    Matt Johnson on ‘Grace’ is the definition of tasteful but interesting drumming. Never predictable but never over the top, and always serving the song while still having an identity,

      For me growing up drumming in the early 2000s, he was the best. Touch, feel, technique, chops, pocket - that record has everything. He's still one of my favourite drummers.

    Here is something I haven't seen on drumeo yet: A drummer who is not just smiling away and superficially answering the questions or just sticking to his or her agenda, but a drummer who is really driven by the urge to convey crucial theoretical ideas and concepts, going with the flow and really, really thinking about the questions he is being asked.
    He seems to be a little stressed, but he is the first drummer I see on here who in this case is not just seeming tired, but even more fervent in his expressions.
    He is so fired up to convey these thoughts and find the best possible phrasing, that he doesn't try to seem sympathetic. All of his energy goes into the ideas and concepts and I personally find that very sympathetic!

    Big reason why i love Grace and Eternal Life is because of this guy's drumming on those tracks. Glad to see he didn't fade into obscurity like so many other musicians have and that he's only getting stronger.

      Incredible album. brilliant drumming - especially the left foot, on grace or dream brother in particular (the splashes at the start are very cool). Matts balance is insane, he looks so casual and relaxed playing with both feet. I almost fall off my chair doing that sort of thing and really struggle reaching for tom work when im leaning back to help use both feet

    Matt Johnson is THE drummer I would LOVE to have in my band.
    A passionate, humble, amazing musician, able to visualise drumming through images and metaphors that are inspiring and enriching for any musician (I am a guitarist).
    Thank you, Matt, and keep spreading beauty and poetry through drumming.

    I'm glad this guy didn't condense down a single thing he said, whatever the point he was making he spoke from a place of passion and of someone who truly experiences music when they play it in a sense beyond what they hear, or even see. It's refreshing to hear someone actually talk about the experiences that notes and the space between them bring, sick lesson. 10/10.

    Great to see Matt Johnson on Drumeo. Matt's drumming on Grace was a great influence on my drumming development when I was 15....- pretty much changed the way I approach the drumset. Such poise and thought in his playing....and for all the chopheads out there.....yes he still has a few sneaky tricks up his sleave....just let's them out at the right time.....Matt is a master of placement and 'tastefulness'(for want of a better word). Thanks Matty!!and thanks Drumeo!!

    I remember years go i put on score all grace album drum parts. Each track is amazing, so original, creative, challenging, and really sounding good. My favourite was the crazy part at the end of Dream Brothers. but god, mojo pin is fantastic, grace too, so real, eternal life... and how simple grooving but subtle and perfect is Last Goodbye. For me Matt Johnson is one of the very finest drummer, with a very high sense of taste, and so underated ! Thanks for this interview!

    Interesting analogies about hitting a drum in the center. My personal version of why hitting in the center provides the best all around sound is so the vibrations move evenly towards the outer edge of the drum and then evenly return back to the center. Like when a raindrop hits a puddle; the ripples move outwards and then the splash moves upwards in the center.

    Physics of where you hit the drum: The drumhead has a fundamental frequency and many harmonics we call "overtones," or multiples of the fundamental. Center is the point where the most deflection occurs and you're exciting the fundamental tone the most. It'll be the most "natural" sound since it's whatever you've tuned to. The further you play up the head, the more tension is on the head, so you'll be exciting more of the higher harmonics. It's why a buzz roll is higher pitched and easier on the edge than in the center.

    To have self-control and play simple is an art form not many drummers have. I played with alot of drummers and only few can play a simple tight groove without losing interest, self-control or just being too stubborn to see past their own ego. I dare you, go record yourself and hear the truth and how your reflected outside your ego mind.

      The "clock bit" reminded me of Christian Vander from Magma, quite a character himself. ^^

    • @AquaAnim
      @AquaAnim 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FSBass Love Christian Vander. Although according to Matt his style would be "dead". Did it confuse you when he was talking about return to forever, and keith moon? Maybe I took it wrong, but I dont think the drums should just serve as a supporting role. To me that would be going back to before Gene Krupa and Buddy, were the drummer was just in the background. I think a drummer should still be able to serve the music, and express themselves. Joey Baron plays amazing solo's for an hour, just drums, and it still maintains musicality.

    • @Charlyfromthenuclearcity
      @Charlyfromthenuclearcity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I'm really not a specialist about drums and drummers, but I think the "serve music/express yourself" relationship is one of the toughest with drums for a lot of reasons. Matt Johnson lessons about simplicity and the drumkit elements having 1st, 2nd (etc) roles are great for that matter : you can greatly modify your direct musical environment with very subtle things. Literally, the musical choices you make to serve the music are an expression of yourself, and it's not always about solos and complexity.
      That thing being said, I think the "self-expression" element is often over-rated by muscians. In my mind, it's not about the player but the piece, and sometimes you have to erase yourself to serve the music. In this way, I think of musicians as "vehicles" for the music.
      I don't really know if this makes any sense. ^^
      Also I did not know about Joey Baron. I've just watched a video of a solo in Budapest. Really colourful playing !

    "one of the reasons that young people don't listen as well is because they're not sufficiently comfortable with what they're playing. And when they do listen, what they're playing falls apart".
    After 10 years of playing including 4 years taking lessons and practicing each 1-2 day for 1-1.5h this is still my biggest complex that I have as a drummer.

      Bartosz Dolewski then use a tripod with a camcorder? :) I use mine constantly. It's not necessary to be Buddy Rich. We already got one.
      Look, Meg White and Lars still.make a living playing. There ya go. Believe what the band says. Let the drum line breathe. Don't overplay or constantly show off.

    Matt was the one and only drummer that made Grace so much more the best.

    Listen to his playing on Jeff Buckley's "Grace", and you totally hear his approach to drumming.
    What a valuable lesson in hearing your place in the music and playing it powerfully. Much like Gavin Harrison plays as well, with a specific anchor (icebreaker) pulsing at all times.
