The Reason why the Lakers Lost the 2004 Finals

  • Kobetards be like - "Ben Wallace shut down Shaq in the Finals, it wasn't Kobe's fault they lost." NO. The reason the Lakers lost the 2004 Finals was Kobe being the most selfish player in history and trying to play hero ball instead of feeding the ball to Shaq which almost always worked. Shaq crushed Ben or whoever was guarding him when he got his touches. When the Lakers fed Shaq, their offense ran smoothly. When they stopped feeding him, (largely due to Kobe's ball-hogging) their offense was atrocious. Shaq getting more touches = easy 2004 championship.
    2004 Finals
    Kobe - 70 bricks
    Shaq - 84 total attempts

Just remember... The Pistons WANTED the ball in Kobe's hands. Just think about that. People completely forget the first half of Kobe's career when it was him running around playing hero ball all the time when he had SHAQUILLE O'NEAL IN THE POST. @@jeremybamgbade How? So u expect him to just not shoot. Shaq was dominant, but 1 dimensional, the pistons had more consistent spacing while the Lakers had a few specialist but no true consistent floor spacers outside of Kobe. If kobe doesn't shoot like he did that series the pistons win in 4 since Shaq is too predictable. Even if he's unstappable and efficient, you can contain him, Kobe on the other hand could change the tide of a game a lot more effectively because his scoring opens up the offense for everyone else. Leading up to the finals Kobe had been the way, Kobe just gave out. Sure Kobe could have averaged 18 or 19 those finals on good shooting, but he had to shoot in order to keep them somewhat in it. Also, I honestly don't care what you think, Kobe is the 2nd greatest player of all time.

    • @jeremybamgbade
      @jeremybamgbade 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@user-ou5pm6gn9j Lol. The point wasn't to not shoot, it was to be smarter with the shot selection, ya know, like how he did the 3 previous years???. Dump the ball to shaq, he gets double teamed, he passes out of a double to Kobe for open or easy look, or to someone else who makes a play to get a quality shot.
Also, Shaq being predictable is a hilarious argument. Yeah he was predictable and yet he was unstoppable so your argument makes no sense. And you are in the minority if you think Kobe is better than Olujuwon, Kareem, Lebron, hell even Shaq LMAO. Look at his career averages, most missed shots ever, his career FG percentage is way nearer to Westbrook than to Lebron who has shot 50% for his career.

When LeBron loses against the Mavs in 2011, they forget that the Lakers were swept by the same exact team 2 series prior. When LeBron loses the 2-1 lead against the Mavs, they don't say anything about Kobe losing a 3-1 lead against the Suns and losing in the Finals against Detroit which they were heavily favored to beat. When they knock LeBron for losing against the Magic in 2009 and the Celtics in 2010, they don't talk about how LeBron out-performed Kobe when Kobe played those teams, but simply didn't have as good a team or coach. When Kobe loses in 2004 (and even 2008), it's bc he was learning but when LeBron loses in his first 7 seasons, it's bc he's a choke artist. LeBron took a bad Cavs team against a great Spurs team but to them, he just played like garbage but when Kobe loses against the Pistons and Celtics, he had to learn how to be the man, etc.

The '08 FINALS exposed Kobrick as a great regular season scorer against soft, finesse, non physical bottom tier defenses but when presented with a smart, physical, & intelligent defense which REFUSED to give up easy penetration to the lane/basket for high percentage dunks, lay-ups, & fouls which would result in free throw attempts Kobe became mentally intimidated & simply resorted to taking low percentage 25 foot bricks with multiple defenders on him lmao by the time the Celtics won GAME 6 by an NBA FINALS record clinching 39 point margin Kobrick was relegated to shooting 35 foot bricks/jumpers because he wanted ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with '08 NBA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Kevin Garnett (ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE smh as a Lakers fan that STILL hurts my feelings whenever they show GAME 6 of the '08 FINALS & Garnett's post championship interview when he uttered that phrase 😭😭😭😭), P.J. Brown, Leon Powe, Kendrick Perkins, or Glen "Ashy lips/Eating Popeyes Chicken on a private plane with $100,000 cash in your hands while simultaneously having a warrant out for your arrest/Big Baby" Davis. Those 3 scenarios FOREVER disqualified Kobrick from NBA G.O.A.T. player discussions in my book as a matter of fact I currently have him ranked #12 all-time in NBA history.

