I've wanted to make this video for a long time, and I hope you enjoyed it, even though it was not Magic: The Gathering.
While I would love to SOMETIMES talk about board games and other nerdy things in the future, I do want to emphasize that this channel is primarily a Magic: The Gathering channel, and that videos like this are fun little treats that I may do from time to time.

Tolarian Community College As one of your bosses, man you've got a lot of us now, I approve of this video and future non MTG videos as well. I like board games as well as MTG so reviews for other game products helps me just as much as MTG. And this video really captured how confusing I felt when I played Star Trek Catan at Origins last year. So many better Cantan Variants.

If you want a Sci-Fi themed Catan game, I would recommend the spinoff game Starfarers of Catan. The aesthetic design is overall better and there are so much more new mechanics not found in the original game! Seriously I think you should play Starfarers of Catan and see how it compares to Star Trek Catan. It's not officially Star Trek but I sure enjoyed it!
Edit: In this game, you actually MOVE SHIPS to places instead of building "ship chains".

I'm with you on this one, Professor. FOOD? SERIOUSLY?

What this game does evoke is the image of the Enterprise carefully synchronizing its orbit around a gigantic yellow planet, to dock with a space station shaped like two giant golden arches. Everyone on the crew pools together their orders and spare change, and they send an away team to pick up the hamburgers.
And then a red shirt dies of food poisoning.

This is hands down my favourite version of Catan. Little tweaks make all the difference.

    • @Taalanos
      @Taalanos 9 ปีที่แล้ว

You missed the changes in it.
Board set up is different, the amount of city and towns are different and how you can level them up, as well as the obvious 'hero cards' (support cards)
It's the combination of the 3 that lead to more rounded games.

Ohh! Very interesting, I like the diversifying into board games. I mean, there is a limit to how many MTG expansions and products you can review each month.
But board games are many, varied and sadly often not worth the price. If The Professor is going to continue helping us geeks choose quality merchandise outside card games, I'm all for it!

Thank you for this video professor. If you are looking for a space exploration themed board/card game I was wondering if you have ever tried the game: Eminent Domain? It captures the feel of surveying for new planets to explore. Then you decide to go the peaceful route and colonize or the not peaceful war route of conquering the planet. Once you have attained (either colonized or conquered) the planet you surveyed you can then build up a research engine or interstellar sort of marketplace to score victory points. In the end each planet you colonize or conquer scores you a set number of victory points to go with your research and marketplace vistory points you can earn. Whomever scores the most victory points wins.
It scratches the itch for me of a space themed exploration game and is also fun for me pesonally as I enjoy deck builder games that have a small board game component to them. If you are looking for a game like this then I would recommend checking it out and if enjoying it - to give the expansion a try. Grade from me A-. The small detraction comes in the fact that the original game does not (or did not when I first played it) automatically come with a some small subset of planet cards known as "Prestige planets" which are highly point driven and have little to no usefulness in terms of the planet contributing to a marketplace nor aiding your research. Had it automatically come with them (I recommend them) then the game would be a solid A.
I would happily watch a review of your take on Eminent Domain should it be of some interest to you. Thank you for all your hard work on your channel. I find this and all your videos to be very valuable!
    Thank you!

This was a great video branching out from your TH-cam roots as a Magic: The Gathering channel, Tolarian Community College. I found it insightful and your presentation of the product in this case, "Star Trek Catan" to be grade A material. I look forward to seeing more reviews of games in your collection. I'd be willing to send you a copy of a Milton-Bradley attempt at a classic TSR style board game that I have for review with a self-addressed label for return shipping and be willing to provide communication for its return and money for its return. The game in question is "Hero Quest".

Oh heck yes, more videos like this PLEASE!
I have Star Trek Catan. I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. My wife isn't fond of Catan, and we live an annoying distance from friends, so having four people together doesn't come up often. After watching this, I'm glad it was a gift.
There are so many locations they could have used. Triskelion? The Mutara Nebula? Dammit, Mayfair Games, give me a reason to say "What does god need with a starship?". You've got 79 episodes of TOS, 22 episodes of TAS, and six freaking feature films! That's TONS of content, even if you didn't want to delve into the novels and comics, or Next Generation and beyond.
Dilithium is also traditionally shown as being pink or purple! Not a canister of green glowing stuff that you'd think would somehow turn a bunch of turtles into teenage ninjas?
Cut Janice Rand some slack though! The poor gal just passed away.
The Monopoly card certainly doesn't fit into the TOS/TAS universe. Maybe the Star Trek Online universe, where the Ferengi have joined the Federation...

While I'd like to see MOSTLY MTG, I was also not disappointed to see this in my feed. I think your review style lends itself well to coverage of games as a whole...and you've built up a good deal of credibility from your reviews of products by actually broadcasting the testing just as much as the actual review.
I think you could probably do a review of a game every 4th to 5th video without really disappointing anyone.

An idea for the starship-road thingy - How about having connecting wave or pulse-looking reflective plastic pieces as something to mark a track, with the Starship at the front. This could symbolize contact established between a base and ship, and they can't be crossed by other ships because signals can get jammed or result in system failure of one sort or another. I know almost nothing of Star Trek, so it probably sounds dumb but I think even that would have been cooler than "line up these ships".

Slam-Dunk Cosmos I'd rather a system more like in Eclipse which simulates exploring unknown territory. Eclipse captures the feel of expanding into new territory, discovering new planets, star systems, etc.

Oh nuts, he is doing Board Games now that is so great thank you. I love playing all games but it is so hard to get people to play or really do anything with me at times I don't know why but sometimes it makes me think that everybody hates me or something. Too bad this really doesn't do anything with Catan except give it a little Star Trek flair and by that I mean a little flair.
Last thing I really liked how you popped in more and made both points and jokes.

Wish I had seen this before I bought Star Trek Catan. My family played once, was extremely disappointed in the experience, and it has lived on the game shelf, undisturbed, since then. On a more positive note, we bought it at Gen Con, and it was really fun to see Wil Wheaton unfairly/appropriately win the tournament that was played with oversized pieces.

I work at my local game store and I always use star trek catan as an exemple to point out the difference between typical Europian games and American Games.
American games deliver on flavor, a nice glossy board, beautiful art work, a greath theme and often (not always!) compansade by not putting enough resorces in delivering good rules.
European games deliver a very tactical challenge, and are often games baced on resorce management, they do however fail on delivering a good theme, and most games end up being about medieval farmers. For instance, Catan, one of the most well known European style games, is able to throw out there intire medieval theme and replace it with star trek, with out changing anything rules wise.
For the last 15 years or so, you see greath Europian style games from the states, like Dominion or Ticket to Ride. Or very flavorfull American style games from Europe.
