  • Certificate of Residency: Thailand requirement to buy a vehicle, open a Thai bank account, get a Thai Drivers License, and buy a condo
What is a Certificate of Residence? What is a Residency Certificate? A Residency Certificate or Certificate of Residency is not the same as Thailand residency for foreigners. It is a Thailand Immigration required document used to get settled with essential considerations for residents of Thailand. This is a common Thailand Immigration requirement that you may get multiple times during your stay in Thailand.
If you're wondering how to get a Certificate of Residency, check out this video including why you need it, where you can get it, how you can get it, and other questions and concerns expats often have regarding residency and this document.

You are so right about it varying province to province.
In Surin province, Immigration will not issue a Certificate for you to use for car purchase or driver's license until you have been to the Dept. of Land Transport and obtained a letter from them confirming your eligibility for car purchase or driver's license.
When I did it the DLT would not give me a letter until I got something from Immigration to show that I was living in Thailand! In a flash of inspiration, I showed them my 90 day slip and that was good enough. I then had to get photocopies of my passport, visa page, NZ drivers license and International Driving Permit. My copies were not acceptable, as I had tried to save paper and doubled up. Oops - basic error there! So, downstairs to the lady in the coffee shop who did copies for a few baht. Back upstairs and handed them in.
I got the letter after about 15 minutes. Then it was back to Immigration.
I had my photocopies, my TM30 form, passport sized photos, and my partner was with me with her ID and deeds to her property.
They ignored my photocopies, TM30 form, and my photographs. They took my passport, Nop's ID and property deeds, and photocopied them, and told us to wait. About 15 minutes later I had my certificate.
Back to the DLT via the hospital for the Medical certificate. Getting the driver's licence is another story!

Thanks for sharing your experience Martin! It’s funny how every province can have different requirements or process than other provinces. It can be frustrating to do on your own, even with a Thai partner’s assistance! Glad to hear you got it worked out 😊

fyi: According to the US Embassy's website:
"Beginning March 1, 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok and U.S. Consulate General in Chiang Mai will no longer notarize residency affidavits." ...for FOR USE WITH THE ROYAL THAI DEPARTMENT OF LAND TRANSPORT
You can find current information on their website.

I opened a bank account at Bangkok Bank without a certificate of residency. Also the "Public Handbook: The application for collecting a Certificate of Residence (TM.16)" does not mention a 90 day check-in.... with my Non-O Visa...so its a bit confusing what I hear and read on the internet.

@@ThailandEliteSpecialist Hi there! I have a question. I would like to move to Thailand on permanent basis. I am married to Thai woman, we live together for 12 years in UK. I am resident of UK but I hold Latvian passport. What the best options will be for me? How much will it cost in total? Thanks, Andrejs.

Hi Taharben, sorry I just saw your comment. If you do it yourself, you will probably need a lease and your TM30. If you use the help of an agent, usually you only need a TM30.

Hi Hailey, If I want to get a non-immigrant O visa, will you be able to do everything for me there in Chiang Mai, or will I have to do some things here. I understand I will have to get a tourist visa here in Australia, but will you assist me in getting a Thai bank account when I get to Thailand, and everything else I need to do get an O visa, or Elite Visa? Is an Elite Visa suitable for someone over 60?
