Absolutely fantastic, stirs the blood and quickens the heart. As an Englishman who appreciates the sound of a good fife and drum corps I take my hat off to these musicians. It's just a shame there aren't more of these groups around in this country. We may have lost the great rebellion of 1776, but may the Gods bless the United States of America.
@ThePatriot213 I am German and I agree with you. I think Aerica is a wounderfull country with many friendly and smart citezens. And America always fought everytime , everywhere in the world for freedom and democacy. Greetings from Germany :-)
Brilliant History what would we do without it Hope the young people keep this up each year its great to see the young taking an active part in playing in a fantastic band with a history that should never be forgotten great a first class performance
I performed with the Fifes and Drums during this show and the crowd loved us. The corps has come along way in the quality of music. The drumline is amazing. Definitely improved from this video and as far as CW is concerned we are two different types of corps so you can't really compare them. Both the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drum have great musicians.
One of the best performances on TH-cam. I was in Drum and Bugle in the '50's/60's when I was a teen. Always awed by a good "Ancient" corps as the Fife and Drums were called in competition.
I miss living in this town, born and raised in the beautiful Adirondack town of Ticonderoga! I miss going to the fort for free as a resident, and seeing the view, and learning all that history!
this is the one that plays for the NPS. unlike the soldiers during the war who used cockades to represent nationality, we use them to represent different ranks. no idea why fort ti let us in but i am glad that they did. this was my first field show and a great one to be a part of.
Being from a background of drum and bugle Corps and pipe bands I can say the drums are very tight and well rehearsed. I can do most of what these folks did and it is not easy. However being 57 now I doubt I could carry those drums. I also doubt I could march like that. That fife thing were you played each other's fifes was very cool.
Gen. Washington gave the order. We will advance on yorktown. The sound of the fife and drums bellowed through the Streets. It was at that moment Lord Gen. Cornwallis new his fight would be over soon.
I agree. These guys should definitely play for Ron Paul. He's is the single most patriotic man today. He's is a modern day forefather and a strict constitutionalist. I'm sure he would be very honored.
Wow!So cool.A successful and a very impressing reenactment of a very important piece of world history.I almost hear the rumbling of 6 pounders and smell the gun powder smoke of flintlock rifles! The hair on my arms are stand up!Would love to watch it live.10+
@RYKYSY The tune is called, "World Turned Upside Down." Historically, it is said to be the tune that was played when Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at York Town.
I think I'm going to steal some of the choreography, for a totally different context and the other side of the Atlantic. Impressed by how many manouvers have been fitted into that space- I know how hard it is!
This was the national muster, about eighty times larger than Ti's usual muster. They allowed I think 26+ corps to show up regardless of authenticity. I was in Ti's corps at the time. things were a lot different back then than they are now.
...nations of the United States and Great Britain have a common history and a bond like that will never be broken despite a different viewpoint on matters. While I long for a day when Scotland is independent and decides her own destiny, I wish the British people no harm in that endeavor. I have visited many fields where Englishmen and Americans lie side by side and although I may not see eye to eye with them, I am proud to call them friends. That is something I hope we can all agree with.
I quite agree avinavy! Being an American I take so much pride in our past, although there may have been some faults, no different from any other nation. Although when Cornwallis said that, I believe he did not care too much about the people, but rather the money.
I am an American of Scottish ancestry and while I have my own feelings about things like independence for Scotland and so on, I have an affection for the English people and the English military as brothers in arms and united in a common cause. So many, too many, these days cannot remember the sacrifice of the generation who fought and died saving the world from fascism and despots who sought the ruination of the world in which we now peacefully live. We may have had our differences, but the...
Hey, its Joshua Here. Sadly, I am not with them much. I tutor on the side, but I retired in 2005. The D. Major would be Lynn Gant in this video. Good jobs guys! I know this is from a year or two ago, but you looked great! Joshua
Hey: Although the modern pedal bass drum was not invented until the 1930's, the Turkish Drum or Davul is a rope tensioned bass drum that dates to the 12th century. It was brought back by the British during their Imperial era and was integrated into their field music along with kettle drums, french horns and other instruments that aren't shown here. As the American field musick was an outgrowth of the British, you see the Turkish Drum used in their groups as well.
