    As a teen I used to go to Castelo de Sao Jorge just about every other day, and take a different path each time. It was also a place where older kids would go to "namorar." Entrance was free. Walking from Rossio all the way to Castelo is a great work out and it's free.

    really good video, just a couple of things to add which might be useful: pickpockets are mostly active in the tram line 28 (since always, it's not a recent thing: i'm now 40, and I remember taking the tram when I was 10 and watching a guy being caught while pickpocketing a tourist). Also, while visiting Castelo de Sao Jorge you'll pay half fee if you're up to 25 years old and get a €2.5 discount if you're above 65, if you have kids less than 12 it's free for them, and if you can prove that you have residency in Lisbon (even if you're not Portuguese), it's also free, regardless of age - bring a document to prove residency. you can also skip the queue if you buy your tickets online. Also, Mercado da Ribeira used to be a really good hub for great food but everything there now is super expensive and the quality went down drastically, so it basically became a tourist trap. It's also great that you mentioned Elevador de Santa Justa - it was originally made as an everyday public transit system such as all funiculars and trams which became tourist attractions, but it's by far the most overrated tourist spot in Lisbon, the queue is simply not worth it, and walking up Rua Garrett into Carmo is way more interesting than getting in the elevator.

    Hello! I'm a tuk tuk driver in Lisbon! I agree it's a high price, but you have to consider it's not supposed to be a taxi. It's for the experience of going on a tuk tuk. While I understand not every driver will do this, I try to complement a small trip like that with some history and a pretty view along the way, to make it worthwhile.
    We do mostly tours, and even then I'd pick my driver wisely. It's truly a great way to see the city and get an introduction, but there's definitely a bunch of drivers on the rowdier side, with little to no historic knowledge, that will rip you off on the price and bullshit you along the ride lol
    But if you pick the right ones it's undoubtedly a great sightseeing trip

    One thing you’re right, Portugal is not Thailand. And it’s also not your probably very inflated economy. So.. when you do not feel that it’s a fair price (which I find it quite insulting, mentioning something like that, when you the ones always saying “Portugal is so cheap”), you can just walk away.
    Portugal is a touristic country at the moment, it’s economy will follow along. You better get used to it 👍

    Once I was leaving São Bento train station in Porto with my girlfriend (she's native Portuguese) when I was approached by a man who was trying to sell me hashish. Although I am Brazilian and do fluently speak Portuguese, he asked me in English probably thinking I was a tourist.
    I've been living in Portugal for more or less 1 year and 4 months. I lived 21 years in Brazil, a pretty violent country with a deep drug problem, but this situation had NEVER happened to me before even there.

    I disagree with a lot in this video.
    1. tuk tuk is a FUN way to move in town, it's not Thailand. Obviously if you just want to go from A to B, get a Uber.
    2. The guys helping to park are just underserved people trying to make some income, they won't do ANYTHING bag to your car.
    3. The beer you were drinking is a pint, for 4,80€ is quite normal. Of course that area is expensive, but still within the range.
    4. The musician - OH BOY - the guys are just trying to encourage people to TIP! You're monetizing you video exhibiting him and ridiculing him while they were just making money out of tips. There's no SCAM on it.
    One thing is certain, I've watched your videos and it really feels like you thing everyone is trying to get something from you, when actually is quite the opposite.
    The only true scam here is the fake drugs, but once again: IT'S ILEGAL, DEAL WITH IT when committing the crime of buying.

    Had a really obnoxious scammer in Lisbon that was drunk and was trying to sell cups of alcohol from a fancy bottle that he was carrying. I told him I wasn't interested and he walked off then circled back and started following me, so I walked into a small souvenir shop expecting that he wouldn't want the attention, but he followed me inside trying to bump into me and take my phone, but between me pushing him away and the store owner yelling at him that she was calling the police, he took off. The expensive ATMs are disgusting since there are probably some pretty high level government and business people in on it to scam tourists and it's across Europe.

    I worked as a tuk tuk driver some years ago, and Tuk tuks in Lisbon ARE NOT TAXIS, they are mainly tour guides, as i was. Its a bit presumptuous to assume it's a rip off right of the bat without giving any information about the tours provided, as well as reference values across europe for example. In Paris you pay 50€ minimum for any distance (1 to 4), and the 1h tour is 130€ contrasting to the 70/80€ per hour here in Lisbon. I advise you to search the prices online if you think you are being ripped off. You will come to the conclusion you might've been a bit silly... Lastly, i dare you to go for a tuk tuk tour in Lisbon with One of the drivers of my choosing. You will quickly change your narrow opinion right away. Cheers

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are missing the point. He wanted 15€ for a 4 minute drive. The rip-off is when tuktuks pretend to be taxis and they do that a lot. And most people are like “okay” with the price because they dont know the city and how long their destination is from the current spot. That’s why it’s a trap and a rip-off. The price of 15€ is based on the assumption that customer doesn’t know the city at all, which is probably the case most of the times.