No shit, Shaq was eating the Pistons alive down low and all they had to do was feed him. But this was the peak of Kobe's beef with Shaq and I think it completely drove him insane that Shaq was out there looking fat but still dominating while Kobe couldn't get a bucket to drop. I mean, you have a Kobe bias, but you're not lying. If the Lakers just gave Shaq the damn ball, it was a perfect series for them. Detroit played slow, which is EXACTLY the way for LA to win. Their troubles came against teams that would speed them up (Portland 2000, Sac 2002, San Antonio 2003, Minny 2004) with some kind of trap or press or just attacking them with their guards. Chauncey and Rip were nice, but if you wanted to play in the 80's, LA could win if you played an efficient game.
THE PROBLEM WAS, Kobe was determined to win Finals MVP. You could see it. Even in the swing game of the series, Game 4, Shaq's last stand where he dropped 36 and 20 on the Wallace's heads, Kobe was jacking shots up in that 4th quarter that swung a tie game to an 8 point Pistons win that basically ended the series. 04 Shaq wasn't as dominant as 01 Shaq, but he was definitely enough to get 30+ a game and THEN let Kobe get more efficient looks off of him as the first option. Kobe just wasn't having it. And his 38 percent shooting AND mediocre defense on Rip and Chauncey (both averaged 20+ a game) AND the injury to Karl Malone doomed the Lakers.

Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Shaq was pretty out of shape at the time. Kobe’s shot selection definitely hurt the Lakers’ offense, but Shaq was gassed by game 5 because of how physical the Pistons were playing him. And on the other end, Shaq literally played no defense. Kobe locked up Rip Hamilton in Game 1.
Edit: Also I still think Kobe was more at fault this series. That court case he was dealing with, well why was he sleeping with that girl anyway if he didn’t want to have a reputation as a bad father? That’s Kobe’s own fault. Did he rape that girl? I have no idea, but Kobe admitted to sleeping with her and he settled his court case. Not a good look for him. But Shaq gets way too much of a pass for his lazy defense and being out of shape.

Ol' Dirty Dasher people love saying how shaq could have averaged 50 for the series, but the reality is that he lacked the stamina and endurance it would have taken to have taken that many shots every game. He played 47 minutes in game 4 and then turned around and got outclassed by Ben Wallace in game 5. For shaq to have taken the volume of shots needed to score 50, his shooting percentage would have dropped and even his already abysmal free throw percentage would have suffered as well. The lakers lost to the better *TEAM*

Maybe the tactic of the Pistons was ''let Shaq do whatever he wants, and we will shut down everyone else''. Same tactic Gregg Popovich made against Phoenix Suns in some games in those years, and that is when this tactic got attributed to him in the NBA. After all, he learned a lot from Larry Brown at Kansas University and in San Antonio Spurs. Larry Brown is in my opinion a better coach.
Another thing is that after this Finals, sometime in the summer of 2004, the NBA decided to eliminate FOREARM as a defensive tool, and hand checking practically vanished. Hence the reason in my opinion why they lost the Finals in 2005. This pistons team just played the best defense in the last 2 decades, and won a NBA Championship without a single super star, but with few good and two very good (offensive)players. NBA did not want this team, and other teams that might follow this concept to ruin the Stardom, and the product.
Then after November 19, 2004, nothing was the same anymore. Defense, slowly, had lower and lower impact on winning NBA Championships. After the last couple of minutes of the 3rd, and the whole 4th quarter of game 7 of the 2010 NBA finals, the NBA came officially into the (very) Soft Era. The rest is...not history, but a video game for kids.

