RoxiRoxi Me This would be interesting (especially Stalin), but actually I don’t think their characters are terribly complex or unusual. They had specific talents (Bonaparte was a gifted general, Mussolini was very good at motivating the masses, etc.), they were highly focused and competent, but more than anything they were lucky to be living at a time of revolutionary change. Without those external factors no one would ever have heard of them.

They were both exceptional in their roles. Anthony Hopkins really ‘digested’ 😆 Lecter’s character from the novel and brought it to life in the film. His mannerisms, the way he moved even his voice seemed to fit perfectly.
In the series Mads Mikkelsen presented, dare I say, a far more sinister side (if that’s at all possible for Lecter); the way he meticulously prepped, cooked and presented his meals. He also brought a more physically stronger side to Lecter. I was dubious at first about Hannibal being played by anyone else, but now I don’t think I could choose a favourite.
They are different but bring in true aspects of Hannibal to the role they play.
      Magic.

I’d like to make a suggestion to read Hannibal Rising. It goes into his childhood and what initially triggers him to behave the way he does. In fact, even though it was the final and 4th book of the series if you read it first, it is then in chronological order and will give you more insight into his character before you begin Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs and finally Hannibal.

He might as well call himself Dr. Colossus. His feats of intelligence and cunning are more in line with Batman's enemies than they are with any real human being.
Seriously, him and Bane are pretty much on par with each other when you consider their movie portrayals. Both have superior intellects, wear the same masks and display super human strength. Both are charismatic, evil geniuses who speak pedantically without flaw. The difference is that people believe someone like Bane can actually exist. And in reality, Lector has more in common with Magneto than he does with a real serial killer.

Such a great video, Dr. You did a spectacular job with the character analysis. Just my thoughts about a couple of things. I think many people find Lecter fascinating, because he was willing to help Clarice find the serial killer they were looking for, although he wanted something in return for helping her. And Also, I think that Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of him is probably one of the best if not the best acting jobs I've ever seen. In my opinion, if it wasn't him acting in that part, I don't think Lecter would be that fascinating. I've only read the book 'Silence of the Lambs' and seen that movie, and had no idea that Clarice and him lived together, WHOA. You are hilarious I love how you brought up things like "Cons has murdered and eaten clients in the past" and "Jaguars are maintenance nightmares." Hilarious!

But still, he had some psychological background. Lets take his childhood for an example. Remember the horse beating scene? Maybe his first contact with violence.

  • @AraClaire
    @AraClaire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, it is stated that behavioural specialists at the FBI are the ones who stated that Hannibal had tortured animals, but as you learn through the narrator of 'Hannibal Rising', he actually did no such thing. He protected the swans in the lake when he was an orphan, was particularly fond of horses, and even dogs seemed quite comfortable around him and he seemed quite at ease with them too. In the scene where he made his first kill (the butcher who had insulted his aunt), after he was finished, he went to where the butcher had fish tied under the pier. He released the one that was still alive, and he took the one that was dead. In the novel 'Hannibal', he spotted a poucher at a fair, and tracked him later on where he was cleaning a doe he killed out of season, Hannibal killed him with a crossbow and strung him up right next to the deer and presented gutted like the deer. Just deserts, as Hannibal seemed to think.
Hannibal's triggers seemed to be bullies, particularly those bigger than him. The younger ones who would tease him, he would give them his treats (which were rare for them to even get in the orphanage). Those he targeted as an adult were almost always disdainful, arrogant, shallow, and rude. In keeping with his targeting bullies bigger than him, he was totally fine with killing anyone who abused their power and authority to victimize others.
Not only did Lecter have the ability to empathize and to even show compassion...it is revealed that just like Will Graham, he was a hyper-empath, with an edict memory. When Lecter tells Will that the reason he was able to catch him is because they are just alike, Lecter was being completely honest (Lecter always told the truth, in his own way).
I think what Harris was attempting to do was create the type of 'villain turned antihero' that he personally found particularly alluring as well as frightening---a villian that looks very much like Milton's Lucifer--a figure that is the epitome of evil, but is also an anti-hero...someone who we want to see win because they are persuasive in their plight...someone who is far more human than devil. I think he accomplished that, for the most part...but have to put it out there that Brian Fuller with the TV Series really nailed the Hannibal Lecter that Harris was going for.

Aww Doc, your assessment of Lector has just blown my teenage sentimentality for the creepy character of Lecter right out of the water! But you are dead right... he is not a psychopath, I thought he couldn’t fit factor 2 psychopathy because he was too organised, too calm with no apparent impulsivity, and he didn’t seem to lie - he seemed happy to own what he did, and he didn’t engage in a parasitic lifestyle...
I was excited to hear your analysis but as you you went through each point breaking them down I was sitting here thinking “damn, so what IS Hannibal all about then?” And there we have it - human eating super villian it is - mind blown! 🤯🤯
I wonder if Buffalo Bill, the other serial killer in Silence of the Lambs fits the psychopathy profile more clearly...? I read somewhere Harris based the idea for Buffalo Bill on Ed Gein... but who knows...

Great video. You mentioned Darth Vader. Was he already antisocial before he became a Jedi? He was taken from his mother when he was nine. He was raised by Kenobi who had very little compassion for him. He later had a narcissistic partner who excused his behaviour which included genocide of a tribe of sand people. The Jedi did know something was wrong with him but let him command armies during the clone wars because he always won. His tactic in battle was to always attack which was not Jedi like and closer to the behaviour of the Sith. He asked for help because the darkness was tempting him and the Jedi were too arrogant to counsel him properly. He found a father figure in the Emperor who told him whatever he wanted to hear but gave him nothing. Could a good therapist have kept Anakin Skywalker from turning to the dark side? (Provided he wanted help of course. Yeah he may have force choked his therapist)

I was so excited when this came up in my notifications today. I'm a huge fan of the trilogy. I say "trilogy" because I just couldn't get on board with "Hannibal Rising" as a film. I enjoyed the book, though, as well as the TV series.
Another fun fact about the series (that you probably already know) is that the character of Jack Crawford was based on John Douglas, one of the first criminal profilers and creator of the FBI's Criminal Profiling Program. Douglas's books make for an interesting read.
Thank you for another great video!

*No killing and eating clients*. Okay, noted. I'll remember that in my future career endeavors

Great analysis doctor! I much prefer those videos than the drama ones. There is just so much more information here that I can learn from. / Also, a suggestion - children who murder (not only psychopaths but all types, if possible)
