I think Otto and Alicent both think Aegon is easily manipulated so in their minds whoever gets him first will be able to impose their will on him. But in the future this will probably end up backfiring on them since now he’s King. As Tyrion said “It's hard to put a leash on a dog once you've put a crown on its head”.

Agreed, that's why the Fleabottom Hide and Seek was just a drama device. It doesn't truly matter who found Aegon, he would be crowned, and once he gets power, not even he knows how he'll use it. Prepare for Joffrey 2.0, or rather, Joffrey was Aegon 2.0?

I’m not so sure. I’m not dead set on this but I was getting a vibe that Otto was going to kill Aegon if he got him first, and that Alicent suspected this and made sure to get him first. I wouldn’t put it past Otto to get Aegon out of the way for Aemond, yes despite being his grandson.

Fair. Perhaps. I forgot Otto wants to feel like he’s king. But Aegon is so apathetic how do we know he’d go along with anything. Whereas Aemond is learned and measured and gets the game. I feel like Otto sees him as similar to himself and could actually reason with Aemond rather than manipulate him. Like actual council. If that’s a thing in westeros.

Poor Alicent and her overconfidence in her son. What gets me is that episode 9 highlighted how unrealistic it is that Alicent wouldn’t realize that she misheard/misunderstood what Viserys said. NOBODY believes Viserys would do wish such a thing, not even aegon himself. Heck, I don’t even think Otto even thinks that’s what he said, but he’s just going along with it because it removes the need to try to convince Alicent that what he’s been planning to take part in all along is the best move. As aegon himself said, Viserys had Aegons entire life to name him heir, but he didn’t. And putting raenyra in danger would be the last thing he’d want.

Not sure if Aemond is simply 100% loyal to his mother because she was the only parent who seemed to care about him. Or if Aemond dislikes Otto because Otto is so determined on Aegon being the King, despite Aemond being the better candidate seemingly. How does that make any sense? 1. The Hand of the King is essentially the Prime Minister. Viserys and most of the kings in the series actually do not know how to run the government. That is why they find statesmen like Ser Otto Hightower, Lord Tywin Lannister, Lord Jon Arryn, and Lord Ned Stark to do it for them. Anyhow, Viserys brought Otto back because: A) Ser Otto was the most qualified candidate; none of the remaining Small Council members are particularly strong choices. B) Viserys fears conflict, and he knows this would please Alicent. C) Viserys was lazy and didn't want to risk choosing an incapable Hand.
      2. This is extremely common, both in Westeros and in real life Medieval analogues. Again, the king does not really run his government; he appoints a Hand to do that on his behalf. (Well, in this case, a queen.) Furthermore, the idea that Rhaenyra is a capable and responsible leader is laughable. She has three obvious bastards, whom she is attempting to pass off as legitimate. How much do you really think she cares about the realm after producing so much evidence of dishonorable conduct?

Though it conflicts with the statements the show writers put out, your video points out why Rhaenys would feel the need to not just escape with her dragon out the hillside exit, but to violently interrupt the ceremony instead. Without that act, Aegon II would have the full support of King's Landing and later the 6 kingdoms. Unlike the book where the violence is local and limited to lords/ladies that didn't accept, here the smallfolk are involved in the Game of Thrones with a big visual indication the Targaryens are not united on this crowning of Aegon.
Also, notice the parallel of Rhaenys in the crowd as the royal family is on stage crowing Aegon paralleled to Arya Stark in the crowd with the royal family on the stage executing her father. While I doubt the writers intended it, there's some nice compares and contrasts that could be made with that.

Her expression, gazing at them balefully as they realize their continued lives rest on her mercy, is a marvel of complex ambiguity.

What I thought from just watching it was that Aegon was weak willed and easily manipulated, and so he could be pretty easily strong-armed into doing anything. But also Otto seemed to want to do things in a bit more of a smart way through hiding information about the kings death and keeping everything secret while working in the background to make better preparations for the coming war, while Alicent wanted to do things all officially and in the open because she genuinely believes its the right thing to do and such. In my mind, if Otto's men had gotten Aegon first then things would have played out more similarly to what happens in the book. It is an interesting difference from the books.

