I cannot thank you enough for posting this video., My mom Estelle was the founder of Mills Hoagie. She died 29 years ago from cancer. It's amazing how almost everything looks the same. I was age 16 years old cooking the Philly Cheesesteaks on that exact grill. I'm in my 50's now. We were a black family from South Philly that wanted to bring the Philly experience to the Oakland. I appreciate you! 🙏🏾😍

Omg big thank you to you and your mother for bringing Mills Hoagie to Oakland! We love this place! We use to live in Hayward and was here @ least once a week. But now we live in the Valley and I still work in the East Bay so I still pop up there when I can. A couple of times I’ve ordered 2, traveled to the Valley(2hr drive) and the Hoagies still had its taste, consistency etc! They travel well! 🔥

back in the 80s there was a hoagie shop called Estelles. It was in East Oakland by the one mall. Eastmont mall??? Was that your mom???

Hey Bruh, thanks for your honest feedback. Being an Oakland native but living in the East, I see your point. I am a fan of John's Roast Pork, Delassandro's and Max's. Mills is hella good though for a Non-Philly spot!
Roast Pork when cooked right is soooo good. I had some a couple of days ago with Macaroni and Cheese, Collard Greens and a slice of Cornbread.
I worked in Oakland during the plandemic. I loved it so much. The people, the food, the vibe. Everything was completely wonderful. At the time I wanted to move there permanently. People are my thing and they were there in abundance. It was an amazing time in my life. 🌺🌺🌺
Thanks for stopping by Bong JL! It’s the “I came to East Oakland is all I can say” for me lol. I grew up eating Mills Hoagie until about 10 years when I stop eating red meat because of health, but will definitely risk it for Philly Cheesesteak in South Philly tho 💜💜💜
As an Oakland born and Bay Area raised real one, you don't even know how many salutes I have to give you for going to this East Oakland staple. You not from the Town if you dont know Mills hoagies. This the hood spot, it aint all we got.

Living in Philly you will think a steak or hoagie is simple to make until you go out of town

FACTS. I don't understand it bro. I'm down south it's like they don't even try. But what's worse is you have these spots that claim to be from Philly with authentic cheesesteaks fooling the locals that are mediocre at best with jacked up prices
Cheesesteaks/hoagies all taste the same, they not that good in Philly and they not that good anywhere else. The fact that y'all are so proud of cheesesteaks in Philly when they are just a boring ass sandwich is ridiculous lol

I’m originally from Philly, lived in Arizona I tried several pizzerias and restaurants that claim to make Philly cheesesteaks, each one “Nope next!” I’m a cheesesteak snob, I know it and proud of it!😂
I’m trying to get to Philly specifically to do a cheesesteak tasting tour. The places I’ve gathered from my research that are official and worth the trip are D’alessandro’s, Ishkabibble’s, Jim’s, Joe’s and Steve’s. Any place you enjoy In particular or some place that should be on the list that’s missing?

I live in Jerz but been going to Philly my whole life because a lot of my Family is there since migration from the South back in the day. We NEVER leave Philly without one… or two. Philly Cheesesteaks BELONG to Philly!!! They ARE The BEST Cheesesteaks & Hoagies… Philly got that!!!💯💯💯

JL, my old stomping grounds! I lived right up the hill in Maxwell Park and attended Mills College! It’s been 20 years but I remember!
I used to live there East Oakland left in 1981 I am not familiar with this store, if I go back I will surely stop there.
I lived in Maxwell Park area as well I went to Sherman Elementary. The place they just tried we would walk up there every weekend lol.. Mills College is right across the street, brings back memories!!

WoW, I grew up right there. Seminary and McArthur blvd. We used to go to that Hoagie Shop until the shootings started. 😂We always loved the hoagie burger. But man, this brought back memories.

Being from Philly and living in east Oakland most of my life Mills used to be sooo much better.

this shows the indelible impression the italian american immigrant diet thats on the east coast. the fresh baked breads, meats and cheeses. Its a long shot to get that kind of flavor on the west coast. but the asian american immigrants and mexican americans diet got a lock on the market in the west coast.

There are a number of couple of spots in Oakland that uses Amoroso rolls. If JL had gone to them he would I’m sure recognize the rolls.

My sister just came from Sacramento to get her a hoagie from Oakland Mills hoagie. One of the staples in our city that’s still standing. It’s good but nowhere close to a Philly Cheesesteak I’m sure. We are in Cali, so we don’t really know the difference. Made me want one though 👍

There is one place about, 30 miles from Oakland, Jersey Joe's in Cupertino. Fantastic. The best spot outside of Philly/South Jersey I have ever had.

Gotta respect the honesty! My wife n I love this place. And we really don’t have anything good/great to compare it to! May be if we went to Philly and had a Philly Cheese we can size it up against that. There is this place near where we live in Modesto called Fast Eddy’s, which falls completely short Mills.
