    I don’t write race reports or have a blog about my adventures, I take pictures make videos about them. A couple weeks ago, I ran 100 miles through the mountains in Virginia, and this is my story!
    My family has a motto, “We can do hard things.” This is such an important lesson we want our kids to learn in a time where doing less work and making things as easy as possible is celebrated. Sure, that’s great a lot of the time and I benefit greatly from the daily advances in technology, but sometimes you need to dig in and work harder than you thought you could to do something you think you can’t. We talk to our kids about it when they are struggling with things kids struggle with, and we show them how by actively seeking out challenges and not shying away from the ones that come to us. We want them to be confident when they’re in the arena and no one else can help.
    This race was years in the making and by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The video didn’t turn out as I dreamed it would, I had to ditch the camera at the halfway point. I realized that finishing would take everything my body and mind had left, and I needed to focus entirely on it.
    There’s also another video linked where I talk though the whole race and tell the story of what it’s like for someone from Indiana to run 100 miles in the mountains. The Grindstone 100 is an absolutely amazing race.
    Thanks to everyone that has supported me along the way, every bit of encouragement is huge. Enjoy the video!!

    Ryan, just discovering your videos 3 years late. I am also a Hoosier who did Grindstone in 2017 and was looking to refresh my memory of the course to advise a buddy who is running this year. I've done some tough mountain 100s in the American West (including Hardrock), and can confirm that Grindstone justifies its status as a Hardrock qualifier. I was super fit going into the 2017 race and still barely staggered in to the finish after losing my stomach on the long downhill into North River Gap. It was pretty much a barfy sufferfest from there to the finish. Thanks for the memories (mostly good!). Maybe I'll see you out on the trails.

    This race is in my neck of the woods. Haven’t run it - still working on completing my first 100 - but it’s on my bucket list.

    It’s hard to fathom running 100 miles at once. I just ran my first 20 miler two days ago and felt absolutely destroyed. I’m still struggling to figure out how I’d one day be able to get to that 100 mile point, seems like such insurmountable task! Seeing stuff like this always helps though. I’m running my first marathon a month from today, actually. Anyways, great video, excellent channel, and best of luck with accomplishing all of your 2019 running goals!

      That’s awesome, good luck at your marathon!! Congrats on your first 20 miler as well! For some people it just keeps building year after year and you keep wondering if you can do the next step up in distance. Keep at it and enjoy the process, it’s a fun ride!! Thanks!

    I like your editing style. You include scenes that are interesting to me, as if we were there with you at the race. I am always impressed with athletes like you are are able to complete the difficult endurance challenges while filming, which is a whole extra level of difficulty.

      Thanks John, that is really cool to hear. It’s definitely hard to carry and pull the camera out in those moments. Glad it makes a difference!

    Awesome! Getting ready to toe the line of my first 50k in a few hours. Your Grindstone series has been a big motivation. So glad I get to watch the 100 race vid this morning!

      My goal was sub 7. It was a 3 loop course on pretty technical trails. Finished in 6:50, so I'm happy!

    Congrats Ryan. I've been there where it just becomes a hassle to have to film and gopro. Dropped my gopro at the halfway point of a marathon once.

      Yeah, the toughness of the race just kicked me in the butt and back then I had a bigger and heavier selfie stick. There was just no way. It was sad though, looking back I should have done it differently. I carried it through the whole first night and got maybe 10 minutes of footage total, then dropped it off during the day. I should have not bothered to take it during the night and then had it for the daytime. Just wasn't thinking straight during my first 100. But recently, for Run Rabbit Run, I carried it the whole time and got footage throughout. Got a smaller and lighter selfie stick and just told myself I was keeping it the whole time! Thanks for stopping by recently, I checked your channel out, great content, keep it up!!!!!!

      @@RyanClaytonFilms oh nice. Yeah live and learn for sure. I'm heading out to Rocky Raccoon this weekend and was needing motivation on how to film. Your intro was badass. I'll be documenting some friends out there so I'm going to try to bring out my inner Billy Yang. Cheers.

      Haha, yes you are right!!! Well, Dec. 2nd are the lotteries for Hardrock and Western States, there is about a 0.00001% chance I'll get it to either, but waiting to find out. If not, I'll pick another epic 100 miler, maybe one out west! That day, I'll also be at the Jackson County 50/50 filming a documentary for a friend that will be up on this channel sometime soon. How did Tecumseh go for you?

    • @RedspringsRunner
      @RedspringsRunner 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Clayton I hope you get into one of those! My friend got injured about a month out for Tecumseh, so I decided to take an easier rode and ran the Monumental Marathon in Indy. It was a PR day, but was disappointed with the last 3 miles. So it's back to the trails at least for now.