Right you are trekclev, right you are. My apologies for not having included my brothers and sisters of Ireland in that as well. Without the sons and daughters of the Emerald Isle, the world would be a much diminished place and I will always be grateful for their service and contributions as well as should all who remember those who allow us to live as we do today. Thanks be to you for reminding me.
As I understand things, Pres. Washington (as General of the Continental army) specified red uniforms with blue trim for the fifes and drums (cf. red with gold trim for British combat troops) for differentiation from Continental combat troops (blue with contrasting trim by specialty).
Sorry not sure. I remember the World turned upside down because of a tour and a t.v. documentary. The world turned upside down tune was originally known as "The Kings Own". Was played along with "Old Britannia" for the king.
The World Turned Upside Down was most likely played at the surrender, but it is only legend. We believe it was played because to surrender you had to play a tune illegal in your or not of your origin. The World Turned Upside Down was very illegal tune in Great Britain, as it refers to King Charles, who had been beheaded.
If I should Fall to Rise no more, as may Comrades did before, May I ask the Fifes and Drums to play, Over The Hills & Far Away? O'er The His and O'er The Main, Through Flanders Portugal & Spain! KING GEORGE Commands an We Obey, Over The Hills & Far Away!
the people wearing red are part of the senior corps and the people wearing blue are junior corps, junior corps wears what a farmer would've worn during the revolution, which is basically what the militia wore since they were farmers who just joined the war and wore what they had.
@skarr12 the colors of the drummers' coats were opposite to those of regular troops. Their colors were reversed in order to be distinguished from the rest of the Colonial Infantry
Thank all past present, presentations fir future we never forget sacrifices that were made to make nation, we should reunited as people now. Thank 🇫🇷 😊 🙏 🇫🇷 😊 🙏 🇫🇷 😊 🙏 🇫🇷 😊 🙏 🇫🇷 😊 may live on forever, I this not easy plan, and time put into educational reality.
It's good to see how people can reach an understanding about what happened in the past and forgive others. Like General Cornwallis said in the movie "The Patriot", "Those colonists are our brothers and sisters and when this conflict will be over we will reestablish commerce with them" Too bad for him that the colonists won in the end :) I find American history exceptionally fascinating
You do have to admit, the British were impressive in battle. Don't tell me you wouldn't have to change after standing there waiting for the world's greatest army at the time marching towards you, having said that, I do love my country, the US of A. Ron Paul 2012
Awesome!! Great to see that women can get involved with it too :) I'd love to know what the tunes are? Sorry if you already got asked that but there are a lot of comments to check through!
I used to play most of these songs many years ago but for the life of me the only three names I remember are Yankee Doodle, (of course) Cornliquor (although I believe it was spelled with a "K") and World Turned Upside Down. Please forgive my absent mindedness but as I said it's been a very long time.
We did. American army had their bands wearing red during the war of independence to separate them from front line troops, British army had their bands wearing yellow etc.
Can someone explain the difference between the two uniforms being worn? I see the redcoat (not to be confused with British Redcoats) and the white shirt black sleeveless jacket style. Is this two different regiments or something?
mmarsh1972 So basically Yorktown Fife and Drum kind of works as Colonial Williamsburg’s, there is a junior corps (the kids in black waistcoats and white sleeves (CW uses white hunting frocks, unless it is very hot outside)) Senior corps uses the actual battle Regimentals which is the red with blue trim (they are musicians so the coats are reversed dress). Sorry I was late responding so I hope you see it!!
The Navy Blue Regimentals are worn by the Director and Instructional Staff. The Red Regimentals are worn by the youth members with roughly three years of experience (more or less), and the blue waistcoats are worn by the Junior members with less than three years of experience.
