    I came back to this video because I have been seeing a LOT of PragerU ads (full videos) as ads on channels that are specifically educational channels, often with a liberal or left of center bend. PragerU is so unethical to me in the way they misrepresent themselves and target vulnerable populations. My guess is the content creators have literally no idea that’s happening. It drives me crazy.

    • @mayaenglish5424
      @mayaenglish5424 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      PragerU is so insidious. I actually watched one once because I genuinely try to listen to people with different opinions than me and I'm not Super far left or anything, compromise and health debate is important and possible blah blah (optimism, how I miss it.)
      The weird thing is how well it was written and structured to come off as reasonable for like the first 4-5 minutes before steadily sliding into batshit crazy land. I was like, well, I don't agree with that part, but you made a good point about this, hmm, maybe this isn't so bad... WTF? lol.

    • @emmafountain2059
      @emmafountain2059 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't actually mind it that much when I personally get one and I usually let it play all the way through. Advertisers don't pay and content creators don't get paid if you skip a particular ad, so watching it all the way through essentially takes money from the advertiser and gives it to the content creator. It's especially great when their ad is like 10-15 minutes long. Generally the longer the ad the more money they have to pay for it, so I'll just leave it in the background and go do something else for like 15 minutes.
      It would be amazing if they fixed it but I seriously doubt that's ever gonna happen.

Ultimately this also majorly the algorithms fault.

      @orangutantapioca1530 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@OliverFoulkesMRO2013 I’d say cutting through the icing is the best way to expose the hate speech.
      The example Hank talked about where someone is “just telling people what the Bible says” could be exposed by showing that the person has not put out any videos about other weird rules from the Bible. Have they talked about it being a sin to get divorced? To wear two different types of cloth? To touch the skin of a pig? Have they explained the way the Bible suggests to evaluate how much a slave is worth? Or how to evaluate the dowry you should require when allowing a man to marry your daughter, as if marriage were a financial transaction? Have they explained the poetry of the Bible actually meaning a woman’s sexual organ when it talks about things ‘flowing from her navel?’ I’ve checked many medical texts, nothing should be flowing from anyone belly button, but women have a nearby body part which can flow and which has been the source of many poems throughout history. Seems pretty obvious.
      If the ‘just saying what the Bible says’ person isn’t interested in talking about even twenty five percent of the Bible and instead focuses on the specifically anti-LGBTQIA+ parts, then they’re telling you that they want to talk using hate speech but only if they can hide behind religion to do it. It’s disgusting that TH-cam would pretend it’s impossible to see through this and I’m certain it’s insulting to Christian’s to see their faith used to attack when their savior specifically told them to “love thy neighbor”.
      TH-cam, do better. Stop pretending it’s impossible, just do better.

    Hey Hank, throughout my time as a highschool student, a college student (at Eckerd, ironically), and now a medical student (at Mayo, over in Minnesota), I've benefited so much from your various TH-cam enterprises, mostly Crash Course, Sci Show, and Healthcare Triage. As a member of the LGBT community, I am also outraged about TH-cam's willingness to throw the LGBT community under the bus as soon as money is at stake. So that is why this video convinced me to start supporting you on Patreon. At some point we must recognize that advertising-supported media is fundamentally incompatible with education because scientific truth is often unpopular. It is important that you are able to continue making good educational content that uses knowledge and understanding to lift up everyone in your audience, especially the impressionable young people that the ADF and their ilk are trying to target with their hate speech. So anyway, keep making awesome content!

      I can't begin to guess how hugely helpful it would've been if I could've seen positive, friendly videos (and text and audio) when I was a teen and young adult, struggling because I had gay feelings, and got bullied and didn't feel I had anyone safe to talk to or to, uh, figure it out with. (Boyfriend? It didn't even occur to me that a boy might want me for a boyfriend, or that I could have a boyfriend. All I knew was, I wanted friends I could talk to, and some friend who'd like to do what I wished I could do, just to figure it out, the same way the straight kids could with their boyfriends / girlfriends.) And getting bullied because people _said_ I was gay. All the bad feelings, questioning, the unhappiness and loneliness. -- So I am hugely grateful that now, adults and youth can put their stories out there, visibility, to let others learn how they feel, what they care about, to learn that hey, it just might be OK for me to be not straight. I might be able to find friends to talk to or someone to love and be loved by. imagine that, such a basic need, so completely squashed for so many folks, youth or older. Visibility is a good thing. -- And several very ordinary people are my heroes, just for being themselves and saying, sometimes in a very raw emotional way, sometimes in a very thoughtful way, how they really, truly feel, what they want, or just plain living their lives, being people. Things like that help me even now. I am still dealing with this, even though I've been out for years now. All that old stuff to unlearn or relearn, all those things to get over with and make a new, better life. It is an ongoing thing. And I still run into the negatives way too often out there in the real world, so I know it still affects all of us. So if just putting the word out there, being real, makes a difference for even one teen or adult, one questioning person, one potential ally and friend, then that is worth a whole lot for those of us who dearly need it, and it could just save a few lives.

