Thats the reason they were scary, the fact that such an icon of purity was used as a remorseless killing machine, also the fact that you are not able to observe it's behaviour adding to the fear of the unknown, or being capable of communicating with it

Not sure if 173 can fall under the same effect of being locked when being looked by another statue.
But seeing as how even 682 was afraid of it, you can say 173 has immense physical power and invulnerability.

Even though the science behind the Angels is laughably stupid (observation in a quantum sense doesn't mean "looking" at it), the way they are portrayed is really frightening. It plays off the fear of the unknown as you can never see them act and that creates a gap between the reality of danger and the supposed harmlessness of a statue. Terrifying indeed.

I always just assumed there was a bit more going on there and this was just a conveniently easy way to explain it. Something like them being partly spiritual creatures, so the "quantum lock" would be more a "spirit-quantum locking" and refers to them being observed by an entity with a spirit/soul as well. Which is why more mundane physics "observation" actions (such as interaction with other particles and so on) wouldn't count in this sense.

I read somewhere that one of the episodes tht featured the Weeping Angels broke the fourth wall in a pretty meta way. As we all know, they stop existing if someone sees them, but there were a couple shots that featured an Angel or 2 but with nobody else in the room to watch them. That's because *we* can see them. The audience is looking at the Weeping Angel and that's why it's still in its statue form

  • @ashleyellis182

The weeping angels are genuinely the most terrifying creatures that have ever appeared on Doctor Who. They're simple and common, but at the same time, what they're capable of doing is unexpected, that exactly what makes them frightening, especially in the episode "Blink".

Thank you for covering this! I'm a massive Doctor Who fan, and this has delighted me as a recent find. Whilst being at the Doctor a Who Experience in Cardiff in Whales, I also found out that due to the loss of sight and not being able to see anything directly, Weeping angels can also move in the loss of light, though I feel like that was seen in the Tenth Doctor episode and the episode featuring Matt Smith and Karen Gillian

What really makes weeping angels a stroke of genius is how perfectly they fit to the medium they are used in. Problem with Doctor Who, just like many other sci-fi and fantasy series is that creating creatures out of this world isn't cheap. And what if the whole premise of the show is that almost every adventure happens in different point of time and different place in whole universe? Yeah, it's going to require some creativity and heavy compromises if you want to do justice for such ambitious idea. But what if there was nearly immortal and invulnerable race that required zero animation because they simply don't exist when anyone sees them. They could be in any point of time and any place and since they eat time energy any encounter with them anywhere is already justified when protagonists dabbles in time travel and no matter what's the scenario, making them won't cost much so the team can go crazy with remaining budget. And as added plus they tap to some of our most primal fears and thus will be almost universally effective as horror creatures so they won't be hard to market for wider audience.
It's amazing how such simple concept can have so many positive qualities

Ya missed a key point of the creators that added to the angels... They are locked in place when someone views them.. even those watching the episode!!! It breaks the fourth wall and all but it's pretty damn amazing!! Why ya never see them really move on the show. We see them as well ;) when the lights go out and on... Or when it cuts to a character and back.. they move :)

Every time I see an angel statue now, or any statue, my heart races. I'm 16! Seeing statues shouldn't scare me! I think I may have developed an actual fear of statues since I was 10. Thanks Dr Who for ruining my childhood! (I do still love Dr Who though.)

I remember when I was a kid, we used to play a game like this with my friends. One person must face the wall and counts to 5 (at any speed at their will) then turns back. While one person is doing the counting, the others move toward him and must stop completely when the guy turn back. If someone gets caught while moving, that person lose the game, gets punishments and will be the next person to faces the wall and counts. If someone reach the counting guy without getting caught, that counting guy loses the game. It was a very fun game to us until we all watched that episode. It ruined everything....

I started watching the New Dr. Who series back in late 2012, and to say the least, the Weeping Angels actually are terrifying. I can't remember the name of the episode in which this young lady was transported back in time when she and a friend were inside a house, that's when the angels moved--in secrecy ofcourse--and transported the girl in time, and at the same time a knock on the door was heard. While the other girl still in present time, answered, a middle aged man gave her a letter from her friend who was transported back and the guy happened to be the grandson of her friend. It was then, the angels were scary AF.

Great videos man. But you neglected one of the scariest parts about them. You mentioned how the image of an angel becomes it and show a great scene where Amy is stuck in a room with the video, however what makes them truly terrifying is if one looks at them, the eyes capture their image and slowly the victim will become an angel, starting an unconscious countdown, before they literally turn to stone and the only way to delay it, is by closing ones eyes. Potentially my favourite Dr who creature apart from the shadows of the library carnivorous creatures that feast on anything in shadow, you should do a video on hem next. Keep up he good work bruz

CHEN-7!!!! but also the daleks, Ohhhhh and maybe the Zygons!!!! OMG there are so many!!!!! The Silence!!!!! The Gangers!!! Particularly how that technology was used to abduct Amy the siren and how she came to be stuck in the rift with the pirates. OOOOhhhhh the asteroid House and Idris the Tardis!!!! The monitor from the god complex and how that whole place actually worked!!! The tenser!!! the little boy who sent the doctor a distress call from across the universe because he was scared of the monsters, The Nano-genes in the London Blitz that infected a little boy and rendered people all over terrified of kids in gas masks. The Nesteen and how Rory eventually becomes one!!!!!! Psychic Pollen and now that works to tern you against yourself So many species, the Vashta Nerada and the Midnight Enterty!!!!! The Cubes from the Slow Invasion, Prisoner Zero, The untempured Schism that corrupted the young Master, Red Eye and how this caused the Ood to become so sick, The Creature from The Satan Pit and how this infects Toby, The live sun and how this infects and picks off the crew of the dead space ship as it careers toward a live sun in the episode 42, the Dream Crabs from Last Christmas, The Wire from the Idiots Lantern, The Clockwork Droids who try so hard to acquire Madame DePomoadore's brain to repair their ship using many time windows, The organism from Waters of Mars, the creature that hatches from the moon in Kill the Moon and why in the hell does the doctors regeneration sometimes cause him to slip into a coma, which might I add terns into a febrile coma (with only one heart beat) after Rose wakes him so he can blow up a killer Christmas tree. so many events and bits of tech, and so much untapped knowledge.
