It's incredible to see the unique approaches people take to producing. Some prefer to work with a small group of trusted individuals for obvious reasons, while others value inclusivity. This diversity and creativity within our industry is what makes it fun!
2nd on 'your personality and how you sell your self in important" is so legit. Talent is important but there's a lot of talented people out there but if someone likes you they remember that.
This was really nice, thank you for making this. Very validating to hear the process and values that I have found on my own mirrored by the people you spoke to.
Loved this Scott, thanks so much for putting this together. It's always great to hear from the other side. There are so many aspects to producing as well so many different ways to do it.
This was an incredible video. Producing is so undervalued in the early stages, not near as sexy as cinematography or directing. Showing this in my Production Planning college class that I teach.
Great video. Can you make a video exploring a commercial film directors job. I want to know more about their preproduction, preparation, and overall task
Hey Sondre, if you watch my Process playlist there a bunch of examples I’ve broken down from directing jobs on there. This might be a good one to start with: th-cam.com/video/ZlFDe2v2ivg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vAGxqIkgXSOd1n5z
I contract for an agency as a DoP and I can tell you that their process is to bring in the Creative Director first, then they bring in the Producer and then the rest of the crew.
I absolutely love all of your content! As someone who is just starting out - learning - your videos have amazing information that no one else is putting out there! I have a question, as you are sometimes amenable to discussing taboo topics such as pay...On a small production that will only last one or 2 days, one of those self funded but you are giving everyone a token amount for their time sets, when is it proper to pay the cast and crew? 1st day...last day?
As much as you can afford I guess. Really up to you, if they’re proper working professionals no less than £100 PP I would say. If their inexperienced and early in their career you could ask people if they’d be willing to come on board for less. Just ask people what their willing to do and think about what’s in it for them.
I have my own insurance that covers all my equipment, but when I’m working with productions companies (which is most of the time) they also have their own insurance. But if you have your own glut I would advise having your own insurance.
Simple man, play the game just like they do. They don’t speak about it but they love getting extra cash, offer them 5-10% of your salary, you will get hired 9 out of 10 times. They are gatekeeping for non creative reasons, by the end of they day it is how much money everybody takes home. Eve if Jesus him self signed you a letter stating that you are the best director in a world, they will get one that knows how to play the game and that sharing is caring.

@@ScottPetersFilms Thanks for replying. I thought that might be it. Definitely gonna check it out. 👍
Hey I work as an assistant director. The way you are explaining it, Seems like I am doing the job of an assistant producer.
I love spread sheets also.
😂😂😂
As a freelance DP, do you make your clients get insurance if you’re bringing your personal gear to set….camera, lighting etc. ?
I have my own insurance that covers all my equipment, but when I’m working with productions companies (which is most of the time) they also have their own insurance. But if you have your own glut I would advise having your own insurance.
love this
Scott. You da man.
Thanks Fraser 🙏🏻
i got pushed out from a big project by a gate-keeping producer last month. How do I combat this from happening again

What were the reasonings? Is it a personality clash? Do you just not get on?
