My husband and I used to watch this every year before Thanksgiving. He died last year so this was a bittersweet memory, but I’m glad you two seemed to enjoy it as much as we did. Be thankful for each other (I know you are).

@Rob Squad, did not understand how much heart and pathos this film had til I saw it as an adult.... the comedy is gold then it is gold now what makes this movie so amazing to me is it's heart.... fun to see you all fall in love with this classic.
As someone who traveled extensively, there is so much truth in this movie. Although it's exaggerated in this movie, we all meet people like Dell, and sometimes we might actually be Dell. The wistful smile by Dell at the end showed both the happiness and pain he felt at that moment. Damn, I miss John Candy!
I got to meet him once by his home in Canada, and I think he, and Robin Williams, and Tom Hanks are my favorite comedic actors of all time.

IS it that cut throat? My worst was in NYc, hailing a cab in pouring down rain, I was in my early 20s, and these Wall St. guys took the cab that stopped for me! They literally got ahead and I wound up on the train with a huge heavy box. There were real 'moments' back then!!! But usually it was ok, with little bits of humanity thrown in. THANK YOU!

John Candy left us way too soon. May he rest in peace. His real-life personality was like the character in this movie. No one ever said a bad word about him. He was the genuine, real article. Also, a side note: the book he was reading while waiting in the airport, "Canadian Mounted" is a reference to the fact that John Candy was Canadian. Another movie of his that I highly recommend is "Cool Runnings".

My personal favourate of his movies was "Great Outdoors". My dad loved those raccoons, and was always watching that movie.
Remember when Ryan Reynolds' character was reading "Canadian Mounted" in Deadpool? That was his hilarious little homage to fellow Canadian John Candy.

There were so many scenes that were cut. One of them was Steve Martin's favorite scene with Candy and he still has a hard time talking about it. After Neil goes back to the train station and Dell explains that his wife has been dead, they go to a diner together. That's when Dell explains why he's the way he is and why he travels with the trunk. And inside the trunk was supposed to be all of his wife's belongings. The scene was extremely emotional and Steve Martin said he believes John Candy gave his best performance in that scene. A shame it ended up cut :(
That should gave been included in the movie, or at least in a director's cut version
Another story line that didn't make it into the final cut was that Neil's wife thought he was having an affair and that the whole story about his trip back was a ruse so that he could be with his mistress. That's why Neil's wife had the expression she did when she saw Dale was real.

The part where you find out Del is a widower is so well done. The clues are there throughout the movie but almost no one sees it coming and the reveal completely turns the film from a slapstick comedy to one with a heart and then when you remember it's a John Hughes film and it all makes sense.
it's no 6th sense but it was well done
THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS!!!! One of the funniest lines of all time! I also loved the little cameo by the legendary Kevin Bacon ("Footloose") as the guy who raced Steve for the taxi at the beginning.
I miss John Hughes so damn much. His films (especially this and The Breakfast Club) are the only ones I'd LOVE to see sequels to, because I've always wondered what those characters we're doing years later.
Also, the most underrated and hilarious moment of the film to me is when Neal recognizes Del in the airport and he "remembers" him making that stupid, deer in the headlights face (that he didn't even make in the scene originally lol)

If you want more Steve Martin, 'Only Murders in the Building' is pretty good.

Such a great film. It grows in stature as you get older. I loved it as a young teen when I first saw it, just for all the funny bits. Now in middle age, I'm genuinely in tears at the end. Remember this, and share it with your kids when they are old enough, for there's some great lessons to be learned here. I think this is John Hughes' best work.

The original cut of this movie was over FOUR HOURS long! In case it may have seemed weird why Neil’s wife seemed overly emotional at the end, there was originally a bit more story surrounding her suspecting that Neil was having an affair. When she finally meets Del in the end, she realizes that Neil was being honest all along and she’s clearly overcome with relief over it. It’s really a shame that it got cut because it makes the ending hit that much harder. Regardless, I think this movie is a masterpiece. John Hughes is unequivocally my favorite filmmaker; he really was the king of his era.
The perfect thanksgiving movie and probably John Candy's best. A comedy with real heart. Great choice guys!

