  • This video is just a brief overview of what a racing lawn mower is all about. I show the drive components, axles, transmission and everything else underneath.this mower has a briggs and stratton 28 cubic inch 12 hp motor and peerless 700 series transmission. most all other parts besides the frame are aftermarket parts from various types of machines or custom built parts. This is a uslmra mower bu could be raced with other groups including arma.

    Great video, Taking a lot of inspiration from your work. I’ve got the same mower model. It’s stripped to the chassis in my shop now. Where did you get your cart axle from? 36” x 1 1/4” right? Bearing hangers and all that from the same place? Thanks for the support and video!

    • @TheJanticJournal
      @TheJanticJournal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We bought most of our parts from BMI karting and EC carbeurators, but that was years ago and there are definitely other retailers out there.
      Axles are 36" x 1.25", 40" is max width sidewall to sidewall per USLMRA rules for our classes and wheels have 5" offset on each side (douglass 8x8's) so there's room for shaft collars.

    Hey what kind of belt is that? That doesn't look like a very standard belt. Can you post a photo/diagram of how you have the pulleys setup and to the 700 trans (is that a 5 speed?) - Trying to build for the first time and it's one of the things I'm trying to figure out before I start. Any help would be greatly appreciated! What model mower is that frame? Is there certain frames to steer away from - I read someone was saying stay away from MTD frames. Anyways! Thanks for the videos man! New subscriber!

    • @TheJanticJournal
      @TheJanticJournal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nicholas Brown It's just a 1/2" belt from tractor supply, they seem to hold up well. The transmission is a 5 speed, unfortunately you can't post pictures in comments but belt setup is close to how them come factory. Make sure you have the clutch on the slack side of the belt. My mower is an older craftsman, I like them but they're heavy, like really heavy. I know lots of guys like and run mtds. Some of them have a big weight advantage over a craftsman.

    What width axle are you using in the back? About 30"?

    • @TheJanticJournal
      @TheJanticJournal  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a 1-1/4 kart axle, it's probably more like 34" inches. Our rules are 40" maximum width at the widest point.

    i have a question, why not use the multi speed trans axle from the mower? are they not strong enough? im wanting to build a twin v powered drift mower and would like a multi speed trans

    • @TheJanticJournal
      @TheJanticJournal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In lawnmower racing we don't typically use trans axles because we would be stuck with a narrow and small axle size (typically 3/4"). Using the peerless 700 allows us to use a 36" wide 1-1/4" kart axle that is super strong and gives us the ability to fine tune gearing with different sprockets. If you're building a drift mower with some kind of plastic tires a transaxle should be fine. Btw keep an eye out, we have a peerless 700 transmission video coming out real soon.

    • @88MKlll
      @88MKlll 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      cool thanks, ya i was thinking of starting with the plastic sleeves but would hope to make it drift on rubber but love the idea of banging through 6 gears. im wanting to use a brigs twin v maybe the 27hp one and maybe twin turbocharging it and converting from belt drive to sprocket drive. but if the trans axle cant handle that id rather go straight to a set up that will.

    I've got a mid 90's murray mower and im gonna attempt to put a go kart axle and horizontal shaft engine in it that makes about 28 HP, would that be legal in any lawn mower race events ?

    • @TheJanticJournal
      @TheJanticJournal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tennessee Outdoorsman If you don't build it to a certain set of rules then it's most likely not going to be legal for any mower racing g that I know of. To me it sounds like you might be looking at building something like an FXS for USLMRA but there are other groups with different classifications.

      +Don Raabe I just install an oil seal on the output shaft, remove the reverse sprockets and chain and replace the grease with gear oil. I just had a bad race weekend and broke two of them. The lesson learned is never ever shift at full speed lol
