    I'm no tree-hugging conservationist but I can't help to wonder how this is sustainable. Imagine 1 boat, 36 hours, 1850 tons of fish. Now think about how many boats are doing this all over the World.

      Its not. Not to mention quotas making fishermen throw millions of tons away each year as certain species are not in a specific seasonal quota. Edited I forgot to mention that there could be hours between each quota and as change overs happen the guards are at their highest patrolling and give huge fines if they happen to find you as they seem fit targeting specific species out of quota.
      stupidity at its best.
      Fishermen dont want this, its their livelihood and understand these regulations are not sustainable.

    A whole fishing industry of small fishing boats in the North of Scotland was killed-off so the EU could allow these people to go out with their hi tech vacuum cleaners and suck up huge quantities of fish. Again, I’m not a tree-hugger but I recognize the difference between 5 guys on a fishing boat going into the North Atlantic for 3 days in a 30 ton wooden boat (a smack) and a factory trawler just sucking up massive quantities of meal-fish. Why not just drain the ocean and send out a guy with a dustpan and brush; it would be easier, right?

    There is something off here. I worked on a factory trawler out of Dutch. This way of retrieving fish from the cod end is way too inefficient and dangerous compared to hauling the bag onto the back deck, then emptying it into the live tanks before processing. There has to be some reason for doing it this way that skirts some sort of regulations against standard trawlers.
    It wasn't sustainable back when I fished and I could add up how bad these huge trawlers rape and pillage the ocean. I think they need to be outlawed completely.

    • @StudioVike
      @StudioVike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard.
      The newest boats today lower the fishing pump behind the boat and pump the bag empty without having to swing it forward on the side of the boat, with that solution it is much safer and more efficient.
      The boats today are more efficient in the fishing field than they were a few years back, but today there are quota based fishing that is strictly regulated.
      The boats are effective in the field, but spend most of the year at the dock.
      Effective fishing and more climate friendly in terms of pollution.

    • @richardjohnson4696
      @richardjohnson4696 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pumping doesn't look nearly as safe if the ocean was really stormy. I remember swells that our 250' ship would disappear from the horizon then pop back up, then disappear. I would be interested in experiencing something like this while on deck and seeing how the process is done.
      This video also showed what we would use occasionally, a mid water net at night, the rest of the time we were dragging the bottom.
      I just have a hard time believing that huge ships can be sustainable, especially when you have foreign vessels such as the chinese who send their fishing fleets all over the globe nonstop. It is only a matter of time before the ocean is depleted.

      Which do you want? Economist reply, political reply, financial reply, union reply, ecological reply.. We aren’t kids. We know there’s a limited supply of fish out there. The long and short of it is that you are wiping out entire shoals within hours in the same spot. There is simply no way that 100 small boats can do that. If you live on a lake and you empty the entire lake out over a weekend instead of fishing steadily all year round, you kill it. Then you add the other issues... the multiplier effect of 100 boats providing so much more employment, the personal relationships built between supplier and customer etc etc etc. I too like to fish and don’t say we should stop fishing altogether merely sustainably, like hunting..

They get the blame for the lack of fish? at the same time the meat production, chem industry, plastic pollution and oil industry are killing million of tons of fish by fucking up the eco system! a healthy ocean have insane amount of food! but a sick one you have to make hard restrictions on fishing to maintain the life thriving.

    I think it was Chief Seattle who said, "Only when the last tree is cut down, and the last fish is caught, will the white man see that you cannot eat money."
    How many vessels like the M/S Teigenes, from many nations, are operating in the oceans of the world? This level of mechanized fishing, by itself, is not sustainable. Add climate change into the mix; changing water temperature, salinity, acidity, sea level, currents, etc., and it's easy to imagine a complete collapse of the marine food chain.
    This is not clever or smart. This is suicidal.
