    A review of Leifkicker 3D hex tiles for use with Settlers of Catan. Settlers of Catan is one of the most beloved and widely enjoyed games out there. It’s heavily played by casual to advanced tabletop gamer alike. In fact, many of my more hardcore gamer friends have said to me over the years that they love using Catan as a gateway drug of sorts for their casual friends, leading them away from the mediocrity of milton bradley and parker brothers, and into the world of real tabletop board gaming.
    Also, there’s something to be said for a game that is challenging, socially engaging, and just all around fun.
    Leifkicker Studios, maker of the excellent deck boxes for Magic the gathering, also offers a line of 3D hex terrain tiles for use with Catan. Each unique tile in this set is hand cast polyurethane resin that is hand paint and protected with several clear coats, so unlike cardboard, these tiles are durable enough to ensure many years or even generations of play.
    If you already love the game Catan will you really be interested in this handmade set?
    Before I continue, I must point out: Although these 3D terrain titles are obviously modeled after catan, you can’t actually play catan without owning the catan board game. The roads, settlements and other components, all the resource and gameplay cards are needed and you can only get these by buying and owning Settlers of catan. These 3d terrain tiles are just a way to create a more fun and flashy experience for your and your family or gaming group.
    So what about these pieces? In terms of construction, each piece is heavy and solid feeling, and they thankfully don’t slide around on the table as much as the cardboard does. Also, if you spill your drink on these, you haven’t ruined your game, forcing you to buy a new one at Target and then put the ruined one in the box and return it.
    Which is something I just made up right now and didn’t really happen. Come on, I….cough
    The Vibrant colors that have been hand painted on to each piece are simply sublime. Also, it took me a moment to realize this, but no two tiles are alike and are each hand cast from a unique original. This means your island of catan is unique across all its hexagonal territory. The amazing immersion this creates is something else entirely.
    Each piece has a discreet flat space sculpted into it for the numbered discs game pieces into this set. This is such a great advantage over using random mini or even some other custom catan tile sets as these work with the catan components.
    Each piece is also cast of colored resign, meaning if paint scratches off, it is significantly less visible because the tile itself it the color of the resource.
    Also, each piece is sculpted to the official hexagonal size, meaning you can integrate these with other settlers of catan sets and set pieces.

    Those are nice and the price isn't bad either. My only gripe would be the MDF. It's not the most durable of the processed woods. It can be damaged easily and isn't too fond of moisture. It's still an exceptional accessory for an exceptional game.

      It is an overhyped ressource collecting game.

    • @arenkai
      @arenkai 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's a simple ressource gathering board game. You throw dice and the number you get decides what tiles produce resources. Minimal strategy needed, maximum fun for all the family.
      I play with my parents who have 0 knowledge in games whatsoever and they have a blast !
      It's far from the best board game out there but it's really good at what it does.

      deeper in your pocket, you mean right?

    • @firekram
      @firekram 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I mean is that the expansions do have more for the hard core players, who were already going to spend 80 bucks on a board game, you can get the base and (cities and knights) and enough should be going on that for you to enjoy. (without leaving your casual friends behind)

    @laurencebrown3822 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I had known about these a few years ago when me and my friends played this weekly, I'd have probably proposed that we all pitch in to get a set. The heavy usage has really scuffed the tiles we have, and the borders need objects placed on them to not only prevent sliding around from an accidental bump, but also from some slight warping. Paying upwards of $400 would be prohibitive to us singly, but bringing that down to $60 or so per person who regularly plays seems like a wise investment if the game is a regular fixture for the group.

    What's the volcano-esque tile with the tiny parts of all the resources on it? The set appears to have the correct numbers of all the other tiles. Is it a spare, or is there some supplemental rule for a wild tile?

    • @epicseconds8348

    "The only downside to this is that it isn't free." Not really, there's no effective way to randomize the 3D tiles, so you still need to use the original tiles for that, which also adds time to set-up.

    As a MTG casual player i mostly look for stand alone card games that can provide fun with friends without needing everyone to buy their own decks.
    I really recommend you try and review the games made by White Wizard Studios.
    Star Realms, Hero Realms, and specially, their own take on drafting fantasy: Epic Card Game.
    All ready to play sets are on 20$ with expansions to the base games.
    Among those (since i love Sci Fi and deck building) Star Realms is my favorite, and the digital Version is great too. Available for download on android os Ios devices for free with a price only for multiplayer and the same rules as the physical game.

    I don't suppose you could review Ascension? The popular deck-building game was designed by a Pro Tour player, and is into its seventh major expansion.

    A bit rich for my blood, but definitely a cool product. Might be an interesting DIY project to make and paint a set from other materials... or make a classy-looking wood inlay set.

    Good stuff Prof. I wouldn't mind investing is this someday if Catan sees more play in my home.
    I'm a huge fan of the simple, fun game of Star Realms. Any chance of that being reviewed? Colony Wars maybe?

    Next time you do a deckbox review, do the ones from etsy. I got a leather deck box from a seller (3 actually) and its my go to deck box

    I'd love to hear your thoughts on the game Android: Netrunner, especially with the new core set coming out soon, and games like the Mage Knight Board Game and Great Western Trail.

    They’re beautiful tiles and if I wasn’t a college student who doesn’t even have her own copy of catan, I’d probably at least consider getting them.

    I have a request for a commander/EDH deck in MTG. Would it be possible to do a guide on a Nylea, God of the Hunt? I have a copy of it and wanted to make a commander deck around it.

    Great video, Professor! Here are some games that I'd love you to review -- Power Grid, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Dominion (2nd. Ed), Android: Netrunner, The Legend of the Five Rings Card Game, Twilight Imperium, Champions of Midgard (Very similar to Waterdeep, so interested in getting your opinion).

      Among those i really support The Legend of the Five Rings, great game with a beaultiful art style (and i love asian thematics).
      Dominion on the other hand (even tough still really good) have given rise to other cool deck building games, like Star Realms or Miskatonic School for Girls.
