I was genuinely depressed by the ending to Theros... The fact that Elspeth, after enduring so much, is murdered, and bleeds out and dies alone. She even tried to give her life for Daxos's, but Erebos denied her even that, by sending him back as a Returned, endlessly searching for her. The fact that she never gets to be happy, really gets me. It's even worse that she gets SO close, to being at peace, with Daxos on Theros. I guess it fits with the whole Greek Tragedy theme... RIP Elspeth and Daxos ;-;
He is literally the commander of my favorite deck. Many "stronger" black legendaries have come and they all fall in the 99 under Erebos. P.S. I'm talking about the God of the Dead and not the Bleak Hearted. hahahah
I prefer Kruphix. In lore he was practically the older of all the gods and even was able to limit all his brothers precense in the mortal world. He also was the only one who discovered the existence of other planes.
Darth Fall that isn't a characteristic of white, its actually a characteristic of black. Of course personalities aren't strictly tied to the color wheel the way types of magic are, if they were storytelling would be boring.
Urbarask Praetor It's that murky grey area where two opposing colors have a similarity. Black is prideful as a result of only caring about themselves. White pride, however, stems from their belief that *they* are right and just about anything, and anyone who dissents in a problem. Look at Bant! It had no Black mana, but everyone was still dedicated to winning more glory.
This is the only version of the Journey into Nyx trailer that has the parts with the events on Mirrodin in it, Karn and Elesh fade in and out and Koth fades in and out and Elspeth's mask. I don't know why they took those parts out
+Christian Munso Because at the time of the unveilig of the trailers, the set hadn't been released yet. Therefor nobody knew the lore of the new set either. The parts where Karn, Koth and the others fade in and out would have spoiled the story of the set.
Oh ok, thanks, I was wondering why they didn't keep those parts in, they make the trailer have more impact but yea I can see why they took them out now, thanks :D
When the dead come to the underworld in Theros, they are given the chance to return to the world of the living if they put on a golden mask, but doing so makes them loose most of their memories. That mask is for Elspeth (the "eyes" being shaped after the hilt of Godsend), and now her choice is whether or not she will wear it.
Actually when the dead puts the mask they lose their soul and memories (those become beings like ghosts) and then they can come out of Erebos dominion with a zombie body and the golden mask but without memories of their past selfs. It happened to Daxos after hin died by Xenagos manipulation of Elspeth. After Daxos left the underworld he (zombie) started to look out for his eidolon (basicaly his soul with memories that got splited after he became a zombie ) it is implied that if the zombie finds the eidolon they can ressurect and return to their former selfs.
you know, for as much effort is put into the new cinematic trailers and how, they really really really look awesome, but I do like the style of these old ones too where you could literally tell "oh there is this card, oh that looks epic, I'd love to play that in particular" and it just kind of gave you a better immersion into the game you could hold the actual thing in hand :D Both ways of doing trailers are great imo :)
Ajani makes a big deal that the gods of Theros came into being because people believed in them. I think after she destroyed Xenagos and saved all of Nyx, rumors of her ascension may be enough to bring her back. We just need to get someone to go between the pillars with Heliod so she can take his seat.
Sadly for Ajani, he's only half-right. They're powered up by faith and belief, but Kruphix outright says they came into being due to concepts, rather than belief (e.g. Erebos came into being when the first thing died, Kruphix when the first being asked 'why' etc.).
@@MrRed424 Unsure. All we know of Heliod is that he was once human and likely the Planeswalker Heliud. But as Kruphix confirms, Theros can retroactively alter history based on legends, so even though he basically did was Xenagos did, the planes history was altered so he really did banish Erebos to the underworld at the dawn of time etc.
You know what would be dope? Now that Elspeth is free from all mortal constraints holding her back, and now that Erebos has seen into Elspeth's mind and all of the horror that is phyrexia, it would be cool to see an Elspeth lead Theros's defense against invading phyrexians. Like someone as deadset on her goal (defeating phyrexia) as Elesh Norn would be leading masses of warriors against eachother. That would be pretty dope to see.
Seeing as Elspeth's return as been confirmed, and how Phyrexia has only been hinted at in the past couple of years, we might actually see the return of both soon. Don't know if they're going to be related though, but I dig that theory
First Venser and now her too?!Elspeth was one of my favorite planeswalkers. As much as I'd like to see a returned or undead Elspeth, I don't think it'll happen. Heliod done goofed. I want vengeance! I need closure! Down with the gods!
It is proven that if Mark Rosewater likes a planeswalker they will die. First Venser and now Elspeth, we just need one more to confirm the story department has a vendetta against him.
Or, since Heliod has something like zero devotion from the people, and Elspeth has the adoration of millions, if not billions, she might ascend into godhood and replace Heliod entirely.
Azraelean But Elspeth's biggest champion was the woman writing the novels for this block. She loves her. I could be wrong but I'm not sure Rosewater's opinion on Elspeth was positive or negative.
Having to have fought with Elspeth in the Phyrexia block where she lost the war and her friends. Now this...this was so heart wrenching for me to watch this trailer. As the climatic music got louder the harder it was for me to not shed tears for such a hero with a sad tragic backstory. Elspeth you will always be loved and remembered
2019 and still think this was one of the best storylines in Magic of the past 5-6 years. Hope they return with elspeth as a mais storyline hero and with Xenagos (maybe with nyx body parts) as a villain, and stop the gatewatch non sense.
Except the fans, who don't want to see Elspeth as a mindless pawn to the Zombie god. I could, however, see Erebos offering Elspeth a deal, something along the lines of "How would you like to destroy the traitorous sun god and get your life back? Yes, you say? Here's what you have to do..........." While I really wouldn't trust Erebos completely, he's nicer than Heliod at this point. And although Heliod IS a prick, his existence serves a purpose, unlike Xenagos.
Has there been any other "Reels" such as this for previous editions of Magic? I have seen this clip more than a dozen times by now, and would love to see a similar clip. :)
