Nurse here: pain is your friend in many ways, it will remind you if you are doing too much or if you moved wrong. Listen to the pain! You don't want a back relapse in the middle of this. Praying that doesn't happen. And for all the homesteaders who are rushing before winter sets in. Stay safe.

I built 5 beams 48 ft long - 3-2x12x16s sandwiched with 2 1/2 plywood 8’ long 11” wide , all staggered joints glued and nailed . We were a hell of a lot younger and only had to pick them up 8 ft at a time , weeks apart ! Good move calling the crane , it was worth it no matter what it cost ! Installed in minutes and nobody got hurt !

  • @johntuttle5396

Not to be a scold - but the beam install was frightening. You should never be standing on the very top of any step ladder. I am sure
if you looked down at your feet you would have seen the attached warning label stating, "Do not stand here. This is not a step." There might
even be a similar label on the second step from the top. It is very easy for the ladder to kick out with you taking the express route to
the ground if you stand on the top step(s)! You should be using some form of mobile staging/scaffolding for the "high work". You are too
smart to be taking chances that endanger your safety!
    Scolding complete, carry on!

Yes! After falling off a ladder in Aug. 2018 which caused life-threatening injuries, I have a lot more respect for ladders now! If my neighbors hadn't been home to hear my cries for help, I would have been a goner. I probably could have survived the 7 broken ribs, 4 broken transverse processes, badly broken wrist, slightly punctured lung, and 9 cm laceration in my liver... But if I hadn't been transferred to the #1 trauma care hospital for 5 states which had the expertise to stop the internal bleeding from an artery to my liver, I would have been a goner. You can feel invincible on a ladder until you fall and get hurt; then you learn to respect ladder safety!

No glue with the nails? Its the key component to LVL ( lamination veneer lumber) and Glulam composite beams. extra tight water proof chemical bonding prevents moisture penetration and thus wood movement due to humidity and is the main engineering behind the LVL concept. Nails while they are strong, are just the mechanical fasteners that "clamps" and holds the layers together while the glue cures. Over time nails will rust but the glue doesnt. ????

This is an (over) engineered assembly. Galvanized nails won’t rust especially indoors. No glue is required here.

I beat on a 12 inch concrete step with an 8 pound sledge hammer, for two days! I made some progress but it beat me up, Finally rented a 60 pound electric jack hammer. It took 1 hour, The rental place even gave me some money back! Wished I rented it first, but it's hard to part with your money sometimes ;-)

I see most of the questions and comments are made by people not paying attention! for example the laser level, HELLO. I love what your family is doing although I am not a backseat driver and wont ask if it's raining in a downpour..
