DIY Settlers of Catan Board made with Lasers and Resin

  • We play a lot of games in this house. One board game that is played way more than the others is Settlers of Catan. During out last play though, I really was motivated to finally make my own version of it. This is what I can up with. All pieces are multilayered wood with resin inlays. They are magnetized so I can hang this like art on the wall when it’s not in use. The cards are made from blank playing cards and Cricut cut Vinyl. The card holder is a modified file from a box generator for a tray layout - www.festi.info... .
    The board took me over a month to complete and I am super happy with it!

    This is really great. I have a couple of Glowforges, and I've struggled with the requisite Catan Board and the lengthy engrave that many of the pieces have required. I'm just getting into resin, so this honestly looks like the ideal project to take on. I also really like all of your other projects. Fantastic job!

    • @WhenGeeksCraft
      @WhenGeeksCraft  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!!! I always try to look for ways. I can cut instead of engrave because it just saves so much time lol

  • @ChillyCucumber
    @ChillyCucumber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My family made a custom Catan board by purchasing some wooden templates, painting the tiles, and then putting some finisher on top and using the brush to texture the finisher and make it stick up more in certain patterns based on the tile.
    Not as cool as this, but it was still fairly cool.

    @G33v3s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Love this!!
    I have a few (slightly random) questions:
    1 is there a technique to using pipettes with resin? I can’t get enough suction to get a nice slurp?
    2 are there 2 player rules for Catan? Or was that just for the video?
    3 how long did you spend making resource cards? Those look amazing but I don’t think I would have had the patience.
    4 does a glowforge tube move with the gantry?
    5 how the heck was I not subscribed before now? I should rectify that!

    • @WhenGeeksCraft
      @WhenGeeksCraft  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1. Warm resin is runnier. If you look you can see that I also let them fill as I use another color. I typically do that because they fill slowly lol.
      2. We have a homebrew/modified two player. Basically requires more points to win to make it not go by so quickly and that trading is encouraging more early in the game.
      3. For....ev....er. the weeding took over an hour per resource cut time was about 35 minutes per sheet and the transferring was ANNOYING. Next board game I will order the cards from a vendor with a custom design.
      4. Yea!! It's on the gantry and just kinda weasels around with the laser head lol
      5. I don't have an answer for that but I'm glad you fixed it!

      @@WhenGeeksCraft ... totally understandable - but ... is it possible to get the layouts so someone can send them to a cutter service (I will not buy such a machine, I think) and can make his way from there?
      I absolutely love what you did there - I want to make one for myself but more like a minature and more woodworking. But after seeing this I think it is combiningable (sorry for my english - I am from germany ;-) )
      GREAT job, really great job there!

      We have all our files on patreon. I have had patreon members order these our stuff a laser cutting service multiple times. I would recommend doing that

    Are the cards standard playing card size? I recommend sleeves to protect them and keep them clean.

      Yup! they are just plain playing cards. Sleeves seem like over kill lol i honestly may get this card set printed because I wasnt SOLD on the vinyl. They looks really nice for now though.

      @@WhenGeeksCraft fair enough. Take it from a magic player tho, sleeves go a long way to keeping them clean

      im not to fond of the cards now that i have had them for a while. i would like to order custom cards printed to be honest. the board still is the best though

      @@WhenGeeksCraft Y si en lugar de cartas usas fichas estilo poker de madera con los iconos serigrafiados al calor? Quedarían increíbles!

    • @WhenGeeksCraft
      @WhenGeeksCraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is definitely an option. I was drawn towards cards mainly because you dont want the other players to know whats in your deck. Chips sound cool but they take up more space and would be hard to hold on to.