On Paper you woulda thought the Lakers should demolish the Pistons right? Nope. First off if it wasnt for Kobe's 33 and game tying 3 in Game 2, the Lakers get swept. The Pistons doubled and triple teamed Kobe while Shaq got single coverage. It was good Pistons defense and some poor shot selection by Kobe but he is not the main reason they lost. Shaq's defense got exposed in guarding the pick and roll plus Gary Payton couldn't play and grasp the triangle, Malone was hurt so chemistry was hurt, Fisher played 15 less minutes backing up GP so that was an adjustment, Kobe and Shaq's beef behind the scenes and through the media. I blame Phil for not making adjustments to the Pistons defense and there was a story that Fisher and Rick Fox both went to Phil and asked them to start but Phil's ego wasn't having it. The same 2 guys who helped Kobe and Shaq win 3 straight championships. Kobe becoming a FA, Malone and the Vanessa Bryant situation, Shaq asking for 30 mil a season when he came into camp out of shape since his first championship and Lakers not wanting to pay him, Phil creating a controversial book called the "Last Season" and says Kobe was deemed uncoachable. Kobe Rape trial case, all these things happening. In Phil's book Eleven rings, he even says with all the turmoil it was a miracle they went to the finals. Kobe deserves some but not all the blame. Why the Pistons were the better team and dominant defensively through tactical strategy. Why do you think Shaq averaged 36 ppg in this series? It's because with Shaq you dominate but that perimeter threat in Kobe puts you over the top. Larry Brown took the Strategy that the Lakers did in 2001 to his Sixers and Iverson. Iverson is gonna get his but gets 2-3 guys on him to make it difficult even if he averages over 30 and make someone else beat him who the Sixers had no threats other than Iverson.

"Shaq getting more touches = easy 2004 championship"
this is laughable. they were just plain outmatched. feeding shaq more sure as hell wouldnt of made enough of an impact to go from getting crushed in 5 games to an EASY championship. With Detroits D that year there was nothing they couldve done that wouldve made it an easy series that defense was way too much for them to handle as evidenced by them pathetic scores they put up. They lost every game by double digits and the final scores looked like scores from college games. Their one lonely win took a buzzer beater from kobe to force OT followed by Det choking in OT by scoring just 2 points. Just face it man they needed alot more then what shaq couldve done for em. They were outmatched in every aspect and they layed down like some heartless pussies when they realized they had no chance.

In the 2004 finals the Lakers had only one player shoot over 40% from the field - Shaq who avg 26ppg on 17 fga per in five total games.
In the very next season's ECF the Heat had 6 players shoot over 50% Shaq only avg 20 ppg on 15 fga in 7 total games. Remember Wade didn't play in GM 7 so it should have been Shaq all day l!!!
In 2006 ECF Shaq avg 21 ppg in 6 GMs.
Feeding Shaq less and getting more from other players was the reason Miami pushed it to 7 GMs in '05 and won it in '06..
In three separate series vs Detroit Shaq never dominated and only had two 30 pt games. So, no. Kobe wasn't THE reason the Lakers lost in 2004. He was ONE of many reasons. The Heat had a deeper, more talented, more balanced team with better chemistry both offensively AND defensively. Alonzo Mourning blocked 3 shots a game unlike ANYBODY on that Lakers team including Shaq.. Udonis Haslem outplayed Karl Malone averaging 8 pts to Malone's 4. Eddie Jones and Keyon Dooling were much better than Devin George and Gary Payton and the Pistons had lost Lindsey Hunter, Mehmet Okur and Elden Campbell in the off-season. They did however pick up McDyess.

People don't realize that the Pistons had easily one of the best defenses in the league at the time and limiting opponents to 70 points or less wasn't an uncommon feat. The only team that had a better D was the Spurs...who they took to 7 games the following year. Pretty sure if Larry Brown stayed focused on the team, it could've been two straight championships.

I try not to speak ill of the deceased but you're right about Kobe fans bringing up LeBron losing to the Mavs but not about losing 4-1 against the Pistons (which I remember everyone was saying that it was a huge upset and that it was a "5 game sweep").
Not only that, but there are other inconsistencies with Kobe fans hating on LeBron such as claiming LeBron chokes wile Kobe gave up a 3-1 lead against the Suns and laugh at LeBron losing against the Mavs when those very same Mavericks team swept Kobe's Lakers who won 57 games and won their 2nd championship the year prior.