    Being born in Lisbon and being myself a guide since the day I was 18, I think you are just over generalizing the tuk-tuks.
    Tuk-tuks in Lisbon are mainly used as a "guide service" and not as a "taxi service".
    I have drived a tuk-tuk years ago to show my city to the ones who visit us and still today I've got people sending me photos of their experience, asking me if I still do it because their friends/family are visiting Lisbon and commonly if they come back they contact me because they want to do it again.
    Tuk-tuks were not invented in Lisbon, absolutely correct.
    Nevertheless, the car wasn't as well, neither the motorcicle, the boat, the subway, the bus, the bycicle, the airplane and even the so "typical trams" of Lisbon that were in fact bought to the city of San Francisco (U.S.) in the second half of the 19th century.
    When you look to the history of transports and see the ones that have sticked around, it's because there was a demand to be fullfiled.
    Tuk-tuks have been now in Lisbon for more than a decade and they'll probably be around for many more because they are in fact a great way to see and explore this amazing city.
    It's very sad that you talk this way about this kind of service and don't make things more clear.

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      We are not disputing the fact that it is a fun way to get around the city. We are merely pointing out the blatant rip-offs, when inquiring about a trip from A to B. When it's 15€ for a four minute ride, it's a rip-off. And even more so if we were 3 or 4 people, as the price is higher when more people. So imagine paying 30€ for four people from Chiado to Hard Rock. I swear the TukTuks could redeem themselves if there prices were more competitive. Their business is very similar to the taxis. They rather sit around and wait for someone to pay their price than doing 3 trips in the same time span at a lower price and probably even earning more. If it was 6-7€ from Chiado to Hard Rock. Cool. Seems fair. But that just isn't the case. I know their main business is tours, but they don't profile themselves like that when you ask them how much it is to go from A to B.

      I choose Lisboa over London because weather is nicer 9 months of the year (mid summer too hot). Lisboa is also a lot safer - many are moving away of london due to violent robberies there.
      But I agree Lisboa is way too expensive today. I get lunch cheaper in Helsinki even the wages are 4x higher compared to Portugal. That is one kind of robbery also.

    It's capitalism. Who opens a restaurant in a historic area, or buys the property, or rents it, and in both cases, for a large amount of money, as it is more expensive because there are many tourists. If you see a restaurant where the majority are not Portuguese, avoid it, or expect to pay a lot, risking even poor service. As for the Castle of São Jorge, which just happens to be the ruins of the genesis of the city of Lisbon, and which dates back way before Christ, and which several civilizations located and disputed among themselves over it, if for 15€ it already has the affluence that it has, imagine if it were cheaper. They would destroy the castle. Think about it. It is your very welcome presence that raises prices.

    Portugal biggest income right now is tourism to the point they are alway trying to kick out residents of big tourist places like Lisbon just to build more hotels.
    Most of the stuf you can buy or pay in this places is highly expensive just to make a few bucks of the un-informed tourist visiting and that also shows in crime, most pickpocketers or assaults happen in this tourist spots because they know victims mostly don't know how to call for help or they can't stay in the country if they get arrested and the case will be dismissed, its really fucked up.
    If you want to visit I would suggest study a bit make a good plan of spots to visit, try to meet a local online and ask them for suggestions. Theres a lot of beautiful citys or villages that aren't tourist spots you just need to know them.

    The castelo de São Jorge, well, I have been there a few years ago and I don’t know why it is called castelo, it is more like a “forte” than a castelo. Yes, the views are epic, but the entry is a bit steep. I know the Portuguese have the idea that everything has to be free but a the end of the day these places need to be cleaned and looked after. I guess €5 would be more appropriate. Nice video by the way.

      We do too :) it is only fair. But ofc people should give them some money if they are enjoying their music.

Also, before visiting a museum, make sure it's a legit museum and not just an expensive cash grabber like the "museu dos coches". Don't get me wrong, museu dos coches worths the money if you're really into old horse coaches, but if you're not, spend the 10€ elsewhere because you'll get bored

      @STAY CLASSY VLOG yes. You are paying for THE EXPERIENCE. It's a tourist vehicle, not a taxi! You are not in Thailand. Same with the lift, people ride it for the experience. Going to the cue to tell people they don't need to ride it is simply ridiculous. "You're at the Eifel Tower, going to the top is a scam... you just need to see it from the ground". That's how you sound

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I get that it’s more expensive than an average taxi, but there has to be a cap on how high it can get. At least for it to make sense as a mode of transportation. It may not be a taxi, but they certainly act like they are. Their longer tours of one hour is usually more fair at around 60€, but they rarely market that when we approach.

    • @joenandamalie
      @joenandamalie  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I guess we have different ideas of what an experience is. Taking the elevator to the top and seeing a view that you can get from numerous other viewpoints doesn’t constitute an experience. At least not a great one 😅. The comparison with the Eiffel Tower isn’t good. If we could take an elevator 300m above Lisbon we would be down for it even with a long queue! 😊
