not back again" in bohemian rhapsody or singing the word "and" etc etc. I can't fucking figure it out😭

Your expectation on how things become 'full' such as in my case are askew - you're not getting an immediately full sound from my instruction, so, you're just going back to holding. "I cannot compress to create that chesty tone"

About the active exhale and keeping the closure
I'm saying I just literally have no conception of how to do that, either it goes breathy or it's back to just squeezing, OR it's just head voice that "tries to immitate" chest and absolutely nobody really explains what gets someone there.
I don't mean to offend though, it's just that these issues are not talked about much

So, my suspicion is that you're not actually singing the vowel correctly - even if you think your 'pronouncing' the vowel in the same way you think I'm doing. There's actually a shift internally within the same vowel that allows you to sing higher - this then makes all of this possible. I'll do a video about your questions when I get a moment. Best- K

I don’t know if I read your comment well but my suspect is that you are not using the right muscles to get there and using high larynx chest instead.
Held back air on mixed voice feels bad and sounds awful and artificial if you are clean singing.
mixed voice just feels easy and makes you feel like you are in great control of your own voice even tho you are freeing out it.

Imagine watching your vids and seeing how effortless it appears for you now after how many years then trying to say it's outta your range and it's off pitch... People always pretending to be experts and put others down when they actually know nothing lol
Maybe Danmanley2525 didn't like your tone, but referred to it as pitch not knowing the difference?? Depending if you're watching YT video's on a phone, laptop, or desktop with proper speakers could make all the difference in sound quality.
