    In an era where military tactics focused on long lines of infantry military bands helped animate the troops, also the drums helped with staying in step on the march

      Drums also helped commanders communicate orders in the loud expanse of a battlefield.

    I am in the New York Young Colonials and I am a snare drummer. I see that it says quick-step! We do the regular Old 1812 so I did the regular one on the drum-pad while this was playing!
    You guys sound great!

    Some drummers, definitely buglers, probably not many fifers, did play in battle. It was how orders were conveyed. Many units had full bands, however; it was these "extraneous" musicians who lugged the (ridiculously few) stretchers. Also, many 12 year old drummer boys were killed in action; I have a book about it somewhere. I believe one boy even won a medal for carrying his drum away from Bull Run while soldiers were throwing away their rifles.

    You know what is very odd? At least I think it's odd;
    No one has taken it upon themselves to do an instructional video on TH-cam on how to play the Revolutionary or Civil War 6 hole fife up through a simple tune or two.
    I mean there are instructional videos for almost any kind of instrument including folk instruments, such as the Irish flute and bagpipes even the Recorder. Plus there's a lot of people on TH-cam showing off their individual talents with those instruments as well as may be throwing in a little ad hoc instruction.
    But there's really little to nothing, mostly nothing, for any kind of fife much less that particular kind.
    And some fife and drum corps is look kind of small. It seems to me that that would be a good recruiting tool to have some videos out there like that.
    Again, kind of weird that nobody has done that.

      @@mikesmnell414 Well my OP is 4 years old and in that first year I was able to muscle through a few simple, slow tunes by watching flute videos for instruction on forming an embouchure along with some modified bagpipe chanter fingering.
      None of which really puts me in any position to teach others. But somewhere in that year I lost interest anyway and so now I just have a nice blackwood fife that I inspect and maintain about twice a year to keep it in good condition just for the heck of it.

    Drummer boys were 12 years old or 10 and had a 95% death rate in battle of them getting killed

    • @CarolinaFifesDrums
      @CarolinaFifesDrums  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stereotypical "little drummer boy" was mostly a Northern thing and simply not true in the majority of Field Musicians. In North Carolina, which is the state we portray, an examination of the rosters of all state regiments found only 1 musician being under the age of 18 and the only reason he was allowed to serve is because his father was the Drum Major for that particular regiment. All other musicians were of regular military age. Some, like the Moravians of Salem, NC (present day Winston-Salem) served as musicians because their faith did not allow them to take up arms but they still wished to contribute to the war efforts and they were already talented musicians (the Moravians are still well-known to this day for their music).

    Nice seeing this - political correctness has done away with all our reenactments. I loved the Tannehill show every July. Lots of band music, vendors, seeing camp life, the battle with men, guns, horses and cannons. It was hot, damned hot unless you got lucky with rain. People including reenactors passed out now and then. But then Obama did away with all this. Have not been back to that park since. I hate seeing our history, good and bad, swept away. Todays kids know nothing about our country and how it works.

I prefer the days when I was a kid when I good enjoy watching Gettysburg and playing with my confederate and union toys in peace. Believing that we should respect both sides. Now it’s just slavery this. Confederates racist that.