      Very well said! I'm only 14, but I've known I was different since I was around 7 or 8, and I was ashamed. TH-camrs like Miles McKenna are what helped me figure out what I was. At first I thought I was bi (I'm not saying being Bi is a phase, because I know for most people it's not, but for me it was), partially because I was a) in denial and b) honestly had no clue and all I knew what that I liked gorls. So know I know I'm gay. Still, TH-camrs are who helped me discover who I was, and it's upsetting that TH-cam is trying to stop young kids and teens from getting information about themselves

    I have always thought you were awesome, but right now I have overwhelming amounts of love and respect for you. Thank you for taking such a strong and unambiguous stand on this issue. As a queer, disabled woman who makes content about adult sexuality, I'm rarely able to take advantage of monetization (although it seems videos about making your own toys are cool, but discussions about consent - and how important it is - are bad for advertisers). The idea that these hateful groups could be buying ad spots on my content is enough to make me sick.

I may not be a creator myself and at an age and level of self acceptance and love where I can ignore the BS in these gross preroll vids but I as a viewer don't want the creators I love to deal with this shit being put before their own video just on the front of how could youtube let their platform literally put hate before love and acceptance

      DO lbgt tubers put lgbt tag on their videos even if they dont talk about sexuality?
      Also is there tag like cis or straight that get flagged same way?
      Also isnt anything sexual automatically controversial/un-monetized on youtube?

    • @kmart1396
      @kmart1396 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Samuel Silver being LGBT+ isn't inherently sexual... same way being straight isn't either. So like tagging it either way shouldn't be an issue. Sexuality just describes who you are attracted to. Also this is about shitty people paying to putt their anti-LGBT propaganda in front content of users who are open about their sexuality and/or gender

      It gets worse, because of how monitization works on TH-cam (see CGP Grey here th-cam.com/video/KW0eUrUiyxo/w-d-xo.html to learn more about the base system before the demonitization category) PragerU and propagandists like them are paying almost nothing for their ads.
      On top of that, they embolden and help organize the trolls, muddy the waters, and take up advertising slots that the main audience of the channel will instantly click to skip, meaning they don't have to pay for those slots on top of the already lowered price.
      Then, because the demonitization puts the voices speaking out against hate in a lower ranking for the recommendation algorithm, the balance is even further tipped in favor of the demogogues paying to spread hate.

      I asked a Priest and a Rabbi about that. They gave a similar answer: imagine a parent finds out their kid did something really bad. Like, a parent found out their child killed someone. The parent can love their child with all their heart, but has to do something. So they send their child away. Hell is that away part. And in the Bible, hell is basically the absence of God, and in the Torah it's the pit where Jews would cremate dead bodies (Sheol).
      Now, why is consensual sex between two men (the Torah specifically bans male homosexuality, but doesn't address female homosexuality) punishable by death, while raping a woman is punishable by a fine and offering to marry the person the man raped? There isn't a real satisfying answer.
      As for the judgement thing, people say "that's only among people of the faithful," meaning you have to be "one of them" to not be judged. Which is kind of crazy.

Yeah these ads arent going to magically change our sexualities but in a society that shows and has historically shown LGBTQ+ people massive amounts of hostility, disgust, and outright hatred for no reason, it would stand to reason that a person who is struggling to come to grips with their sexuality in that environment could be psychologically harmed by content that's mission is to voice disgust, unacceptance, and outright hatred towards LGBTQ+ people. And there are multiple studies that have shown this.

