Following on from some discussion over a previous video where I worked on a $42,000 job for over a month but came off it having lost money rather than made anything I spoke to others in the industry about their thoughts on working for free.
Like with anything there are pros and cons but I personally have reaped financial benefits time and time again from doing free work. It doesn't always come back to you, but for me at least it almost always has.

Scott, fabulous video. A caveat on free for me is that free works upward not on the same level i.e. we heard it all: "do this for me for free and the next we'll pay you". When the "next" is coming and they have a budget they are not thinking of you anymore with their $100k budget, because you were "free". They'll go out and find the person that communicates that "HE" is worth the $100k. BUT, for your showreel or you starting out it's great. It's what Tyler mentions, a balance. I personally have yet to see a free project working out in the long run with THAT particular "free" relationship :)

I get so frustrated when I read people saying "One should never work for free."
The reason is clearly explained in this video yet some (who's motives for being involved in the industry I question) still don't get it. I guess these same people are the ones complaining of never getting a break.

I have been filming for free too all these years.
I paid for gear, studio space and hire musicians/model/talents out of my own pocket.
It's not about the money for me because I have a full-time career in aerospace. I love making videos and I get a lot of stick from my family members who thinks I should start charging. I have no intentions of starting my own production company or videography services yet. It's pure passion.
For now I am able to carry on working for free as I have a day job and I am thankful for that. However, I have expensive taste in gear.
I am saving up to buy the Atlas Orion Anamorphics. Who know by then, I am able to start charging fees at a high price.
Keep up the superb work Scott.
Do what you love, work hard, and the money will come in naturally.

Really interesting video! I'm probably at the same career point you where at 17 now, and I think free work is the only current way to get my name out there. I do some work for a smaller production company on the side and I feel like their connections might lead to something for me in the future, still looking for higher end camera trainee Jobs with budgets above £1000 though

@@angelcastro_WRR Hey, thanks for the offer, I've never had something like this come from TH-cam, sadly I'm from the UK, England more specifically, though so it's quite a flight to LA from here 😅. It's really kind of you to offer though! Do you have an Instagram at all, I'll drop you a quick follow?

I don't know. I don't enjoy filmmaking enough to do it on top of my already busy work load to pay the bills. So for me filmmaking and video work is not for enjoyment. It's just work. Like a plummer or any other job. Some days I hate it. Some days are satisfying. But it's not restful, so it's work and work deserves to be paid.

If you invested a ton of money, spent a lot of hours learning to become a professional and some random dude without education and with consumer camera can do your job for client which is happy with a result... are you really a professional?

As a filmmaker, Filmmaking, cinematography, lights, colour is very subjective, but there's always one key, network, the more people you collaborate and work with, the more opportunities you'll get, so what he said wasn't wrong, working for free give you more chance to work with new people, eventually build up your connections.

Either you and everyone else works for free or everyone gets paid properly. Plain and simple