It never seems to occur to people that Del doesn't need to be on this trip at ALL. He's just looking for companionship and looking to help.
This movie always gets to me: the humor and the heartache. I love the "odd-couple" scenario and these two played their roles beautifully. In his earlier years, Steve Martin was the "wild crazy guy", but in later years he started playing the straight man (with sprinklings of momentary madness!) He portrays frustration and anguish so well. John Candy is so lovable in this too. One of my favorite movies Steve Martin was in is "Parenthood" - with Keanu Reeves, Joaquin Phoenix (he called himself Leaf Phoenix back then) and Rick Moranis. Another great movie with an odd-couple theme is "Midnight Run" - with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. (So hilarious!) It's so much fun watching with you guys!

The most amazing thing about john candy was his father died young from a hereditary condition and john also suffered from the same thing and knew he was going to die young but yet look how much joy he brought the world and what wonderful uplifting soul he was

I love watching movies with you guys! That odd looking machine at the hotel was the way we did credit card transactions back in the day, carbon paper and the whole bit. I admit I laughed at how bewildered you both were
I worked in retail at the time this movie came out, and we had the electronic credit card machines. But mom & pop places like that motel were still using carbon paper probably into the 90's. I didn't miss those carbon paper contraptions -- at least the electronic readers would immediately tell us if the card was fraudulent or cancelled.

I'm always amazed how one can sit through a hilarious disaster-filled road movie, laughing out loud countless times, and get hit in the feels with genuine emotion at the end. It wasn't a kind of fake-out trick to make you cry, it was genuinely earned emotion. (And has me wiping away tears every single time.) Major testament to the writing, directing, and fantastic acting.

John Candy and Tom Hanks played brothers in 1984's "Splash"--that was Hanks' breakout movie and should definitely be on your list of films.
As a Chicagoan this movie was one of the ones that defined growing up there in the late 80s early 90s…not just their depiction of Neil and his family bring the prototypical middle class Chicago family but having the movie be a part of your family tradition. Watching it every thanksgiving. Similar to Home Alone and the Chevy chase Vacation franchise. John Hughes had that era in Chicago nailed.
After missing two years of being with my family on Thanksgiving because of COVID and battling cancer, this movie actually has new meaning for me. The battle to get home for Thanksgiving and being with the family seems well worth it! Inviting someone to have Thanksgiving dinner has also been part of my life. When I was in grad school, I invited several of my fellow students to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner when they were too far away to make it home. A few more people to enjoy some laughs and a warm dinner was never a big deal for my family.

This has been a longtime favorite. John Candy's acting was so good in the scene where Neal is first yelling at him. And the entire night driving scene makes me laugh so hard every time.
This is such a great John Hughes classic that has you laughing all the way through, but then makes you absolutely heartbroken for one sad minute at the end. John Candy ( RIP) was such a fun actor that left us too soon. Steve Martin is great,too

I love that you don't recognize the manual card reader! You young'uns!. It's the reason the writing on your credit card is raised - you put the card on the plate, lay the credit slip with the transaction details on it across the top, slide the slider, bang-bang, left and right, and the carbon paper transfers the writing from the card to the slip and you sign it. You come home from a business trip with a pocket full of slips. Those were the days.
They both have a bunch of great movies, my favorite for Steve is " Parenthood", and for John " Cool Runnings" which is a great underdog movie like Rocky, based on a true story!!

Parenthood is one of my all-time favorite movies. I could watch it everyday and not get tired of it. It's just so real, and what an amazing cast!!
In 1984 I was working at the Hilton Hotel on St. Pete Beach and the cast of "Summer Rental" was staying with us during the filming of the movie. I delivered room service meals to the entire cast. John Candy started a diet ordering salads but he cracked after the first week and went back to steaks for dinner. Nice guy and generous tipper. Always in character, because he was the character and the character was him. A very funny man who left us too soon. RIP John Candy and thanks for the laughs.

@@RoGueNavy - agreed. Carl Reiner directed "Summer Rental" and always seemed irritable. The cast told me he was on a tight schedule and concerned about exceeding the budget, etc. So that movie was filmed in a hurry. The cast was not happy with him. "Armed and Dangerous" was another John Candy gem.

My best friend always cries at the end. I must admit I tear up myself. My friend and I got to walk down that street and approach the house. I am from Chicago, and it was my friend and his wife's first time in Chicago, My wife and I gave them a tour of some of the homes used in John Hughes movies. I surprised him by playing the theme song from the movie just before I parked the car. Then we walked down that street toward the house just like in the movie ending. He was a little verklempt. Great movie and reaction. Thank you.
I'm glad that you both are watching and reacting to this absolutely dynamite film! I have just seen this two days ago and it was still just as funny and touching as when I had first seen it. Both Steve Martin and John Candy play well off of each other. Speaking of the great John Candy, you both should do a reaction video to "Only The Lonely" which along with this film is two of his best work in my humble opinion!

