    In some places, the doors are small because of the inquisition. These houses were inhabited by Cristãos-Novos (translated: New Christians). These were jews who converted to catholicism, but kept being jew in secret. The doors were small for two reasons: first, so that the inquisitors had to "bow" everytime they entered those houses. Secondly, because the inquisitors couldn't ram the doors with horses, as they usually did when they wanted to investigate someone's house.

    It's not necessarily that Portugal has a lot of diversity, but that other places mimic Portugal. The first European to go past the Cape is Good Hope was a Portuguese, and we were the first country to start settling in Cape Town and Zimbabwe, the British and Dutch only came after. So many other countries have Portuguese influence in them, but people don't know because either the Brits are stuck up brats and erase the history of Portuguese sailors and navy, or people think it was the Spanish who discovered the places, because we have similar names.

    I love Sesimbra, my childhood vacations were there, great memories. By the way you really need to have dinner there, they know how to cook fish like nobody! Try "espadarte" or "caldeirada de marisco" ;)

    I love Sesimbra, brings back so many childhood memories of when my parents took me there for a whole month in vacations for some years! I still visit whenever I can :)
    Back in the 70s and 80s you could see a lot of fishermen mending their fishing nets in the beach and in the sidewalk next to it, with their 'Aiolas' (fishing boats) on the sand. Today that pictoresque side is gone, as they are all moved to the Lota (where they collect and sell fish at auctions) in the far north side of Sesimbra.

    I think the doors are small simply because the average height of people in the past was much lower than today (and that house sure looked like it was old, probably much more than 100 years old, although it was clearly refurbished in the meantime, but structural things like doors are difficult to change). From 1914 to 2014, the average height of the portuguese went from 159cm to 173cm (and that's the average - probably among the poor people, like in fishermen towns, they had less than 159cm). In the same period, comparing with the whole world, the portuguese were the 9th people that grew more in height.

  • @Brunbrown

    Doors and windows were smaller for various reasons. Cheaper and easier to build, less cold to enter in the house, some are from a time were there were no affordable glass, people were smaller and all was build without extra inches to use, In the doors, sometimes the streets are renewed and with new pavemet, the street level arise, old house entrances become a little burried.

    Don't know if its the case but you'll see those small doors in many villages, they are from inquisition time. With small doors the inquisitors couldn't enter with the horses and were forced to bend over.

    Very good video as always. Sesimbra is beautiful now and in Spring but terrible in the Summer....too crowded,no place in the restaurants and no place to park your car.. Try to go there and eat "Caldeirada" a typical portuguese meal with fish in a beautiful sunny January day. Congratulations.

    Love your vblogs! I started watching them in preparation for my visit next week, coming from the US, and my friend is coming from England. Neither of us has been to Portugal before and your vblogs have been very informative - as well as interesting, humorous, and downright funny! They've even inspired me to maybe try and make some interesting videos while there in Lisbon. We have a place waiting for us in the Mouraria/Alfama area - maybe we will "bump" into you two!

    I've once rented one of the apartments on top of the road, that you can see from the castle on the other side, when you drive direction Setubal. We had cockroaches, yaik, they only came out at night when it was dark. Anyway it is a nice place if you like eating fish. Try to google old pictures of the beach then you can see huge long silver fish that they sold on the beach.

    The reason is, those Traditional Portuguese houses were build many years ago(about 100 years) , and generally, people in those times, were smaller in height.I believe that's the reason.

    ohh come on, pasteis de nata? thats in lisbon... in sesimbra u have to try "farinha torrada" (only made in sesimbra) originaly was a fisherman's snack. it was like an energy bar, when the fishermen went to the sea, they took a lot of it. moreover it doesn't spoil, so it was perfect for spending weeks on the high seas

      9:42 I have an apartment in the building you see when Amalie says "It's beautiful!", with a balcony facing the sea (hint, hint)
      This part (west side) is called "Praia do Ouro" (Gold Beach); the eastern part, with that humongous building, is called "Praia da Califórmia", I have no idea why.

  • @joanarodrigues1047

    In religious buildings the doors are smaller because that way you need to bow as you enter but i guess the door in sesimbra is just smaller because of the height of the people back then

  • @MrHHVV
    @MrHHVV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should get via verde, its inexpensive and has a lot of advantages, like forgetting to pay 15cents of scuts and 3 months later a bill coming of 15€ due to fines.
    Hope you have been paying the scuts, otherwise you are screwed.
    Oh, and dont make the mistake of calling the scuts office, you will pay more for the phone call than the scuts it self, might as well just pay them even if you think it was a mistake.

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What are scuts? We pay everytime we drive through these booths.

    • @MrHHVV
      @MrHHVV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, you are screwed.. Scuts exist in certain roads, you will see a board before passing through them with the payment for each type of car, but you will not pass by a both just through Metal bars around the road with lots of small loking radars that take note of your licence plate.
      After that you have to go to either fisically to the postal office to pay them, or go online, just do a search for "ctt pagar scuts" it will take you to the ctt site where you can search for sctus attributed to your licence plate.
      The via verde pays all of that automatically.
      After a few days thought you can no longer pay the scuts on the postal office and it will go to your home with fines to pay after 2-3 months.

    • @MrHHVV
      @MrHHVV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Other thing if you passed by a scut today for instance, the ability to pay it will only be available past 3-4days on the postal office, and you will have another 3-4days to pay them. After that, as i said you will no longer be able to pay them and the bill will go to your home with huge fines added to it.

    I owned a BMW for 4 years. The car itself was nice but the after-sales was so bad that I promised to myself that I'd never, ever, own one again. I suffered constant delays for lack of parts in stock, almost no maintenance was done right the first time. The people from the service were really nice and friendly, but the service itself was unprofessional. I had owned an Audi before the BMW, and Audi had the best after-sales service I ever saw. The change to BMW was a shock to me. BMW never again.

If so, why aren't all of the buildings from that period and older, that is, the majority of the existent buildings including the Jeronimos Monastery, the buildings in Lisbon built after the 1775 earthquake, and the very vast majority of houses built throughout the country, showing doors of that size?!What a load of crap!!!

    Hello how are you? I think very well as I have seen so far. Yes that´s true that cost part is amazing and as you also know that beaches there are very beautiful and the water very hot in the summer. Now another thing not so well like you said about your car or the car workshop. I´m going to say one thing: you don´t wait that for being a car workshop from BMW Audi or Mercedes your car wil be better fix than in other workshop without brand. So what can we do? Next time when you need to fix your car talk to me or call me and i tell you and show you my personal car mechanic, actually is a brand representative of Hyundai. He is a wonderful and honest guy and is my friend and don´t go to cheat you for sure that i can ensure you. Hey listen to this I'm not kidding this my friends are pretty good really and only this way you can solve your car problems that is with true and honest guys. Unfortunately that's how it works here in Portugal now. See you later. Até logo.
