For those River monster fans on animal planet. There was actually a study on the correlation between earthquakes and catfish in Japan. They put a catfish in a tank, and nearby it was a seismograph to keep check of earthquakes. A Laser was put at a point in the tank, it'd record any time the catfish swam by it. just before and during a quake, the usually lazy catfish would actually become more active and pass by the laser more often. It's actually rather common for animals to know before humans when a natural disaster is coming.
Yes, apparently the catfish were going crazy when the earthquake happened (I'm not sure if they did that before or after). But one of the reasons catfish became associated with earthquakes is that the newspapers printed pictures of tons of catfish thrashing about in the water after the quake hit.
I can’t believe I found one of my two fellow fans of that show here!!! I love that episode. Great show. Weird it appeals to me, a young woman with almost no interest in fishing. But here we are.

I think in Vietnam there is one as well, the legend said that this catfish caused earthquakes too, and the catfish is currently sealed, the head is sealed in Japan, the body China, the tail in Vietnam so it can't create any trouble
Ha! I’m fishing in FF14 right now while I listen to a random mix of your videos and was just wondering how much of this lore went into the Namazu lore in the game, and suddenly they pop up in the video! The Namazu happen to be my favorite beast tribe, yes yes ☺️
Cool. I think I saw an episode of River Monsters with Jeremy Wade when he was in Japan searching for the giant catfish. And they mentioned about the Namazu, or catfish, a fish that was said to be able to predict, and or cause earthquakes. And we get to learn more about stories, and references to the catfish. It. Appreciate learning about it, too.
In Lufia 2 for the SNES there's a portion of the game where a giant catfish is causing a nearby village to suffer from earthquakes. Never understood it as a kid.
When the rice fields are drained in preparation for planting new rice, people in my country celebrate by catching fish in the mud. This is usually done in some states that still practiced traditional method of cultivation. Apart from eels and other freshwater fishes that live in murky water, they also hand catch Catfishes who hid under the wet muddy ground. Unfortunately, the modern planting method makes it hard for them to survive. Catfishes can survive the condition for a few months underground and when the new rice is planted and the field is flooded with water, those who survived emerged from the mud and feast on the parasites and insects in the flooded rice field. The myth of 'Onamazu' must have come from the fact that catfishes can burrow in wet and muddy ground to survive drought. They must have thought that if the fish moved, there would be a big earthquake. I agree that catfishes are good for the farmers, because they help destroy bad insects and parasites and making the water suitable for rice farming.
"If you could create earthquakes, what would you do." I would, like not. I cannot remember any situation in my life that would have been improved with an earthquake.
The Dragon Ball GT one at the end doesn't actually cause earthquake though, but merely detect it by using his whisker. He used it to fool the villager around him to give him tribute.
I'd forgotten the aspect of having a stone dropped on it. Sort of explains O-Namazu's appearance in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, what with the motif of stones falling from the sky, world renewal, and being used as an avatar of Tai Sui Xing Jun.
In the Super Nintendo game Lufia: Rise of the Sinistrals, there is a catfish boss who attacks with earthquake magic. Once defeated, he promises to go back to sleep and not trouble the nearby village any longer with his earthquakes. I had no clue about the folklore that inspired such a boss, but now I do! Cool to know.
@@Linfamy for the Dragon Ball GT episode. Yeah. It is quite nostalgic for me. True. GT is not canon as it was a company add-in to the series because Akira Toriyama just designed SS4. Someday I will have to watch the Supers series.
