Hi Jess your plot looks lovely organised and tidy. Our plot everything is growing together in beds with no sides polyculture we decided this year no netting no hoops no feed well apart from comfrey and no insecticides slug pellets etc. we have had a little slug and snail damage no real caterpillars yet. Our biggest worry is blight. We have flowers self set growing everywhere for pollinators etc. I think this works to keep a good balance. Birds were our biggest threat fledgling thrushes and sparrows. It was a risk but glad we took the risk and the plot is a little past it’s best now but it looked amazing in July even tho it was wet. We will carry on like this I think. Let nature take its course. But you have a really amazing looking plot with masses of successes

I have exactly same issue with caterpillars and slugs here, in Somerset. I go to my little garden every day to collect these little beasts, but they still managed to destroy all my broccolies. Also, slugs and woodlice made me to pull out the courgette plant just because I lost hope to see grown up courgette-as soon the flowers are finished blooming the wood lice gets inside a baby courgette and eats it from inside 😢

Thank you for this video! I planted carrots after pulling potatoes and they’re popping up quickly. Tomatoes and eggplants are starting to look rough, but I’ve been making soup almost daily to freeze for winter. Q - Why didn’t you take off the bubble wrap in the greenhouse this summer? I thought it was for winter insulation. Yes, pest in the greenhouse! I pulled all mine out in June when flea bottles got inside but now I’m cleaning it up to move my strawberries inside for the winter.

I grow potatoes in the flex builders tubs, from Aldi and lidl are cheap. No digging and forking them, tip out ,I use a builders cement mixing tray, Yes I was a builder, no spuds growing in the wrong place anymore. 1st early's just finished, were amazing, now starting 2nds and main crop to follow. Got about 15/16 tubs.and going to get some more when they get them in again. Have copied you bean arch idea, working really well, had runners for a good week or so and the french beans have been really good as well.We do not talk about the onions, but I have sow some onion seed and they are now in the vacated potato tubs, this is an experiment to see what happens/ act of desperation , they will go in the greenhouse when it gets cold. Had the same problem with caterpillers as you with the cabbage and caulies but seem to have got rid of them now. Your positive thinking keeps me going when it all goes wrong. Thank you muchly. A.

courgettes are very moderate for me this year, everything seems one month advanced here in NW Ireland. Raspberries are finished, poor harvest, not sure should I blame the birds entirely. Have also been picking off small cabbage white caterpillars from kale. Notably absent for some years now are the large cabbage whites, the ones with the yellow and black markings, its strange, they used to devour my nasturtiums and the hens refused to eat them! Tomatoes are coming on nicely but I have no luck with bush tomatoes, they are laden, but plants rot away quickly

Hi Jess, first of all, I'm sorry to say but I'm pleased that you had some disasters- means I'm not the only one 😂 Re slugs etc - I saw someone placing empty bowls of sort under the legs of the potting table, fill bowls with water - so that hopefully the slugs getting demised before they have a chance to climb up the table legs. I'll be trying that out next year. I mean, why do these blighters have to be so greedy and eat all the food plants? I can handle some damage but not all or most of the plants being nibbled away🙄🍅🥦🧄

8m feeling your greenhouse pains regarding your seedlings and slug damage.
Have you heard of WD-40? I don't know if it's sold in the UK but there may be a similar product or sold under a different name. But this is listed on their website because it has so many uses:
    "Protection from Slugs or Snails
Are you sick and tired of seeing your plants ruined by snails and slugs? The simple solution to the problem is to spray WD-40 on the outside of the pot.
Snails, slugs, and bugs hate this stuff and they will stay far away from your beautiful plants. And since the material is waterproof, it will remain on the surface even if it rains."
    Good luck!!

Then when planting out, I use a bulb planter to form the planting hole. Again, planting them well deep. Seems to work very well. Had some exceptional brassicas. Happy gardening.

This winter visit charity chops buy voile panels or net curtains and cut some plastic water pipe to the required length then hem the ends .slude the fabric over your plastic pipe and then push into the soil over your seedlings to prevent cabbage whites getting to your leafy greens.sprinkle coffee grounds around the pots of seedlings as this dispatches slugs and snails efficiently too .

I am in the Czech Republic, and have the opposite problem - I can swim in tomatoes but no courgettes - all have white mold on their leaves and grow ever so slowly. Well, that´s life. Q&A - why there´s bubble wrap still in your greenhouse, I get it during winter but would think it must create double heat/condense in summer months, maybe that´s the reason for all pests in there ? Hello Jessie does it make any difference to a pumpkin if the flower falls off after it is pollinated. Your airplane dance in this video was very nice and cheerful. And also how plays the pianio in your videos it is very calming music. Thanks.

Q n A - not had great harvests of Bell Peppers over last couple of years (but I can grow Chillies like a champ). What variety would you recommend for next year please Jessie?

Hey Jess- saw the large fig you grew in last video. Was wondering what variety of fig that was? Our 2 fig trees don’t grow figs even half that size.

I got Lilia spring onions a few month ago due to you mentioning them, doing ok so far and 1 probably decent size to eat but I think they're restricted being in one of those long windowsill cell trays. Caterpillars seem to love my Lazio F1 spinach, Salvias and Hurst Green shaft pea leaves. All in greenhouse too like others are complaining about 😢

Hi Jessie, we had terrible problems with caterpillars last year, stripped the kale overnight. This year hardly any cabbage whites, but everything is covered!!! Our chickens wont even eat the caterpillars (I think they're fussy chickens lol) and they smell really horrible too. Perhaps it's your bad year and next year will be better!! I had all my zinnias in the greenhouse eaten to nothing and the cosmos too, but that was teeny tiny slugs. Little buggers.

Our courgette plants have been pants...was goin' on Jessie? However, for the first year we are super abundant in cucumbers. The beans are loving the cooler temps too. Just need some sun to ripen the San Marzano beasts outside 🙄