    Back when I was in high school and closeted, there was this big corkboard in the hall covered in information on scholarships. Some of them were general, others were very specific. There was even one scholarship for LGBT+ youth. One day, a man - a parent of a student, I think - saw the LGBT scholarship and tore it down. There was an article in the paper a few days later about "the controversy" and a picture of the man in question looking stern and resolute. I think I should have felt angry, but instead I just felt tired and a bit sad. It was a small town and mostly conservative, so this wasn't exactly out of step with local values. These ads remind me a lot of that man.
    Hank, thanks for getting angry. I don't always feel like I can, and I know I should. Otherwise, I'd just accept this as another thing to endure. I've traveled a bit and been out of the closet most of the time since high school, but old habits die hard.

    I’d like to know why there’s a like/dislike for ads if I can’t make them stop. I got the same ad for Scientology for weeks even after skipping and disliking many, many times. I’d love for the people I watch to have the option not to have ads that are controversial. That would be awesome so that it doesn’t look like the creator is supporting medications, political videos or other weird content.

    Can we get an option to see who is advertising on our videos? I think that would be fair and honest. People think that advertisements are endorsements from a channel, it happens with TV, so why not youtube? Even though we as creators have no control over advertisements

    • @kittymervine6115
      @kittymervine6115 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      also you make content that keeps youtube alive. If youtube pisses off the creators, they will end up with bland content that no one will want to watch. They have to think about the people that MAKE what youtube SELLS.

      +edt49er You are actually free to contact coca cola, ford, etc and any well established advertisers to hammer out a deal to have their ads play on your videos and bypass youtube's adsense. However if you aren't going to do this or you are so insignificant that it isn't worth Ford's time to sit down with you for direct advertising, don't forget you are still a small non-established fish. +edt49er Sorry I wasn't trying to imply I was going to put you on blast on that subreddit; I don't even have a reddit account. All I meant was that each community gets this sort of crap to a certain extent. I think a strong comparison I can offer you to illustrate that at the end of the day we are in the same camp; we're allies against ads which by coincidence don't meet our beliefs: vegetarian/vegan channels are getting McDonald's ads which are obviously in conflict with channels who advocate for animal welfare. I think to lessen any hurt you and your friends may be feeling is to look at it in the following way: money is required to sponsor these anti-gay ads and personally I'd just laugh them off because at the end of the day; an ad isn't going to change your orientation so the joke is on whoever wasted their money trying to convince you otherwise. You know what I mean?

    I have a channel on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict asking Israelis and Palestinians to answer people's questions on the conflict, their societies, cultures, etc. TH-cam demonitizes often based on their own political considerations - for example, a video of Palestinians being critical of Palestinian society is often demonitized but a similar video of Israelis being critical of Israeli society is not. Most of the time, I cannot figure out what specific phrase, word or issue they believe is not appropriate for advertisers because they don't tell you.

    • @CoreyGilShusterAskProject
      @CoreyGilShusterAskProject 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Also, an issue like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict gets people who are supporters of one side and haters of the other. So even reporting something benign about one of the sides will make people on the other side angry because they view the conflict in zero-sum terms.

    I think the easiest way to solve this without silencing conservatives (which some social platforms DO have a history of doing) is to say that the ad is not allowed to, literally or in the gist of things, contradict the content of the video it runs on. Like, for example on a video that tells you about the pros of birth control, you couldn't have an ad for baby clothing for example.

    • @zacharyhenderson2902
      @zacharyhenderson2902 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The problem is neither TH-cam nor the advertisers can monitor exactly what videos their ads go on. For example, a video talking about gun control may have an ad for a concealed carry holster, because they're both tagged as gun-related. Or pro-life video may have a Planned Parenthood ad on it, because they're both about abortion. With billions upon billions of videos being watched every single day, it's tough to monitor for mistakes

    • @thisone6600
      @thisone6600 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Zachary Henderson And I get that, I just think that there is a case to be made for more specific tagging

    • @facebren
      @facebren 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a great idea - in my case I've seen ads on videos that were not controversial but simply made it obvious I would never buy the product - which is something you'd think advertisers would *like* to filter for. It seems to be common because the tags are similar and don't seem to discriminate based on whether it's promoting the product or not.
      This is actually an issue I have with Google searches sometimes - I want to look up "not" something but it keeps giving me results which use that. I know you can use the quotes to tell Google you want to specifically look for those words in that order, but sometimes I don't want the phrase after the "not" to be specific (I want it to inlcude synonyms and similar topics). I know you can use the "-" to tell Google to not include results with a certain word/phrase in it, but I *am* looking for that phrase, because I want to see the cons or alternatives to that.

