I Put Up A 40 Foot Ridge Beam By Myself!!!

  • I rove 30 miles to get the LVL beam. It took some figuring but we go it in place without any issues. I decided to get out in front of a concern I had with my building permit. I do not want this to come back to get me and I feel it was the right decision.

    Did you have that engineered? That seems incredibly undersized for a vaulted ceiling (maybe that's not what you are doing?). I just installed a 5.5"*15" glulam for a 20' span. It's what the engineer speced.

    • @bobcougar77
      @bobcougar77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BIKEMAN21 I think I misunderstood from a typo in your original reply. You said 10 SF shed, which is like 5'x2'. Yeah, I can see where a 2x8 Might be undersized depending on the width of the shed. If you don't want to reframe there is still a number of things you can do to beef it up. The strongest thing to do is to add joists at the plate, which make the beam irrelevant, but also remove the benefit of a vaulted ceiling. A compromise is to install a series of osb/plywood triangles where your rafters intersect with the beam. Say like 1' tall and 3' wide. Nail em on like a 3" OC pattern to the joists and will add quite a bit of strength without sacrificing much usable space.
      Or do nothing and see how it plays out. It's just a shed afterall. If you start seeing the ridge sag or the walls bow, you'll know you've screwed up :)

      @@bobcougar77 ok i might blow your mind, im planning to also put 2x6 collar ties and 2x4x8 rafter ties. lol what i meant is 10 sq meters which is about 10 ft x 10 ft. i havent got that far yet in the build but that would also serve as a platform for storage and maybe to do chin ups from

    I'm telling you, bro, it's not too smart tackling this project solo. I know you take pride in what you're doing, but it's not good working alone. You could have severely injured yourself, you could have lost your leg when you're taking on a 350 lb beam. You gotta get someone, other than one of your kids, to help you out. You may have been lucky this time around, but what if something more serious happens to you to where you can't free yourself to get help. It could be a super long time before someone comes looking for you and it might be too late.

Working alone and having a 40 foot, 400 pound beam fall on you and pinning your leg and not having anyone there for immediate help doesn't sound too professional to me no matter how good someone is at there job. For me, it sounds more professional to have someone on a job site working with you, especially a job like home construction, for safety reasons.

    Dude, there is NO way that beam is going to carry that roof load as a clear span. Your inspector will not pass this! Your snow load is probably around 40 or 50 pounds per square foot. Your inspector buddy should have told you this. Am I missing something here??

    • @1prespres
      @1prespres 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rafter ties would be required to hold the outside wall from spreading. The collar ties are not adequate to do that. Everything will be fine until you get high winds or heavy snow. The beam must be able to support the entire load.

    People who look for areas where they are not required to get (and pay) for permitting isn't so that they can build shoddily nor unsafely. It is the principles of liberty, being an adult, and being responsible for oneself and not having their hand held like a child by the powers that (shouldn't) be.

    • @brianvendetta4136

      Completely agree, until they sell the house. Codes aren’t meant to baby anyone or make the township money, they are to protect future and current residents from the potential disaster house or the potential disaster contractor waiting around the corner. To be perfectly honest, code enforcement is not meant for good builders. It is to weed out the bad ones; OR it’s a second pair of eyes for the good builders who may have overlooked an important detail while building. Granted, most codes are ridiculous, but that’s when you cross your fingers for a code official who uses discretion when necessary.

    Saves your self some trouble by upgrading before covering framing huh? lol Now youll be ready for 4 way rough in inspection...fun fun. You did excellent framing so inspectors rest easy on the job you do from here on out...generally. Love that veiw!!

    As a student of Architecture, I think your county is a fine middle ground, in that there is conversation between the authority and the builder/home owner yet there is oversight and regulation. Some jurisdictions can have a lack of communication and clarity, some would say too much regulation. In that case, going to the inspector after the build was started would have caused at least tearing it all down and then submitting CDs. I have seen what happens when there are no permits and it is scary to say the least.

    Yes, you're on the 'net for everyone to see. Living space areas are treated wholly different than tool or storage sheds. County codes and inspections really are meaningless. Locally have building inspectors in jail for taking kickbacks letting things slide. I suspect you're going to want some level of insurance coverage to protect this investment? Not trying to be critical, but that is a totally different can of worms..... good luck.

  • @SkilledEddie

    I framed houses for many years that beam was a waste of money because you are not using it as a beam. There is a ridge beam and a ridge board roof framing there are differences. The way you are framing the roof a ridge board is needed not a beam. Also o noticed how much floor opening you cut for your stair well that is too much. You are cutting out.usable floor space that can be utilized for things like a small closet.

    Also don't need 2x12 rafters way overkill especially 16 oc 2x10s are enough for a 20' wide building and what looks like. 6/12 pitch roof. Rafter lengths are only going to be about 12-14' long even 2x8s are code compliant most likely if you are doing 16 oc. All depends on snow load and a few other factors.

    You run a 40' span for the ridge beam, do you have any other supports. I'm am trying to build a 55'x22' home and have a 37' ridge beam run but will need more support coming down to the foundation.

    You can use a 'gin pole' to raise it up.

    So the Ridge beam makes it so you do not need to connect the walls with ceiling ties? Is it possible to add a structural ridge beam to an already built roof in order to remove the ties that are too low?