the end is when elspeth kills xenagos (the flash of light) and that caused her 'death' as well. the end of the 'watcher' hallway is the broken "Godsend" sitting before elspeths mask, and it lighting up is probably her being resurected via a god to do his will this time.
Out of the entire video only the last part can be considered as some sort of a spoiler. Karn, Koth, Elesh are just the past of what Elspeth has gone through. I wonder how long, if, we will see resurection of Elspeth and what form will that take. Theros overall a great block and Wizards done a good job with storyline. However, after all the blocks we had in last couple of years, I wonder when will we return to Dominaria. Next block won't be that but it would be about time
The last part really got me thinking, and i have a theory: Elspeth slew Xenagos, so he's probably in the underworld, and then Heliod kills Elspeth, so she's in the underworld. My guess is that they fight or something like that in the underworld, which would make a good storyline for a duel deck (as you know duel decks in the spring have a format of planeswalker vs. planeswalker from the last block and are somehow part of the story line. Take Jace vs. Vraska for example. In Jace vs Vraska, Vraska "tests" Jace or something like that since he recently became guildpact). The outcome would probably be that Elspeth permanently kills Xenagos (where ya gonna go after the underworld?) and Erebos takes Xenagos' spark (his "prize"). Erebos probably kills Heliod with his power from the spark, and makes himself the center of the Theros pantheon. Now like most black planeswalkers (except Bolas of course), they may seem really evil at first, but if you read their lore, they are acually trying to protect others (Sorin, even though he really didn't seem evil as much) or redeem themselves (liliana). I'm gonna guess that Erebos devised this plan to protect his plane from evil, like the phyrexians or Bolas. Tell me what you think.
Last I knew, In RTR, Gideon Jura was in Ravnica looking for ways to combat the Eldrazi, and Kiora happens to have come from Zendikar, where the Eldrazi were recently let loose. Am I the only one predicting either another set in Zendikar, or one featuring the Eldrazi assaulting a new plane in the next couple years?
099Nitro The praetors are only pieces on the Grand Evolution they can be recycled after they are destroyed. But in the end everyone submits under the power of the oil.
So... after reading the books and some more of the lore I understand that if you "die" and go to the underworld your technically not dead, since Pharika grants eternal sleep not Erebos, my question would be who kept Elspeth's spark her body or eidolon?
I don't think that's the case. Erebos went and claimed his prize. Despite there being returned on theros, I don't think we're going to see a zombie Elspeth. Thinking back on what he said, he mentioned how a hero never truly dies, that her spirit lives on. The hilt of her weapon glows at the end so I think that, while she herself may be dead, in the future we'll see enchantments pertaining to her memory, we'll see some lore about her spirit living on in others. I never liked Elspeth a whole lot, but god damn do I feel bad for her.
I really hope we don't. While it would make sense, her entire character was about purity and peace, its all she wanted in life. I might be too sentimental, but I'd really hate to see her become that which she hates most. Her heart was broken when Bant was taken over. Then she had to fight the phyrexians again, her childhood demons, and now this shit. I hope she gets her eternal rest. (I am such a fucking nerd when it comes to mtg lore)
Well, at least we can take comfort in the fact that Erebos will treat Elspeth better than Heliod ever did for however long she'll stay in the Underworld.
I really just wish we got to see more of the Underworld in the cards. Other than that, wonder what's gonna happen to Elspeth from here on out? White/Black Returned Elspeth Planeswalker card?
***** could be. But it is a sad story abort Elspeth. But it will keep me interested, what happens next. My bet is that Elspeth will return. But as pawn of Erobos. Then later in the Block she will be released, maybe by Ajani, and take her revenge on Heliod and Erobos!!!
At 3:14 we get a glimpse of Hero's Downfall. For what the card itself portrays, the fact that the soldier just gets walked over is pretty anticlimactic.
+Ben Peterson Sincere and Really Alluring Voice: 3 cost instant spell: Tap all target opponent's nonland permanents, they do not untap during their next untap step.
Horváth Bence all three point towards elspeth. karn and norn represents elspeth's involvement in new Phyrexia. the one with koth and Daxos (elspeth's love interest) shows those she worked with and betrayed or abandoned and the last just shows that elspeth is now a returned
Has anyone noticed that Heliod has two very familiar looking horns on his head? Let's put on our thinking caps and remember who would want a powerful planeswalker like Elspeth dead, and would be able to manipulate a god into doing so.
I don't think Heliod knew about planeswalkers before Elspeth and Xenagos, so meeting a non-Theros dragon would have been suspicious for him. Although it would be cool if Bolas had been manipulating him without Heliod knowing about it (especially because it's so easy). I just don't take the horns as a sign. I believe it's just made to look like a stag. See the similarity in Heliod's Emissary's.
Do you mean Nicol Bolas? YAY i won! Gimme a cookie! Nah, i don't think so. I think they're taking a break from Nicol Bolas, since he's been in what, 3 blocks now?
That leads me to believe that the end block of the 7 (Or 6, I forget) year plan will be about him. He has been referenced in several blocks since innastrad.
I always thought it'd be sick to see a magic game actually play out with more than just cards. 2 wizards standing on mountains across from each other summoning monsters and hurling spells at each other. I'm surprised they haven't at least attempted that with the video games....or maybe I'm not. That'd be some serious programming and art work.
Something's different about the journey into nyx trailer. Yeah. There are Phyrexians in it. Oh yeah. That's right. She's from Mirrodin, now known as New Phyrexia. With her gone, well, what happens to them?
Elspeth, The Returned. The next B/W planeswalker... OH HELLS YES! I LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING!!! (oh....sorry Elspeth... but it'll really make the story that much more interesting/heartrending/omg this is awesome)
And if you had payed attention to my last comment, you might actually know what I'm saying. Instead, you're repeating what's been said. But please, inform of the "many" ways there are to kill immortal gods, please...
Does the last video have frames added to it? Can't remember the last vid having originally the scene of Karn and Elash Norn in it, at least not so clearly.
Guess who's back.
Back again.
Theros back.
Tell a friend.
So Heliod portrays the Gods as childish superpowered
jerks and then says :" And I am Heliod, the GREATEST of these !"
Subtle foreshadowing FTW :D