    • @thisone6600
      @thisone6600 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nathan Harris True, but I think that's a rather tame example. Like, it's annoying, but it won't be harmful to the person watching it. The cases he talks about are. And so are a lot of others. Like, a friend of mine, who has lost a child and was watching videos about that topic got an ad for children's clothing. That's not OK. And I think it's also both unnecessary and not intended by the company who bought the ad space. Like, the best case scenario is they are wasting money, the worst is they are actively causing someone mental anguish.

    • @zacharyhenderson2902
      @zacharyhenderson2902 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThisOne I agree with your point about more specific tagging. But to be fair, in the tragic case of your friend losing his child, may God be with him, the mechanism for choosing ads for him really had no way of knowing he had lost his child. All they knew was that he had a child at some point in the past, if that makes sense. Also, I would say there is a huge difference between an anti-gay ad and an ad that references your deceased child

      most AIs are neural network/machine learning algoritmes and what they do seems intelligent, but it is nothing more than a very complicated curve fit. They will "learn" all humaneties biggest errors if we are not very careful. For all situations where one uses optimization algoritmes one should be aware that they tend to exploit errors in the setup, for AI that might be finding errors in games to achieve

      Except TH-cam's content creators don't own TH-cam and don't pay the bills when it comes to keeping it's servers running. Would it help TH-cam to sometimes receive feedback on their ads should something extremely polarizing get out there? Perhaps, but that doesn't mean that adding a feature to disable any and all of it's regular ads is going to help them. At the end of the day TH-cam is a business, not a charity.

    • @mjt1517
      @mjt1517 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      The thing is, Joseph, without the creators there would be no TH-cam. There would be no content for Google to monetize to pay bills or keep those red hot servers running.
      If I had a popular channel...filled with MY content that I created, I'd be completely pissed off if YT allowed an ad to appear anywhere near my content if that ad violated by own ideologies or values.
      No one is saying it's a god damn charity. We're talking about giving creators control over the ads that are displayed in connection with their content. If you can't understand the value in such an idea, then you're on the wrong side of this.

      I'm not sure he meant it's a good thing. It's just how things are. The fact that creators are the reason for YT success seems to have absolutely no bearing in YT recognizing that or treating them fairly. Creators have little to no power in the relationship--except big ones who, were they to leave, could actually take significant eyeballs, brand value, and money with them. That's why it's such a good thing that Hank speaks out about these things, even though he's not directly involved.

      Kitkat13 I am too. think I remember something about it in the old testement, but nothing in the new testement. What I do remember from the Bible is that the old testement was treated more as a history and the new testement involved Jesus continuously telling his followers to not be judgemental and to accept everyone whole-heartedly like he did, because that's the way a christian should be. We should spread love, not hate.

    • @SunflowerSpotlight

      That’s rough, to see a family member use faith like that. I was raised in a Christian household and still am a Christian, but I’m one of those live and let live ones who doesn’t talk about it much unless asked and isn’t fond of organized religion (the denominations thing is nuts). It feels like this is not about God, but about feeling right and comfortable in bias and bigotry. We don’t still Stone children who are uncooperative or women who have had sex with someone to whom they aren’t married, or people who act as mediums. We don’t shun them. We don’t throw our judgment at them and quote scripture at them for it. It’s not about God. It’s about wanting to have a reason to be right in what they already think. Lots of Christians embrace the New Testament God about most stuff but still go back to Leviticus about this one thing. It’s not cool and it’s not okay and it’s really making all Christians just seem.... so horrible and holier than thou and judgey. And Christians are supposed to self-censure other Christians, say, “You’re deviating from the path, dude, what is up? You’re hurting people! How can I help you stop drifting? You have to give an accounting of yourself when it’s your time, and do you think this will make things go WELL for you?” Where are the other Christians being pissed?? We need more people saying it’s not okay, not afraid to be talked down by the rest of the congregation, quoted to and harangued. Hopefully this will get much rarer to see in the next few generations and people will remember God as a God who is pleased by loving others and wishing them happiness and helping them, not saying their very selves are inherently wrong. I don’t know how people can feel like that’s okay!

    I'm bisexual. I'm not controversial. I'm not "nsfw". TH-cam should not consider me or the topic of bisexuality controversial. Doing so is actively violent by saying that lbgtqia people are not "safe" or "fit for everyday life". This is an argument homophobes use to hurt lbgtqia people because they reason that lgbtqia people "hurt others" by being who they are
    God this makes me so tired. TH-cam, just leave us alone. You obviously don't care.