This is the perfect Thanksgiving movie, because not only is it relatable, it teaches people to be thankful for what they have. And no matter what life throws at you, learn to take it in stride, go with the flow, and be appreciative for the life you have even when things are at their worst. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!
One of my favorite lines from the movie is when John Candy says to Steve Martin "I like me" that is so important nowadays people don't realize. You have to like who you are, otherwise change.
That scene is so important!
I always felt that sense of relief by the wife at the end seemed a but overdone, so I looked into it, and it turns out there was a subplot that was cut out where she thought Neal was having an affair, which is why he didn't make it home for Thanksgiving. So when she saw Del she realized it wasn't an affair, hence the sense of relief in when she said "Hello, Mr. Griffith." 🥰

John Candy was SO well loved, especially here in Canada, that seeing the hurt in his eyes in that scene was painful. It's like "Do anything, but do not hurt that man!"

Hope they re-instate the subplot they removed in editing. There's an added poignancy to the final scene when you know that it was scripted and filmed with Neals wife believing that he was having an affair and all the incidents were lies to cover up him spending time with the other woman. It's not until she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" that she realises it was all true and she had nothing to fear all along.
I'm looking to seeing this reaction from you both.

I would recommend you watch 'Cool Runnings' with John Candy. A very funny movie with a heart warming story.
'Housesitter' is a great Steve Martin movie with Goldie Hawn l.

At 7:55, the machine that led to the "What is that?" question is how credit cards were handled before we had machines that tied back to the internet or credit card companies. The card was laid down, a slip of paper is laid on top, usually with the cost info (receipt), and the part that runs back and forth would press the paper against the card and the raised numbers and names on the cards would appear on the paper (whether ink or carbon or similar).
Credit cards are simple today, as they deal with things instantly via electronics. Before, there were tons of slips of paper that had to be processed, and there was some delay.

The end of this movie still brings tears to my eyes.
Suggestion: do like a lot of us do, and make this film part of your yearly Thanksgiving viewings.

Amber and Jay, what a great reaction to a great movie! Steve Martin and John Candy have such great chemistry in this film and it's one of my favorites. Many in the comments have already suggested great movies to watch that Candy and Martin have starred in. May I suggest a couple movies they have starred in that are hilarious but not very well known: "All of Me" with Steve Martin which also co-stars the great Lily Tomlin (Those two have great chemistry in this). Unfortunately this film is never played anymore. John Candy also starred in another funny film "Who's Harry Crumb?". For more great road trip movies I would highly suggest "Midnight Run" with Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin which is one of the best action comedy movies and the first movie that really showed DeNiro in a comedic role. This one is a must see. Thanks guys for everything you do. I love your channel😀
Brilliant actors and comedians, both. Seeing them together throughout an amazing film was and is a blessing.
One of the real sad parts is what didn’t happen but can easily be known: has Neil not realized and gone back for Del, Del would have, yet again, spent a special occasion all alone and lost and sad….

Our family watches this almost every Thanksgiving. I just love John Candy. Last year we had a lifelong friend (we grew up on the same block) of the family that came to Thanksgiving. He's older, not much money, no transportation and his own family wouldn't drive 20 minutes to pick him up. So, my brother drove down to pick him up and brought him to our family Thanksgiving. We all had a very nice time.
My dad and I absolutely love this movie, we've watched it together every year for over 30 years. Undoubtedly Steve Martin & John Candy's finest performances!

Yes! One of my favorite movies. It's so funny and brings all the feels. John Candy and Steve Martin directed by John Hughes. It's perfect in every way. The character development is so good, how they are so different, but in the end becomes friends. Happy thanksgiving guys

I'm a ex-retail worker from back in the day.The apparatus you we're confused about was how we used to imprint the credit card info onto the three layered (at that time) sales tickets. You would put the credit card in the apparatus than put in the sales ticket on top of the credit card (one layer had a ink sheet attached to the ticket). There was another part of the apparatus that you would then take your hand and physically move it over both the ticket and the credit card and it would imprint the card details onto the sales ticket. Then the sales ticket would go into the cash register so you can start the transaction, if I remember the process correctly. Yep, compared to today it was a lot to go through when all you have to do now is tap your card on the computer box...lol!😁🙂

There are not a lot of Thanksgiving movies, but I try to watch this movie each year. And, now that John Candy's passed away, the movie is even more poignant. Your reaction was wonderful. 🦃🧡🥰

I love this movie so much! It's a definite must-watch for me during the Thanksgiving holiday. The comedic genius' of Steve Martin and the late great John Candy is perfection.
I very highly recommend the 1988 movie "The Great Outdoors".