Did anybody else catch the "Or do they" whispered after "True heroes never die"?

Does anyone else think that erebos is the coolest of the gods after watching these trailers?
I would but Keranos and Purphoros beat him for me
No, I still like Kruphix

Heliod- "And I am Heliod, the greatest of these(gods)". I guess this explains why he is used in every standard constructed deck, oh wait.
One of White's major flawys is pride. They always believe they are right and everyone else is wrong.
Darth Fall that isn't a characteristic of white, its actually a characteristic of black. Of course personalities aren't strictly tied to the color wheel the way types of magic are, if they were storytelling would be boring.

Hello there
Truly Epic. WOTC is setting us up for something huge here. The music for the JOU trailer sends chills down my spine, and I don't know what to expect.
Heliod, God of the "sunbody better kill elspeth or I'll do it myself!"
Three things.
1) additional scene at 4:26
2) additional scene at 4:40
3) additional scene at the end
Also, Ajani's appearance at 5:27.
With war of the spark coming, I'm seeing Bolas's horns everywhere. Here, in Xenagos's horns.
I love this block.
So much epicness.
a new Innistrad block? the crown thing at the end seemed like that shape around her face
I want MTG to start doing this for all the Expansions! A nice little "Movie" for the end of a block. Wrapping things up Nicely
elesh norn, karn, and koth showing up makes journey into nyx trailer so much better.
Has there been any other "Reels" such as this for previous editions of Magic? I have seen this clip more than a dozen times by now, and would love to see a similar clip. :)
I keep expecting Arthas theme to begin playing midway in the first video..."For one day, you will be king..."
the end is when elspeth kills xenagos (the flash of light) and that caused her 'death' as well. the end of the 'watcher' hallway is the broken "Godsend" sitting before elspeths mask, and it lighting up is probably her being resurected via a god to do his will this time.

