Unannounced? I find it hard to believe. This is from Honningsvåg, if I'm not wrong, and most of the fishing vessels if relatively well moored. The storm was probably announced a day or two in advance, just someone who didn't care to look after their boats until the weather hit. Common problem all over the country, let the insurance take care.

We rescue boats almost every summer - boats that often get in trouble because of neglect, bad mooring and just plain idiotic stupidity (like having the stern facing out against the waves and when the first windy day appears during the summer, the boat fills and goes down in a matter of hour at max (happened last year)). Some boats we have rescued several times during the years.....
Xanthopteryx... the weather forcast cant always predict tornados... there arent real big tornados in northern norway but there are somtimes weather patterns the meterologists cant predict in troms where im from in northern norway ,,, we cald it FALL WIND ore FLOING.. it can say be sunny and calm and suddenly you hear and see a storm coming spesially if your out on open sea, and see the ocean turning GREY,, and it blows like crazy 5-15 minuts,,, and then it most times rain a while,, and 5 minuts after the rain stops its calm and sunny again.
@@samkom33 I know how it works - i work with weather forecasting. And remember what i said - ALWAYS anticipate storm and tie the boats according to that. We have had 20 m/s straight in and NEVER had any problem with our boat, since i ALWAYS anticipate stormy weather, even in the middle of summer.
@@Xanthopteryx hehe yes if you dont always plan for wourst case, you better have a good insurance. but 20 m/s wind isnt even storm? as a fisherman outside finnmark on a 78 feet boat, we once got cought in a big storm 64 m/s and had to seek shelter behind BEAR ISLAND.. THE boat handled the vawes well but even at full speed on the enging we wasnt able to sail against the wind-vawes so we could get to our fishing gear. hehe. But the strongest wind i have experienced was i think in 1995 i was on a cruise from Kristiansand norway to Hirtshals and the cruiseship couldnt get out of the dock even with the side trusters.. it was BLOWING 84 m/s dang! While we waited for the weather to calm down, the captain annonced that THE SHIP ESTONIA WENT DOWN NEARBY where we had been a few hours before.
yes i usually use 4 thick springlines and 2 thinner lines with rubber extensions on, directly from the bow and stern to the dock if i want my 35 feet 18 ton boat to stay glued to the dock say when im offloading fish ore taking ice onboard.. but if i suaspect wind, ore i leave my boat for days,,, i use only spring lines, and drop a few ankers a bit on the outside holding the boat away from the dock.
Anybody watching this please don’t go out in a storm to Moore your boat! Boats can be replaced a life can’t. You don’t know if a power line is down or what could happen.

If I had a boat worth anything, such as making my living with it, I'd figure a way to get it onto land and secured. Actually, my 15 footer IS on it's trailer near the garage. I hate to see boats wrecked because of lack of preparation.

this is why you always teather the stern forward.....it will keep your bow off the dock in very bad weather....* That poor wooden boat took a beating out there...!!!

Seen and been in worse. The water was a tad choppy, but manageable. The guy probably couldn't afford to replace the boat and it was important to him. That wasn't a well protected harbor. Where was it?

There isn't jack those guys on dock can do for those boats unless they plan to get in them and anchor them away from dock

Worst possible place for a boat in a storm is tied to the dock.
Not really. Lack of propulsion/steerage with wind/current driving the vessel on to rocks would be worse.

Boats on a swinging mooring naturally point to the wind and so, into the oncoming waves.

It appears that the majority of the men on the dock are wearing survival type suits. These would almost certainly be flotation devices.
