Easy affordable homes for the poorer of society, i mean just imagine what they could look like all done up, it could make a lot of people very happy and make an investor very rich in the process, i wish I had the cash i tell ya..all over the country there is vacant buildings just begging for a somebody to take the task on. Probably around 500 homes left to decay, ultimately to be demolished and replaced with around 100 semi or detached boxes. I can't believe there's not an architect & developer or housing association who couldn't refurb these blocks with highly efficient heating & insulation systems for £50 million if the flats were to sell for £100,000 each. Think of the employment & training opportunities for local youngsters during the re-development.

This is not post 'soviet era' Billy. It was built in 1905 to house shipyard workers. Privately owned. The council started buying up properties after the collapse of the shipyards. Some still remain privately owned in fact one is for sale on Zoopla for £5,000! 😅. It is earmarked for demolition and new housing. Basically been empty since 1997 and here we are 27 years later. The buildings were deemed too dangerous to live in hence the removal of residents.
Glad you came Billy I can only assume you ventured to my hometown of Greenock aswell. Was actually a lot worse here a couple of years ago around when the girl was found dead under the floorboards because everything was so easily accessible. Flats used as crack dens ect. Now they’ve put the security fences up and have a patrol it’s not as bad. Don’t know if you visited kelburn estate just behind this across the main road that’s a mad area. it’s not as well known because it’s still fully inhabited but been a fare few murders on that tiny estate (literally maybe 5/6 Tenements). There was a father and young son still living in one of the dilapidated tenements on Robert street about a year ago I’m sure not sure if they are still there. Sad to think for some kids this is there home and supposed little comfort in life, supposed place of safety.
Greenock is really handsome some magnificent civic buildings and churches .......the old town bit is so attractive too must have been a right beauty in its heyday...... this is just me but you would have thought the money spent on the the new shopping centre would have better spent on preserving the unique historic town but maybe that's what the locals wanted 🤷♀️.......I'm glad it's doing better.....so heartbreaking to see all those town on the Clyde become so rundown........ used to love going to weatherspoons on a Saturday from Dunoon with my mate and rummaging around the charity shops.....met some truly lovely people .......❤🏴👍🏻🏴

Was there in 1980 visiting an uncle and cousins, the community had a big barbecue not far away in a field where we played baseball, had burgers and as kids just had a fun time. The community was tight and everyone was engaged in it😄👏🏽 Great days…

Those buildings look solid. It's a pity the local council couldn't step in and refurbish them. I'm sure it would go some way to solving homelessness and/or young people finding homes unaffordable to buy. Thousands of similar tenements have been demolished over the years all over Glasgow (Gorbals, Springburn, Gallowgate etc) some of them actually quite grand.
💯 agree with you, it's tragic that they pulled down so many solid old tenements, in thriving communities.. and replaced them with souless Barrat type gaffs and "apartments " = poky boxes. Same all over the country, beautiful homes demolished when renovation makes a lot more sense .
