This video was extremely helpful with the work I had ahead of me on my also antique 1996 Cabrio. The section about using the gasket material about the gasket was spot on. I also recommend putting some on the connection where the thermostat is because despite a new oring it leaked and I had to remove everything again to do this. Again very informative!

Greetings from Bergvliet. Another great video! The Golf is one of my favourite small cars. In terms of modern Golfs though, I love the Golf 4, Golf 5 and Golf 6, all with the 1.6l petrol engine and manual transmition. I especially love the Golf 4 because I think it's way ahead of it's time in terms of design and solid build and ride quality and modern engines and it also marks the beginning of the modern Golf.
I completely knew how to do this job, but couldn't remember the sizes for the studs and pulley bolts. I need to bring home tools from work, thank you for mentioning the sizes man!

On the MK3 VR6 2.8, UK Golf, September 1997, right hand drive, are there two water pumps? Are they both the same? I need to replace my water pump. I've recently had the coolant hoses replaced, radiator fuel pipes and aircon compressor and related AC pipes, filter etc
Hello, great video everyone would do it after. Would the job be the same cordoba 1.6 1f engine ? Mechanic told me that t-belt must go off, but all look similar to yours .Have old car I would be happy if t-belt dont need to go off.
Hey like your video, im driving jetta mk3 and i have the same problem water pump pully is littel lose, but when im driving i can hear it sound almost like valve lifters is beter to get new wateŕ pump now hey
Thnx for your video! I did this job today. Step by step according to your instructions. However; after refilling the system with 2 litre cooling liquid and starting it up and filling it with a 3th litre, the overflow started working and also some leakage from the flens on top of the engine.. Is it possible I put the multi belt wrong so the water pump doesn't work?? The belt is running smooth. How can I check the water pump? Is it necessary to put an liquid gasket between the plastic flens and the engine? There is already one O ring. I used a little bit of white vaseline. Looking forward to your reply :) Greetings from the Netherlands
Best to use a good quality gasket maker to seal the flange, but it is very important to have a smooth surface on the engine side to bond to, some sandpaper will help to smooth this out. If the system is losing too much coolant from the overflow it may be due to the Reservoir cap that is faulty (opening too soon), it may have to be replaced, Koen Best of luck.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 well my question is can you pull the waterpump off without removing the housing aswell, or do you have to remove them together then put a new pump on the housing?
YES YOU CAN, EARLIER YEARS A COMPLETE HOUSING WAS NEVER AVAILABLE, SO THAT IS HOW WE USED TO DO IT, JUST THE PUMP WAS REPLACED WITHOUT REMOVING THE HOUSING..
Hello there! I know it’s been a while since you’ve made this video. Did you put more gasket sealant on the block itself or just on the coolant pump? Also did you let the gasket sealant “cook off” before your torqued the bolts down or did you just slap on sealant and torque it to spec? I’m struggling with mine as it just keeps leaking so I’m going to try sealant tomorrow 🤞🏾
Hi Kasim, thanks for supporting my channel with your visit, I used sealant on both sides and tightened to spec immediately, as time progresses and the metal ages it seems to pit and the metal surface on the engine block does not seal with just the seals provided in the water pump kit, so one has to help it along with some sealer, good luck with solving your leaking problem.

There are different pumps, best to take along a sample to get the correct one.

Nice instructable. Which engine is that? My 1995 AEX 1400cc petrol was much easier.
Thank you very much

Whats the torque settings for the final 3 bolts of the water pump?
About 25nm will do, Ashraf.
Is it possible to pull just the water pump off without the housing? Then maybe not have to take off as much stuff?
Anyone? Please and thank you
Yes, Josh, one can just replace the pump without the housing as the moving parts which wear is in the pump itself. Gary

Look the coolant used is color red in my country no green may cause damage coolant sensor good golf luck
excellent
Hey............How did you remove the generator belt -_-
Disarm the self-adjusting pulley 1st then you can remove the belt.
