Imagine if drew was the main character instead of being killed off in the opening scene. Drew made a smart choice. I don’t think the film would have been successful if drew was the main character
At the time, she actually admitted she was just worried the film would flop (since horror was dead at that point) and it'd ruin her career so she suggested playing that role to play it safe. And Wes was depressed that they lost their star so she promised she'd promote it the same way she would if she was the lead... and then Wes realized it would make the audience not know what to expect if they killed off the projected star attachment... so it wasn't her genuine foresight that made her change roles. She just sells it like that today, out of respect for the film.
"It's Drew Barrymore. There's no way she's gonna get killed." 100% my mindset watching that movie back then. She was on all the posters, almost front and center and at the time, was the biggest name in the cast. What a shocking, amazing opening for the entire franchise.
@@Deisi666no, but she did play a hand in getting legendary horror genre director Wes Craven to sign on to direct what became one of the genre’s signature film franchises. She also gave up the lead role of Sydney, which went to Neve Campbell instead. What she got was one of the iconic opening scenes in 1990s film, and the audience was shocked seeing a star of Drew’s caliber being killed off in the first scene. As Drew and Christine Taylor explain here though, it was all really a jump off point for Drew’s production company to get started, and it supported many of her projects that came later like Never Been Kissed and Charlie’s Angels.
@bernardwylie9760 Yes I got all of that but thank you for your thorough explanation 😊 I just thought I heard her say that she had a part in directing Scream, but i guess i misunderstood 😆 I first saw Scream at like 10 years old and I'm now a full grown adult -which by the way ew! 😆 - and I've seen all the Scream movies and can't wait for the next one.
It wouldn't have made 100 million dollars at the box office and nobody else would have distributed the movie. The scream franchise was enormous for dimension films. 300 million. That was what the female producer of scream said. Harvey weinstein was the only game in town when it came to making independent films in the 1990s
50 First Dates, E.T., Firestarter, The Wedding Singer, on up to later films for her like Whip It and Going the Distance. Drew's really one of those performers we watched grow up and ourselves grew up with. Certified legend.
@@theblackcarriebradshaw Do it. (Never Been Kissed) Then make sure to watch 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer, Blended, Fever Pitch, Boys on the Side, Ever After, Music and Lyrics, Santa Clarita Diet, Whip It, and Riding in Cars With Boys. 😊
Drew was great in the beginning of Scream. The acting was perfect the house was perfect the direction was perfect. It’s one of the best 10 minutes in all of film. Everything worked in that scene.
I also do remember working on that project way back then. Im talking about the Scream . Yes, Drew is telling completely the truth of the real behind the scene , the real pre - production initial stage . She gets killed off was her very original idea. 😂👍
People forget that Drew was on her way out in Hollywood at this time. Shocking, yes. But Drew was not the same Drew of today. She was totally being dismissed as a Lindsay Lohan of the 90s.
It’s been almost 30 years and it’s still such an iconic scene in horror and pop culture. Even today at a costume party you could pass any girl in a blonde bob wig covered in blood and you’d immediately say: “Oh, you’re Drew Barrymore in SCREAM!”
I remember working at the movie theater and when this came out we hadn’t seen drew in a whole lot of films and I watched this movie with all my coworkers before it even came out and I was sooo floored to see how they killed her off right at the beginning. Iconic!!! Genius idea, I love this movie and it was the “Halloween & Friday the 13th” of our time in the late 90s.
I loved Hey Dude! growing up. So glad to see they're talking about it and bringing it back into the zeitgeist a little. Also, I LOVE that it was Drew who chose Wes Craven and helped get this movie made. Amazing.
I read from more sources she was considered for an Oscar nom and honestly it would have been well deserved..... The writing was brilliant but Drew's character's progress from being a flirt to a victim fighting for her life..... Brilliant!
Omg i Love Scream!! Never Been Kissed, Ever After Doppelganger!! Omg Christine Taylor is awaome too!! Loved her in the Brady Movies as Marcia Brady. I remember her in tv adaption of Party Girl.
Drew should’ve been nominated for her role in Scream. That “Scream” opening is not regarded as one of the best ever, only because of the genre of the movie. Drew as Casey Becker was Oscar worthy.
Went to the movies and saw this movie because Drew was in the movie when she gets killed first the way it was done!!! I was hooked in!!!!!!!!! Great and smart move !!!
Picture this... Scream 7 starts with Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) walking out of Woodsboro High School, Sidney walks by with Tatum you overhear her talking about Billy. She's crossing the road and a car almost hits her, behind the wheel of the car we see a hand with a diamond ring. The car swerves around and beeps as Sidney notices and rolls her eyes, "what's wrong with people?" Flash forward to today, Sidney moves back to Woodsboro and is dropping off her daughter at Woodsboro High School, a car is following Sidney home and tries to run her off the road. Behind the wheel is the same Diamond ring. She gets home and finds her house is ransacked and a mask of ghost face sits on her counter top with the note... "watch your back..Sidney."
Funny she wound back to Charlie's Angels. When she was telling her cast switch idea for Scream, it reminded me how Kate Jackson, who helped with CA's setup, was supposed to be Kelly , but she thought it more interesting to have the most sophisticated one (Smith) play the scrappy streetwise orphan. Both ladies were very right.
Everyone talks about how Neve Campbell is the face of the Scream franchise, but Drew Barrymore doesn’t get enough recognition for her 15+ minutes of fame.
I have to confess something. I saw scream in a cinema when it got out. When he ask you if you know who is the killer in "Friday the 13th" and you answer wrong I yelled at you terrible words
This movie literally changed horror for the next decade. I know what you did last summer etc. So many scream type movies. One that doesn't get enough respect is Wes Craven's New Nightmare which came out before scream and was self aware and meta. Horror was dead in 1996 due to silence of the lambs, so people were making thrillers instead of horror, and sequels which were low budget for 80s films. The 90s was all lower budget sequels to 80s hits.
She plays it down, but E.T. was A BIG deal for her, (She stole every scene) and she was a successful child actress WAY before Scream. She wasn’t always a B movie bit player. Not to mention, a lot of people don’t know this, but she also famously posed for Playboy magazine, and was a model for Guess jeans and parfum, as well as many other designer products. In her early to mid-20’s, you could not go to a store that sold books and not see her face on one of many magazines. She was basically the Scarlett Johansson of her time. Drew was on fire long before Scream. Entrepreneurs always find a way. Not to mention her family name. Good or bad, Drew Barrymore has always made headlines.
Do they mention The Craft, the teen horror movie that preceded Scream and pretty much laid he foundation for the teen horror movie cycle of the late 90s? I mention it because Christine Taylor starred in that film as a enjoyably loathesome Laura Lizzie.
Saw it in theaters and it was incredibly shocking. Very smart move by Drew. No one expected it. Such a masterpiece of filmmaking.