The coats and facings of non combatants were often reversed or variations of the standard military uniforms of the armies in which they served. This served to identify them on the field as such in accordance with the rules of war.
Kris Wetzel Lord God watch us good heart and mid so time is gold life and Lord God help the Philippine ,Lord God blessed you always be take care***********
Will you be back soon at Fort Ticonderoga for a performance ? My son loves your music and seeing you live would be quite thrilling for him. He's 9 years old.
Very nice enjoyed this alot. Is this group a part of a proper battle reinactment group or do they just play the music and marches etc? Great either way. Greetings from Scotland
no its not wrong its right...the music sections of each army reversed the color of their jackets...British wore blue and americans red...the idea was to show respect for soldiers not caring weapons...and they where encouraged not too shoot drummers and fife men
British word Red coats, the reason behind this was because through smoke they would see each other but then switched to camo because the enemy see you too
white The Wars of the Roses take their name from the color of the roses-Red for Lancaster and white for York-that each house supposedly used as their emblem
@littlefield19 Hard to say... A few years back they decided to pursue a different course and the membership began to diminish. They still perform regularly in town, but they are a shadow of what they once were.
I think that you find, depending on Regiment that most armies of the period (including the British Army) reversed their colors on bandsmen's uniforms... (and sometimes they still do)... since Continental Infantry had blue uniforms with red facings, their bandsmen had red uniforms with blue facings.
@Treize69 1) Yes and yes. i am studying the civil war in american history in school and i find that the music here of the american revolution has very similar music to the civil war battle period.
@MetallicaFan035 Actually the reason they are so peaceful now is because they were in a war from the 1500's to the 1800's almost non-stop, so they had to take a break lol. But they were damn good, they usually crushed much larger armies than their own in most battles they fought. Look up the Swedish Empire

As a Brit I have to say these guys are absolutely brilliant almost tempted to say 'Hurrah for the colonials !!' Fantastic performance.
Just remember who won redcoat. LoL

Excellent! I love the old fort. I've visited a few times and never get tired of it. The Yorktown Fife and drums are outstanding!
Janet Abbott just wondering... you commented this six years ago. how are you now?
I performed with the Fifes and Drums during this show and the crowd loved us. The corps has come along way in the quality of music. The drumline is amazing. Imagine living in these times??? beautiful job...
This is a great video. The music is fantastic, magnificent American marching music.
MAGNIFICENT precision! 👍👍 It's been years since I was healthy enough to play and I miss it more than words can say. 😢
One of the best performances on TH-cam. I was in Drum and Bugle in the '50's/60's when I was a teen. Always awed by a good "Ancient" corps as the Fife and Drums were called in competition.
I have never seen anything quite like this. To my detriment obviously. Very impressive.
Wow what a presentation! god bless America
I can see the beach in Yorktown,VA from my house and hearing this music in the morning is amazing.
I miss living in this town, born and raised in the beautiful Adirondack town of Ticonderoga! I miss going to the fort for free as a resident, and seeing the view, and learning all that history!
This is really inspirational when you see it in person. It brought tears to my eyes. Fort Ti always holds a special place in my heart.
Very impressive.I especially enjoyed the mutual playing of the fifes.

Those drums really resonate!
I love this! The part at 6:32 is the same drumbeat my high school band used to play while marching onto the field.
they are good because they are of british descent.they wouldn't be out of place if they were in belfast on the 12th of july.
I fell in love with a fifer Pete Charbonnaeu way back in the day after one day at Fort Ti. Loved these guys, thanks so much for posting.
God Bless America!
I went here over the summer of 2009. It was realy fun:), id highly recomend it esecpily since the renovated it
My dad has an old drum hanging in his study. Not sure if it’s civil war or rev but the sticks are massive - bigger than than 2b’s for sure. Powerful!!

They both use the drum and fife mostly.
The song after Yankee Doodle is called World Turned Upside Down. I read that's the song the British played when they went to surrender at Yorktown