      Revolting Swan yes. Passive violence can happen when something is withheld that is important to living. Like if an abusive parent doesn't give their toddler breakfast, but instead watches TV. While I completely agree the substance of your point, that definition of violence annoys me slightly. It’s mainly an innovation of post modernist academics working in the social sciences. Although, even there it is controversial - scholars who research things like war and crime tend to reject violence extending to general oppressive behaviour.
      Post modernist types are constantly redefining and schema - almost always quibbling about categorisation systems being arbitrary and seeking to broaden definitions. I’ve read entire bloody papers which are nothing more complex than ‘gender/race/historical periods/class/civilisation is a construct!!!!’
      Which is a. unhelpful because rarely is there a practicable, objectively justifiable replacement for discussing well...anything b. obvious. They just assert relatively simple ideas a hundred times and call it a breakthrough.and c. Obscurantist. I swear post mods mangle dictionaries for fun in their spare time.
      Sorry, that rant was pretty tangential. I swear my degree left with with intellectual PTSD.

    "Obey the government, for God is the one who has put it there. There is no government anywhere that God has not placed in power. So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow. " -Romans 13:1-2.

      I'm 100% on your side, Christianity does not support hate speech or crimes against gay people. This is very clear if you've ever heard of Jesus. Happy pride month!
      However, your quote is really not a good example because its interpretation is very fuzzy. Laws change, rulers change, politics is evolving. There were so many oppressive, restrictive and criminal regimes in history and some of them even exist today. Saying you should always obey the law of the land might mean committing war crimes or owning slaves in a pre-civil-war America.

      This is going to get deep quickly. Just want to pose this question- Who did Jesus advocate for and defend?
      -A despised tax collector
      -A widow
      -A leper
      -The poor e.g. the woman who gave two coins, her entire life savings, game more than the Pharaseses ever would.
      -Children
      I am certain that Jesus would flip tables in churches where the pastors ask for private jet money.
      TL;DR- Christianity is not anti-gay but pro-human, pro-loving relationship

      +Sierra Yes, you're right. I mean if I made a video on no matter what topic and Nestlé, McDonald's or some other evil company wanted to put an ad of theirs in or in front of it I think I should most definitely have the possibility to say no to that and risk not getting any ad revenue at all as a result in case no one else would want to put an ad in or in front of my video. I'd be perfectly okay with that risk. But I think it would not even be that risky since there would most probably be some company (or something else like that that I approve of) willing to put an ad in or in front of my video. And depending who that would be I would get less money than I could get from Nestlé or McDonalds. I wonder wherein the financial obstacle to such a rule would lie but I assume that youtube wants to have businesses etc. who can pay a lot and otherwise generate a lot of income more than other businesses. What I have no idea about is how much the difference would be to youtube for me to have a Ceylor ad in my video instead of an anti-gay ad.

      It's impractical. There are 1000s of advertisers that bid on videos. It would require going back to the old model where a content creator and an advertiser agree to work together, and I don't TH-cam/Google would be willing to take the massive add revenue hit from loosing the "real-time bidding on each customer based on dozens of data points" thing.

    • @kaleidostar88
      @kaleidostar88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could actually be implemented pretty simply. Advertisers currently can pick what categories of things they want to be shown against and an algorithm does it's best to make a good fit, but they don't get to pick and choose the exact videos they get shown on. They could do the same of for content creators and let them pick categories of ads. Not that I think TH-cam will actually do that because it makes things more complicated and would likely cut into their profits. They've shown many times that they don't really care that much about their creators, so the backlash would have to get pretty big for them to do anything.

    • @9072997
      @9072997 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough. I suppose if you were selective in who was allowed to advertise on your channel, the bidding wars would not get as high, so creators would be correctly incentivised to choose as wide a range of ads as possible.
      Apparently that system exists! Hank did a video on it!

  • @JonIvy
    @JonIvy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Advertisers should be put into buckets, and users/creators should be able to pick which buckets they want to see ads from or have ads on their channels from. This would drive up the quality of advertisements and their value, which would be good for advertisers and for TH-cam (cause more value can be charged more for).

      You can do that indirectly if you pause the advert and click on the little i in the bottom left corner. Then you get a menu to say you don't like the ad. It takes a while to train the algorithm not to show you certain types of ad but it can work over time if you consistently say "it's not relevant".