If you notice Neil's wife is very concerned. Thinking he's possibly cheating on her. The was part of the storyline that was originally in the script, but was cut out due to the length of the original script. That's why at the end she is relieved that Dell is a real person and not someone that Neil made up. Interesting, huh?
Film Fact: This film was loosely based on John Hughes's travel experience from New York City to Chicago which took him about 5 days to get home. I've read somewhere that a remake of this film is supposed to happen with both Will Smith and Kevin Hart attached to it. No one else can touch this film.
It won't get greenlit with Will Smith in it. His projects have all fallen through since he went nuts at the Oscar's on Chris Rock.

Steve Martin stated in a interview he has trouble watching the end of the movie ever since John Candy died.
While never the handsome or leading man in Hollywood, very few people were loved as much as Candy. He could play an excellent kid movie or pull it off in a movie like this.
I saw a 'behind-the-scenes' documentary on the making of this thing last year. I think they said John Candy gave them even more material that had to be chopped out for time. Otherwise the movie would have come in at over 3 hours long. I remember one of my favorite lines, was him saying something about playing 'pickup sticks' with their butt cheeks.
There was actually a 3 hour cut of the film but sadly all the footage was lost except one extended scene on the airplane. Such a shame.
One of the funniest movies ever, IMO. "How would he know where we are going? "

7:56 Back in the day they didn't have electronic card readers .. they would 'swipe' the card with a carbon paper and you'd sign the copy.

One of my favorite comedy’s of all time. Maybe it’s just me put I’d put this right up there with Ferris Buellers Day Off. Just a terrific all around film. Another Steve Martin classic is “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, a terrific film.
LOL. I just rewatched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels last week. I'd forgotten how hilarious he is in that movie! One worth watching, to be sure. :)
I love the whole "F**k" scene after Steve Martin loses it at the ticket counter! Also, one of the best endings. Just like "Uncle Buck", John Candy's laugh and smile is so wonderfully contagious. He always gets you in the heart. FYI...if my memory serves correct, John Hughes (writer/director) had had a really bad traveling experience that kind of jump-started the idea for this movie. I think even while finishing up "Ferris Bueller" he asked the woman who played the secretary in the school to be the annoying ticket agent in this film. I do like how Martin and Candy make good comedic characters, but still capable enough as actors to give them the humanity required to make the story truly touching. Excellent work.
What a classic. John Candy and Steve Martin are the epitome of an odd couple. Their chemistry is off the charts. They actually became very close friends afterwards, Steve Martin to this day has a hard time talking about John Candy without tears in his eyes. The movie originally ran for 3 hours and 30 minutes. The film's editor Paul Hirsch, and John Hughes, cut the film down to 2 hours. The studio still believed it was too long and made them cut 30 more minutes!

i do think some of the scenes i’ve heard they cut out would have made the film a little awkward, and the final cut is really good. but i hope they release a full version or something with all (or at least most) of the deleted scenes to add more depth

We still say “Those aren’t pillows!” and “How does he know which way we’re going?” We usually remember how funny the movie is but it’s good to remember the sweet ending too.

The infamous minute long *18 F-Bombs* at the car rental desk is why this movie is *Rated (R)* They refuse to remove that scene to get a lesser rating

John Candy always plays such loveable characters and has a way of breaking your heart and making you laugh all at the same time.
That little machine at the desk of the motel is how credit cards used to be processed before you could swipe a magnetic strip. There was a multiple sheet form that first was inserted in a slot on the cash register. The register would print the receipt for your purchase onto the form. Then the credit card was put into that little machine with the form on top of it and a handle was pulled to smoosh them together so that the credit card number and expiration date is imprinted onto the form. You would then sign the form and the clerk would give you a page from the form, with the store keeping a page for their records and a page was sent to the credit card company to be processed.
One of the absolute classics! The chemistry between Martin and Candy is sublime, just hilarious. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving Mama and Papa! 🥰🥰🥰
