Don't be error detectors

  • One of the biggest pitfalls that choir directors can fall into is pointing out the PROBLEMS within their choir without immediately addressing the "why". Don't be error detectors, be problem solvers!

    So what you're saying is, continue to be error detectors, just don't be a jerk about it.

    If you're a good choir and good musicians, the blunt way of doing it is more efficient.

      Not every choir is experienced enough to be able to fix themselves just by pointing out the error.
      As an absolute amateur I find it much more helpful for the director to use any of of the approaches mentioned above. Just pointing out the issue often leads to frustration and mounting tension, especially if it isn't resolved quickly and easily, as an individual singer often can't be sure, what the exact issue that the director hears is.
      At least from my experience it often happened this way when I tried my best to take the director's notes on board but was ultimately unsure whether it was effective or not. Sometimes other singers in the same voice had difficulties, but incessant repeating of the same phrase with the same instructions really did not help.