I wonder how long, if, we will see resurection of Elspeth and what form will that take. Theros overall a great block and Wizards done a good job with storyline. However, after all the blocks we had in last couple of years, I wonder when will we return to Dominaria. Next block won't be that but it would be about time
daaaamn that ending is gread looking forward what comes!! nice
Did anyone else see Karn and Elesh Norn in here briefly?

So after seeing that ending... Should we expect a zombie Elspeth? Champion of Erebos/Death?
I would certainly hope so, that would be badass. Not to mention it would give her a chance for revenge against Heliod.

I doubt that. But I believe that she is gonna be relevant again at some point in the magic story. They did not want to get rid of her completely.
Well, at least we can take comfort in the fact that Erebos will treat Elspeth better than Heliod ever did for however long she'll stay in the Underworld.
I'd love to know the names of the voice actors, they all are absolutely amazing!
These trailers that were made of more 2D, card arts were better imo. Too much epicness!
"Open your eyes, Elspeth. Let's go howl at that moon."
And remember, Theros fans, this is Theros, so a W/B Elspeth the Returned is NOT out of the question for the future.
I really just wish we got to see more of the Underworld in the cards.
Other than that, wonder what's gonna happen to Elspeth from here on out?
White/Black Returned Elspeth Planeswalker card?
My only quistion is why did Heliod not kill Ajani as well. He knev he was helping Elspeth???
***** could be. But it is a sad story abort Elspeth. But it will keep me interested, what happens next. My bet is that Elspeth will return. But as pawn of Erobos. Then later in the Block she will be released, maybe by Ajani, and take her revenge on Heliod and Erobos!!!
Anybody know where I can find the music in these trailers?
I hope Elsbeth returns as a creature. Then she can regain her planeswalker powers through more magic.
At 3:14 we get a glimpse of Hero's Downfall. For what the card itself portrays, the fact that the soldier just gets walked over is pretty anticlimactic.
5:56 what does it mean? B\W Elspeth card where she wears a returned mask?
Did anyone else notice at 6:25 you can see a sword that looks like Elspeth's weapon?
I really want to make an Erebos Commander deck right now.
+Ben Peterson Sincere and Really Alluring Voice: 3 cost instant spell: Tap all target opponent's nonland permanents, they do not untap during their next untap step.
The only thing that bugs me: Was there a red/green god before xenagos? WIll there be one after him?
Elspeth is coming back for you theros!
Pls do more it is awsome
Ajani has seen this happen way too much.
After seeing what happened to Elspeth, now I'm actually afraid of what will happen to Sarkhan on Tarkir.
What if Nicol Bolas makes a return on Tarkir?
gydrah4244 he did, the evil spirit of him is bolas, and his other spirit is a ghost
Why are random Phyrexians (and Koth) popping up every now and then?
Captain! :D
What is the purpose of those fading images of Mirrodin? Who is the fading man after Koth? What is that mask at the end?
Horváth Bence all three point towards elspeth. karn and norn represents elspeth's involvement in new Phyrexia. the one with koth and Daxos (elspeth's love interest) shows those she worked with and betrayed or abandoned and the last just shows that elspeth is now a returned
We need a return to Theros.
You got it
The trailer for return to theros: underworld is already here.
Why when showing Karn and Koth did they not show Venser?!
That is a a traditional greco/roman wreath of victory on his head, not horns. Nice idea but its a no go.
Was that Tezzeret's Metal arm at 5:04
I always thought it'd be sick to see a magic game actually play out with more than just cards.
_P[-]4NT0M_ tezzert
Elspeth, The Returned. The next B/W planeswalker... OH HELLS YES! I LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING!!! (oh....sorry Elspeth... but it'll really make the story that much more interesting/heartrending/omg this is awesome)
We need to have a return to Theros block in about 5 years or so. And have it end with the death of Heliod and Erebos
So basically God of War?
I don't think you quite get that the gods are just slightly too immortal for that...
Alex Hutt Tell that to Xenagos. Oh wait...!
Alex Hutt I can think of many ways to kill the gods, hell, Heliod provided us with the very weapon to kill them.
And if you had payed attention to my last comment, you might actually know what I'm saying. Instead, you're repeating what's been said. But please, inform of the "many" ways there are to kill immortal gods, please...
soooo Elspeth is going to have godsend on her face mask thing?
I just got the hilarious image of the her wearing the sword, blade and all, on her face as a mask :p
5:05 "True Heroes never die"
What could that mean?
Does the last video have frames added to it? Can't remember the last vid having originally the scene of Karn and Elash Norn in it, at least not so clearly.
Karn, Koth, Elesh Norn, and Daxos were not in the original trailer, no. They were added for this.
It does.
So, Erebos voiced the Journey into Nyx trailer?
Oh! A extra bit at the end...
whats the song in the 3rd trailer.. ? i run a D&D group and could use the song ?
Elspeth, Death's Champion, calling it right now
