An Alice Pack frame for Preppers Survival and Bushcraft. A cheap and easy job with only a few tools and not that much skill. It does the job and saves money.
The value of this channel is that Nigel isn't constantly trying to sell you items. Do you really need a canteen that cost $100 or more? Useful skills and knowledge provided for free is a great gift, which I for one, appreciate and am grateful for.
I'm kicking myself for not thinking of the plastic bread tray as an option! While I actually have that same ALICE pack on a proper mil aluminum exo - frame, I have been trying to 'brainstorm' a way to create a COMMS pack to carry a mobile rig, antenna and possibly a repeater. Thanks to you I will now be lurking about the bread stores for a find. Great video and genius idea.
As with everyone of your videos they’ve been worthwhile and useful in great detail. I enjoyed them a lot I hope you’re holding up really well against the virus. We’re going on the verge may be another shut down our lockdown. Keep those videos coming they’re well worth the wait. I passed it on thank you
Hi Phillip. Thank you for watching and commenting so favourably. As yet my family has been virus free and I hope yours is too. A few months later I managed to pick up a medium alice with frame, at a good price, so I have used that with both packs. I were to do this again I would double up thre plastic at the point where I drilled the holes for the bottom straps to loop through for a little extra security. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
Hello Nigel, you seem to have gotten the old lightweight tropical frame from Vietnam times, if true, those are pretty rare in Europe. But maybe I just saw a ghost ;-) ATB, Markus p.s. no, looking closely, it could be anything else^^
Hi Markus. Thank you for watching and those kind words. I did geta frame and medium pack later on at a good price and I am really happy with it. Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous and peaceful new year. ATB. Nigel
Hi Ivarr. Thank you for watching and those kind words. If I were to do this again I would double up thre plastic at the point where I drilled the holes for the bottom straps to loop through for a little extra security. Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
very clever idea, ... hope you left the seller a negative. I once made a frame from wood for a turkish army alice pack, and i have seen pvc piping used.
Hi Neil. Thank you for those kind words. " A dollar saved is a dollar earned" Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous and peaceful new year. ATB. Nigel
Very ingenious! My only issue is, will it be as waterproof now, I thought washing waterproof items in detergent was a big no no, I thought you should use soft soap if anything.
Hi Mat. Thank you for watcing and commenting. I don't know how waterproof this item will be, but I am hoping it will be water resistant at the very least. I always use a dry bag as an inner and usually carry a waterproof pack cover. The pack itself was really dirty and the waterproofing on the lid was wrecked anywway. I hope this helps to explain things. Stay safe. ATB. NIgel
It's a Alice pack. It's not water proof. It's resistant. A liner is a necessity to keep what's inside dry. I.e. a garbage bag, 3 mil worked great back in my USMC days.
I re-read my comment, I should have clarified, using detergent to wash anything that is either waterproof or water resistant (which is perhaps the more critical of the two) is a bad idea because detergent breaks the surface tension of water- maybe as a child in science class you did the thing where you float a needle on water, then, after introducing detergent, the needle sinks. This is because the water has a surface tension, a “skin” if you like, the detergent breaks the skin and the needle sinks. This is the same mechanism that messes with a material’s water resistance. One the detergent breaks the tension, the water is able to penetrate to a far greater degree. This is why one should use soft soap or a specialised product for washing anything of that nature, whether it is water resistant or “waterproof” (as in Gortex and similar products. If it is a waterproof such as the old school products that don’t breathe, I don’t think it is as much, if any of an issue.
@@Mat-kr1nf science of it sounds good. But they put drain holes in that bag for a reason. Lol I've had mine for many many years, scrub brush and dawn dish soap. Almost 40 years later still works like when I bought it used.
Excellent. Improvise adapt, overcome.

Such a simple and amazing idea.. SUPER WELL DONE OLD PAL! Im currently at war with a frame idea. You may have given me the ammo to win that war!

@@loriekaczmarek9788Of course they do, military packs can get submerged in use. 🤷🏻♂️
