  • AC wont turn on and The Most Common Fix. Is your inside fan working but the unit outside not turning on? There's a very good chance that you have a blown capacitor. Often times you will hear the outside unit buzz for a few seconds as if trying to start and then stops. In this video I show you how to locate, read the rating, replace, and measure the dual capacitor. This is the most common air conditioner repair. BUT.. Keep in mind that this is not a fix it all repair. Its common, but there could be many other things that can go wrong. Let me know in the comments below if you have a problematic AC. I will try to walk you through it ;)

    Thank you very very much! I've called AC guy and told him the symptoms of my a.c and this guy told me my a.c compressor is locked and need to change the whole unit will be better. He told me $4500. Man!, I've freaked out and followed your video and fixed it by my self. It was capacitor, it looked fat on the top so I called many HVAC supplies because a lot this companies only sell to licensed contractors. I've just paid $33 and works like champ. 4 years late but this video is timeless. Another satisfied TH-cam viewer. Our AC stopped working yesterday. House got up to 90! We were worried we would have to wait until Monday to call for service and then they would probably be so busy. We’d have to wait longer. Watched this video. Signs led to the capacitor. Went to Ace and picked one up for $18. We are back in business. Yeah! 🥶 💨

    This 100% worked the very first time. Last night was sitting outside to let the dogs out and I noticed my A/C kicked on but I heard a buzz and the fan didn’t turn on. Immediately got my attention and googled it and found this video and it gave me positive vibes to tackle the issue on my own. Turned the A/C off and disconnected it, opened her up, took a picture of the part and found similar part on google. Found the part I was looking for, ran up to Ace and bought it. Put it in and about 5-10 minutes later turned everything on and it cycled over. Been over an hour and back to normal. Still working! Wahoo!!! Thanks bud!

    I used your troubleshooting steps, narrowed it down to the capacitor (complete with the bulged top), found a part locally and did the replacement with the video instructions. My A/C dropped on a hot weekend and all my estimate calls for emergency service were at least $300. I took care of this repair on my own for $25 in parts that same day and my A/C sprang to life. THANK YOU!!!!!

    • @101perspective
      @101perspective 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I couldn't believe how easy and cheap it was to fix this. The local companies here wanted about $300 also... and I already knew what needed to be replaced. OH, and I would have to pay for the part on top of that. And the part they had was going to be like $40. I got one myself for like $12. At that price I went ahead and got a spare as well. I was expecting to have to do soldering or something else complicated to replace this. Nope, just like the video shows, it's super easy.

      @@TheAndriabeshir I got my part on Amazon. The part was made in China but the listing showed it shipping from Amazon and was being sold by a states side company. I got it in just a few days.
      If you don't trust that process, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc, sells them also... at a slightly higher price. And you will most likely have to buy them from their online store and have them shipped.
      Btw, even the HVAC company said they would have to order the part if I decided to go with them.
      All of that said, you might check the company names/addresses on Amazon. One of them might be near you and they might have an actual brick and mortar store you could visit.

They will sell to a normal customer. What I mean, if your not an AC and Heating contractor, many specialty stores will not sell to you. Grainger will and help you get the right components. You just need the original component part numbers. That info is usually on the components. Hope this helps?

    Proper method for ANYONE trying to DIY is if you are not mechanically and electrically inclined, please leave this to a friend who is or a professional. ALWAYS trip circuit breakers on the whole system to prevent shock, damage to the equipment, and to prevent starting a fire in your home.
    That being said, this isn't hard to do and a simple fix. Thanks for the video; at work on mechanical and electrical stuff for a long time, however you can't know how every system works. I'm learning about it home air conditioning on the fly now since my system is really old.
    Also of note, we just got forced to use 410 for refrigerant and word from the AC repair guys is that we have another refrigerant going to be required in about two or three years, maybe a little more. Thank you greatly to the EPA as always. What a racket everybody's got going anymore.

    So, yes. I was able to fix my AC today. Thankfully I was able to find the CAP at the local electric motor repair shop near me. Nice to know this, because some of the local HVAC supply houses do not make it easy for homeowners to buy from them. They protect their licensed customers. The guy at the electric motor place was more than willing to help me, and supplied me with a capacitor rated for higher voltage, explaining that it is better insulated, and that it would work just fine. Orange wire was HERM, Purple, was the Compressor, and brown was the fan. I snapped a photo before hand, which was quite helpful. It was a 90 degree day today, so it was a life-saver. The hardest part about this job was finding the part the same-day. As soon as I got the part, it took 5 minutes to install. I noticed that my unit had an additional kick starter capacitor installed on it. I took it off, since there was no way to test it. I figure if I need to add one of those later on, I will if and when I need one.

Turns out that there is a battery (CR2023) on the circuit board that the manuals don't mention (hmm?), in addition to the three AAA batteries they tell you to change. A new battery fixed the thermostat. AC still not coming on, but this post saved the day. I bought the capacitor from local ACE hardware store for $17 and AC is humming happily. Thank you for this video. Our AC went out after a long hot summer, right before what looks like the final 90° day of the year. I'm not handy, but we're broke and then some (thanks to my wife's disability, which makes it unsafe for her to work with Covid out there). Rather than make a weekend after-hours service call, I did some googling of the symptoms, found your video, and ordered a capacitor for $13 from Amazon. It came today. I took the old one out, popped the new unit in, and voila! No more hot days on the horizon, but we're ready for next summer. And I plan to order a backup capacitor to have one on hand for next time. Thanks for helping me keep a few hundred bucks in the bank. Much appreciated.
