Quick & easy repair to your old ALICE pack lid

  • Recently I posted a very extensive video about the medium and large ALICE pack system. During that video I covered how on many of the ALICE packs on the surplus market their top rubberized lids are deteriorating due to age. After posting that video a few of my viewers commented on a quick and easy method to repair the old lids. After testing the method myself I found that it was %100 legit and is a great DIY easy repair. I was so impressed I decided to try to help get the word out to my fellow war fighters out there! Thanks again to those viewers of mine for providing me with this great idea.
    *Don't forget to check my pinned comment in the comment section for some great ALICE related deals to help you plus up your pack. Thanks for watching!*

      The packs that they have issued since my Army time in the 80s are far superior.

I was on active duty from 1982 - 2004. the only packs that I was issued, or I should say regularly issued, was a large Alice pack. now there was a time in the late 80's when the army gave certain units a Mountain pack. but as a paratrooper those didn't last more than a couple months as they could not be jumped safely.

    Since you have the flex seal, here's a bit of tip from a construction worker. Spray the bottoms and backs of your carry cases (tools, personal belongings, etc). When your stuff moves from vibration or the station it's on is mobile, it'll stick to it a bit more and will have a harder time to run on you while you're busy with your task/project.

I've asked if anyone new how to 'clean up' the sticky residue but never ran across a good solution - until now! They even have 'flex spray paint' now for cloth materials. Thank you for sharing another good use for FlexSeal. I would also like to share an idea I got from another TH-camr: using FlexSeal to apply a thin durable "grip tape" to AR magazines. I have used it on both steel mags and PMAGs and am quite happy with the results. Be sure to mask off enough of the top to ensure the FlexSeal does not rub inside the magazine well and hinder insertion/removal. Also, mask off enough of the bottom to ensure the floorplate can be removed. I have had good results with 3M blue painter's masking tape. If the PMAGs have a round-count window, mask that too. The FlexSeal seems to deaden and quiet down the noise the magazine makes when it hits something (gear, mag well, ground, etc), especially with a couple coats.

    Back in the 80's/90's we would use the dip coating to reseal those lids and other worn pouches. It was sold in pint size cans and used to coat or recoat pliers or small tools used for electrical work. Pretty much the same thing but thicker because it's a non aerosol product.

  • @RangerReject
    @RangerReject 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I use Tool Dip for rubberizing tool handles. It works great on the bottoms of packs and places where you don’t want something like a sharp ski edge to cut the fabric. You can get it in OD and other colors. You can spray it, or thin and paint it on.

    This is a PSA I did this to my Medium Alice pack, make sure to get all the factory rubberized coating off the lid before. My Alice pack had a lid that was just starting to peel and I tried all I could to get it off with about 25% of the lid still covered with the original rubber that wasn't ready to come off. The areas where the rubber was peeled off almost immediately after letting it sit for 24 hours it made it a lot easier to get the remaining old rubber off but you'll have to re apply to cover the areas that peeled off. Otherwise great solution.

      Thanks brother. Yup that's what I usually did as well. WP bag inside and if it starts raining heavy I wrap the pack in a poncho. I'll still do that but its nice to have this water proof lid in tact for those light and medium rains.

    This technique works great. I finally got around to repairing one of my packs with zero waterproof material left. I used rustoleum spray rubber. A little talc added after everything dries keeps the rubber or paint from sticking.

    Great product for this I also have done an acu rain coat the same way, it turned out perfectly,was a little stiff but it does repel water great. Thanks for the video.

    Good advice. On my Alice the coating turned to a powder. I cleaned it and used Flex seal clear color. It works great and I did not need to paint after application. The original OD green looked great. Did two coats. 👍🏻👍🏻

    I did this to interiors of a 1956 and 67 buttpacks. Certainly made pack much stiffer. I was not looking for waterproof, just water resistant. I have been pleased so far.

    My two ALICE packs I have from 1982-1993 USMC are far superior than the cammo ALICE pack I was issued in the Army in 2000 or so.
    Both USMC tops are still mint and need no attention.
    My Army issued cammo one the top liner is basically powder and getting all over everything.
    Gonna give it a good wash and then use the flex seal to seal it.
    Great tip

    Hello from BC Canada. Great Channel love the camouflage tests. Old thread I know but here I go anyways. Tried this product on my maps and works well for moisture control. Keeps my maps from "rotting" in wet weather. Just use multiple light coats.

    Nice. Watching this I was thinking about painting the OD green first then clear Flex Seal over the top of that. I read the comment about green Flex Seal and nobody in my part of Texas sells it.

      @Brent0331  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I didn't see it at Lowes either. Maybe I over looked it but either way I don't think they have the same OD green color, I think its a bright green.

    Just picked up a 1988 woodland camo Alice pack for my collection. Surprisingly it's the first pack I'll need to try the flex seal trick to. I have several packs now, somehow they keep finding me! Would be cool if flex seal made a OD green. That would be awesome.

    I’m a photographer I have very expensive backpacks but as with most packs taking off the pack and laying it down tends to wear the fabric on the bottom or if you have it set down and it’s raining and the ground is wet it tends to soak through this may be a preemptive strike to prep my gear for longer lasting waterproofing thanks for the idea

      Yup, I know there are a couple videos out there of guys doing that to other packs of theirs. I'm sure it works. I would try to keep the drain holes in tact though at the bottom so water can escape.