Do you have a cope explanation for why Rhaenys would slaughter hundreds of innocents but refuse to kill the greens she caught in the process of committing a coup against her sworn Queen? I really hate that the show-writers even put her in that position to have the opportunity. It makes so little sense to me, I was completely thrown out of my immersion and has left a sour outlook on the future of the show for me.

      1. She doesn’t know how this story unfolds, maybe she believes bloodshed can be avoided.
      2. Literally one night ago she dined with her family and the dying king whom she loved and heard his wish of the family uniting. What makes anyone thing it would in character for it to be easy for her to kill her relatives?
      3. The people she killed are commoners, targaryens are royalty and as good as any of them is, they don’t give a fuck about peasants.
      4. She didn’t confront the killing of the peasants, it was in the heat of her waking up imprisoned in the middle of the coup and desperately wanting to escape.
What is dumb here is certainly not that she didn’t kill her relatives and not even that she killed peasants.
What is dumb is that they had her smash the fucking floor for no reason (how didn’t she smash her head?) when we have seen in previous scenes that the dragon pit has ways out.
They could have made her fly in from the same door she exited and kill 10 peasants in her landing, not 100.

He told Alicent that Raenera will kill her children if she takes the throne since the realm will never support her if a male air exists. He used that to convince Alicent that Raenare must be usurped. And now he's saying "oh we must kill Raenera and her children, we have no choice, her supporters will fight otherwise". Oh, so it turns out the realm would not rise up against the Raenera after all, you just told Alicent all those years ago what you would do if you were in a position of power and thought there are others who have a claim.

I don't understand how Alicent thinks Rhaenyra can be saved. Aegon is crowned, he is the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. To deny the king is to commit treason and is punishable by death. In this very episode, we saw more than 1 person executed for just such an offense, and Alicent has already admitted that Rhaenyra will never bend. What exactly does she think the outcome is going to be of someone who sits in defiance of the kings power?

      @woodswitchprints ปีที่แล้ว +1

Imprisonment, probably. It's possible she intends to hold her as a royal hostage in the event she never bends.

@@fvefve12 yep, she definitely still cares for Rhaenyra, as pointed out by Otto in their private conversation. Episode 8 also really showed how she really did long for Rhaenyra and basically wanted to make up after Rhaenyra apologized and also acknowledged her effort and loyalty to Viserys

It's silly the way they're trying to present alicent as not ready for a huge death match vs. Rhaynera

It was Otto sent them to death, he could because there was no king. Alicent believes this can be settled without violence. She thinks she can convince Aegon to spare Rhaenyra’s live, and at the same time convince Rheanyra to accept Viserys’s “last word”. That’s what she intended to do.

It is kind of weird that she goes from trying to stab to peace just because the creepy old leper told her to.

It annoyed me that you watch episodes where it jumps 10 years yet this one episode was taken up with just hunting down Aegon ( such a waste especially when there’s only one episode left in this season ) !

I know! It is so odd. But the remaining seasons are going to be fire! Much more detail and that story building writing you saw in GoTs. I'm excited.

they already have a stopping point for the season. Also the time jumps were meant to get to this point. It was the hardest part of the show because they had 20 years of story to tell of how we got here. Now they can relax and actually slowly tell the real story. The time jumps were necessary. Think of the last 3 episodes as a separate movie from the rest of the season.

Alicent would be stupid to let Aegon fire the entire council. These are the guys who backed him in taking power and are the only people he are sure are in his corner even if they are there for personal gain. But as far as Otto is concerned, that's his grandson, so at the end of the day, he's going to do everything in his power to make the people perceive that Aegon has a good reign. Now. with alicent whispering in his ear is sure to happen, but aegon literally doesn't care about ruling so Otto will still be able to have his way here since he'll be drafting the policy and having aegon sign off on it or better yet tell him to go drink and sleep around while Otto does all the work. Win win for both of them.

I feel like this episode should have been called "The Amazing Race", instead of "The Green Council" haha. Less councilling, more racing/hunting.

Huh, totally unrelated [probably] but does the dragon's pupil at 2:06 strike anyone else as similar in shape to Aegon's dagger? I wonder what the significance of that is

In regards to Larys Strong. According to the story. He would be the uncle of Strong Bastards. So either side wins hot d . He could play both sides. Green or Black. However I would think the Blacks would kill him before they would show their feet.