I was right there with you. I remember leaving the theatre just glowing cause it was so good!

Drew in SCREAM was an absolute game changing now ICONIC scene. Everything about it just legendary.
dang I didn't know Drew basically helped construct "Scream" into what it turned out to be, and to do that at 20 years old is pretty impressive
I know right?! But I don´t quite fully understand, did she direct Scream?

Also means she had to deal with Harvey Weinstein. Scream could have been a better experience if he didn’t purchase the script

I watched Scream sooooo many times.. Never Been Kissed.. especially Charlie’s Angel’s ! She was such a big part of my childhood ! Love her so much 💕
I watched scream many times as well ✅✅✅✅ but i need to watch never been kissed

Also none of the actors meeting the Ghostface voice actor helps sell the looks of terror on the actor’s faces
Casey Becker is absolutely iconic! Thank you for bringing Wes to my favourite horror series ever :)
That movie really re-charged Wes Craven's career...brought him back into the mainstream in a big way.
Drew is a good Producer! She has good instincts about people!
drew barrymore is a true creative genius ❤
I also do remember working on that project way back then. Im talking about the Scream . Yes, Drew is telling completely the truth of the real behind the scene , the real pre - production initial stage . She gets killed off was her very original idea. 😂👍
SCREAM is and will always be my favorite Horror Franchise

I'll forever be a Drew Barrymore fan!
Scream is hands down my fave movie !
I love this franchise ❤
Drew produce so many of my favorite movies. Never been kissed is CLASSIC! But I am most grateful for her production of Donnie Darko!
Scream is still GOAT. Drew was amazing. Also Hey Dude 🤩🤩🤩 i loved that show as a kid

Drew really got her life turned around & made something of herself. 👍👍
Fascinating how she manuevered this film into being.
Her scene is forever Iconic
Scream is her best film period
I loved Hey Dude! growing up. So glad to see they're talking about it and bringing it back into the zeitgeist a little. Also, I LOVE that it was Drew who chose Wes Craven and helped get this movie made. Amazing.
I forgot she was in this movie 😊😊😊 she did an amazing job. !!!!!!
Great job, Drew!!
We love your show drew barrymore
I’ve never heard this story. So cool. It’s different from I heard in 1996 and from what Wes Craven said so this is def interesting 😊
Curious if Wes Craven liked the script when he first read it. It really was pretty different from what he was doing at the time, and before.
I read from more sources she was considered for an Oscar nom and honestly it would have been well deserved.....
The writing was brilliant but Drew's character's progress from being a flirt to a victim fighting for her life..... Brilliant!
I loved Hey Dude and had a huge crush on David.
Her scene in Scream made me love horror movies again in the 90’s.
I still love that movie
I have said this so many times: those opening 13 minutes of Scream were so important for her career.
Omg i Love Scream!! Never Been Kissed, Ever After Doppelganger!! Omg Christine Taylor is awaome too!! Loved her in the Brady Movies as Marcia Brady. I remember her in tv adaption of Party Girl.
A Little The Wedding Singer reunion. 😊

I honestly would like her to play in a horror movie again. Would be great tbh.

Incredible that Drew was actually booked to play Neve Campbell’s part and she chose to play Casey Becker instead!

Drew plz give us Charlie’s angels 3 PLEASE GOD!! ❤❤❤😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
The thing I remember from the movie "Scream" is that Ms. Barrymore's sweater didn't seem to keep her very warm.
Everyone talks about how Neve Campbell is the face of the Scream franchise, but Drew Barrymore doesn’t get enough recognition for her 15+ minutes of fame.

It was also her idea to wear a wig for the film, and the one she chose was because she said she wanted to look like Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface.
✨💖✨😍✨🤩💥

👍🏼👍🏻🖤❤
I didn’t know she came to Wes with the script
Who is the guy on the couch talking? He looks so familiar
He was in Hey Dude on nickelodeon.
And he played Josh In Sabrina The Teenage Witch
SCREAMing woman
Funny how that was considered a "B movie" at the time? Like WHAAAT??? 💀😳
Pigeon holed hahahaha
Enough of the Scream talk. I want someone to talk to her about Doppelgänger 😆
Wasnt she only in it for like 60 seconds lol i always have to be reminded she was in it. I also wasnt a fan of any of those movies.
He is looking old.
cool. heart
