Anyone who doesn't understand the absolutely profound meaning of this line - I plead with you to study it until you find meaning. As a Euro-American raised in the Christian tradition I can assure you this has 1 million times more meaning than 99% of what's you will find in the Bible. The whole scene, not just the line.
To me Thomas represents dreams and fantasy. He speaks so noble of the people that he knows and exaggerates the truth and exaggerates the people he knows. Victors Dad does this as well when they play basketball. After each blissful story we are brought back around to Victor. Who represents reality and the cold hard truth. Thomas saw Victor’s dad as the man who saved his life and the man who took him to Denny’s. Victor saw his dad as a drunk and the man who abandoned and abused him. I think both sides represent our feelings to anyone we loved who didn’t know how to live in return. Forcing us to cope with who they were in terrible times or cope with what they meant to us in the best.
Thomas represents the wonderment of a child, and he is noble in his efforts. Victor represents what happens to children when they're abused and neglected. I feel like they represent the dichotomy of life. The happy times and the awful times, and when they are together its a push and pull. Its that way because Victor wants to deny his inner child, which is what Thomas is...Thomas tries to lift Victor but Victor can't let go of that pain. Victor lets go at the end when he finally cries while releasing his fathers ashes into the mighty river. That river not only takes his father, but it gives him the strength to cry. Thats how I see it anyway.
I'm part Polish/eastern european American on my mom's side and we have our own version of frybread called Langos. It's made a little bit differently though.
Dr. Evan Adams is from Tla'amin nation just down the road where I grew up. He and Adam did such a great job in this. "Thomas, you gotta get rid of those braids" Amazing acting, when Thomas heads towards the bus with hair flowing, looking so freaking stoic, then puts his glasses on and smiles and he is magically Thomas again.
Interesting fact is that the girl in this scene is Irene Bedard she did the voice for Pocahontas for Disney along with her cast mate Michelle St. John who voiced Pocahontas's friend Nakoma

The casting of Thomas and his grandmother was so good. They both did the same smile and laugh.
