I worked at Fergusons in the 70,s and remember when Clune Park area was a thriving area. Of course when the shipbuilding disappeared, so did the people, really a shame but we can all thank Mrs Thatcher for that. I left the Port in 1979 but still keep tabs and it really is heartbreaking to the industry that has been lost in that area. Wife at the time worked in the Playtex (gone) i served an apprenticeship at Fergusons (still there) ...for now.

Imagine what someone with the cash and contacts could do with that lot, all it takes is a bag of cash and some hard graft and before you know it there goes 2/3rds of your homelessness gone. It is a goldmine waiting for the taking!! Easy affordable homes for the poorer of society, i mean just imagine what they could look like all done up, it could make a lot of people very happy and make an investor very rich in the process, i wish I had the cash i tell ya..all over the country there is vacant buildings just begging for a somebody to take the task on. Great video Billy, stay safe.

Probably around 500 homes left to decay, ultimately to be demolished and replaced with around 100 semi or detached boxes. I can't believe there's not an architect & developer or housing association who couldn't refurb these blocks with highly efficient heating & insulation systems for £50 million if the flats were to sell for £100,000 each. Think of the employment & training opportunities for local youngsters during the re-development.

This is not post 'soviet era' Billy. It was built in 1905 to house shipyard workers. Privately owned. The council started buying up properties after the collapse of the shipyards. Some still remain privately owned in fact one is for sale on Zoopla for £5,000! 😅. It is earmarked for demolition and new housing. Basically been empty since 1997 and here we are 27 years later. The buildings were deemed too dangerous to live in hence the removal of residents.

Glad you came Billy I can only assume you ventured to my hometown of Greenock aswell. Was actually a lot worse here a couple of years ago around when the girl was found dead under the floorboards because everything was so easily accessible. Flats used as crack dens ect. Now they’ve put the security fences up and have a patrol it’s not as bad. Don’t know if you visited kelburn estate just behind this across the main road that’s a mad area. it’s not as well known because it’s still fully inhabited but been a fare few murders on that tiny estate (literally maybe 5/6 Tenements). There was a father and young son still living in one of the dilapidated tenements on Robert street about a year ago I’m sure not sure if they are still there. Sad to think for some kids this is there home and supposed little comfort in life, supposed place of safety.

The square flats were built to house incoming shipyard workers back in the day.the flats eventually went into private hands, and some unscrupulous landlords (quite a few of certain demograph)let them to people with chaotic lives.the end result was inevitable,it became drug ridden with addicts and dealers.its a shame good housing was left to rot,it all needs flattened.

Those buildings look solid. It's a pity the local council couldn't step in and refurbish them. I'm sure it would go some way to solving homelessness and/or young people finding homes unaffordable to buy.

The other side of Greenock near the Port, like Gibshill and Whinhill always felt more of a bad vibe than Larkfield.

I stay in larkfield and it’s fine. Nothing like it was 20 odd years ago. Big man would be well disappointed. Larkfield actually looks good nowadays tbh
