    Attitude is everything...finishing is just a bonus........i love your attitude regardless of having to stop at mile 82.......that keeps people like me hopeful that maybe one day i can try a 100 miler and whatever happens happens......it's all in the attitude......and yours is inspiring.......thank you Ryan...always love your videos!!!

    Great video Ryan, thanks for putting in the super-human effort to run the race AND film it! Hard for people to understand what its like to be out there on course, but this comes pretty close. That's me in the dark green shirt at 16:45, lap one at the Hickory Ridge aid station, with the taped up knee. My day went about about like yours - two awesome laps in mild conditions, then an UNBELIEVABLE rainstorm, a death march lap on trails that were basically flowing creeks, and then calling it quits at sunrise. Made is 77.7 miles (3 laps) in about 24 hours. It was a fun weekend!

      Thanks Philip, that means a lot!! The trails are special out there, such a fun course, and harder than you think it's going to be. So sorry to hear about your day ending early. The storm was like something I've never been in before. It just didn't let up for a minute the whole night. Really hard to describe it to people!! Thanks again, hope you can bounce back!

    Bummer about the outcome Ryan... proud of your effort to get to 82 miles! It was good to meet you at the Covered Bridge AS Saturday late afternoon! I did the 50, it started to rain when I was picking up drop bag at Covered Bridge AS. My thoughts and prayers were with all you 100 milers... that rain was torrential!! Amazing effort my friend!

    Great job buddy!!! The best part is that you knew you had it. You ran the race well and a finish was certain.
    I shared your fate. I was a bit too close to another runner, didn't see a root, rolled my ankle pretty early (mile 10ish). Had trouble keeping stability with that ankle after that. Rolled it again hard at mile 22. Medics wrapped it at mile 30. When the flooding started, I couldn't see the roots anymore and just kept rolling that ankle. Mile 68ish, medics checked my ankle and it was black. I was advised to stop and I did. Otherwise I felt good. So this video really touched me since it felt so similar to my race. Thank you for all the great videos you make.

    Thanks for this video! I did the Mohican 100 as my first 100, and it was cool to see your recap. I felt like I was so tunneled vision to get to that finish, that I don't remember a lot of it. The rain was brutal. I'm not even sure how we made it though that. The fog was so intense. Sorry for your outcome especially after such a hard effort. Hope you're healing well. I can't wait to watch your adventures at WS.

    Wonder if Bob Blum is still involved with the Race Direction?
    First year of this race was won by the amazing airline Captain Dave Drach. Unfortunately killed in motorcycle accident caused by truck losing its load on a curve some years ago.
    (Assuming this is the race that debuted in 1990 and was called "Mohican Mania" and ran the weekend following Old Dominion that year) when a hot O.D. was followed by that one being cold and wet with a problem high water crossing that became dangerous,I believe that the course was rerouted to remove the fording of the river during the race after Dave reported it was dangerous to the R.D. (I understand he made the crossing)

    I took part in the race this past weekend. It was a great course. Although they may stop doing the hand climb section in future events. The up/downside is that the crew points are all in the first half of the loop. So the back half feels like forever.

      haha, nope no Mexican food the night before this one. Nutrition went much better this time around. Got about 200-300 calories an hour from the start and that worked out really well. Better than Kettle where I only averaged about 100 per hour at the beginning. I talked with Unived after Kettle and we decided to up the calories per hour and it really helped!

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Lloyd, thanks!!! I think this would be a really good race. Logistically, it's pretty easy since it's a looped course. Not a whole lot to worry about for drop bags, 1 or 2 will be fine. The terrain is pretty typical for the midwest, rocks and roots, but very runnable. Especially if you live that close, I think it would be a great first one for you. Let me know what you decide!!

  • @CardenSaraid

    Great effort! I admire your determination. I think I saw you on your second loop at the covered bridge. I plan on going back next year for redemption. The course is gorgeous. Any suggestions on fighting the mental game? I fell pretty bad around mile 8 and couldn't get my head back in the race.

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah sorry to hear that! I think the best thing for the mental game is to visualize the whole race ahead of time, accept that you’re going to suffer and welcoming it to the party when it arrives. Also keep showing up to each section of the course with a fresh outlook. That’s how I think about it. Having a positive mantra helps too. Hopefully that helps, let me know if you have other questions! 👍

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I wish I could but I ended up not traveling to burning river. My ankle was still not ready to go after hurting it at Mohican. I’ll tell that whole story soon. But I know others that were there and most like Mohican more. Burning River has more road sections and is less rugged than mohican, for what it’s worth. I really liked Mohican a lot and will probably be back next year doing it again!

    What would you say are the most affordable watches that can gps track a 100 miler and monitor heart rate?

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John, there is really only one brand that can probably do it on a single charge and that's Coros, but HR data will be sketchy. If you are willing to carry a small usb power bank, it's super easy to charge any other watch halfway through the race. I made the mistake of not bringing one to Mohican, but I have in my other 100's. Most likely you will be moving slower in the night, so charging a watch as you go for 1-2 hours is no big deal. I charged my Suunto 9 halfway through Hallucination 100 and finished with about 30% battery life left at the end. In other races, I've charged my Garmin Fenix, it's not bad if you get a small usb charger. Hope that helps! let me know if you have other questions.
