Hilly Kristal was the man. He would let any band play his club CBGB's as long as they played "original music"...and look what the result was! The greatest alternative rock bands of all time. Television, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Talking Heads.
People say what they want, but this is the best induction speech I have ver heard and I have seen a lot of them. That feeling when something happens and your life changes. Kiedis conveyed that well. Other speeches.

I grew up in in a small country town in Victoria, Australia my late brother introduced the Talking Heads to me, and it has been a love affair of 31 years, I say the best group of artists that has ever been produced! Many happy times with your music!!
Personally I think the best part was when they brought Hilly Kristal on stage to thank him. Honestly...how many owners of how many clubs/bars do you see thanked at something like this?
Always loved the Heads. Tina is amazing. She is still so very beautiful after all these years. And her talent on bass and the band's talent is still unmatched and so important. Thank you Talking Heads for all that you were, all that you touched, and all that is real.

Who can ever forget hearing Psycho Killer for the first time. The Talking Heads are one of the best bands to ever have played. Their music is timeless for me. Love you Talking Heads! If you ever play again I'll be there to listen.
This speech is so true. I remember where I was when I first time in my life hear Talking Heads - it was in small cafe when I was with my (now ex)girlfriend and someone took "Speaking in tounges" vinyl and played it. I was totally shocked that music like this could even exist and sit there to hear the whole album.
I love how he reacts to his random thought switches. Also in the 15 seconds from "nobody knew they were there!" he punctuates things with dance moves from 3 different eras.
Auramyna okay so I know he's strange, eccentric or what have you, but the way he is acting from about the 15:20 mark on, is it just me or does he look like he's either extremely nervous, or very high on some kind of stimulant drug like meth amphetamines or another form of speed? And look at the facial expressions of his band mates, like they're embarrassed or something.
My first introduction to the talking heads was during the Mtv video era. They played the once in a lifetime video. Music was going in all sorts of directions at that time, and theirs was one of them. After all these years, I am here, stopping by to say thanks, for making me feel smart too.

In the 80s, they were “new wave” pioneers who inspired untold numbers of musicians yet again. They spearheaded the use of digital audio recording in a live setting. It’s very difficult to overstate the influence of the talking heads
I first heard pyschokiller in 1977 too - WYSP 94.1 Philadelphia. Alone in the bedroom I shared with my sister, turning up the speakers I’d been admonished to be careful of. It couldn’t be helped. Had to wait anxiously through a couple more songs after it finished to finally hear the DJ say who was performing this amazing song. Thank you wysp and thank you talking heads. One of a small number of bands I loved on first listen and for the rest of my life. And the days go by ....
Wow....saw the Talking Heads in 1983 as a senior in HS......surprised to hear on this video that they hadn't played live in 18 years prior to this induction.......
I’d heard Take Me To The River on the radio when it first came out, but I wasn’t particularly moved by it. I liked it, but nothing spectacular. My first time experiencing Taking Heads was when I saw SMS at the theater. What a moment! I was absolutely mesmerized and a huge Talking Heads fan from that day on. Immediately left the theater and began buying all their albums beginning with their current release at the time Little Creatures. Still listening after all these years and still among my favorite bands of all time.
Not that I think it was intentional, but Jonathan Demme should have gotten a mention here. I know the Talking Heads have so much incredible music, but Stop Making Sense is so crucial to their history, and arguably their greatest hits album. Seriously, that album alone sort of defines them for many fans and there isn't really anything else you need. And Jonathan is incredibly important to that and just am surprised David didn't mention him. Without that film and soundtrack I truly don't know how well they'd be remembered today. They obviously should have been, but that was one of those perfect capsules that, thank god, everyone loved and cherished. Still the greatest concert film of all time.
Totally agree, I was waiting for Tina to add Demme to the long list of names she mentioned so nicely. But by the time she got to the roadies I thought, OK that job must have been assigned to another member of the band. Not. Would also have been nice to hear mention of Alex Weir, Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt, who surely were all watching this. Anyway, What. A. Band.
Jonathan Demme has passed on. And TTH had already hit their peak before that film was made. Brian Eno was far more important in the band's evolution. (Not surprised that Tina didn't mention him, but figured David would.)
"Move on"??? He moved away a long time ago and does brilliant music, ever buy a record? They are not a band to just sell tickets and be at your disposal when you want. Very selfish response I think.
Watching them perform "Take me to the river" on SNL and started buttoning my shirt to the top like David Byrne and noticing other kids at school doing the same thing. Talking Heads were then and still ahead of their time.
David was so cool to be able to remember all those personality checks and all those different thoughts that everyone has to remember to live in this world of ours.
RHCP and Talking Heads are my fave bands. I remember the first time I heard Talking Heads too. It was "Road to Nowhere" during the credits of Little Monsters (1989), I think I was about 9 and I was like, "Aw yiss!".
Is obviously *the stylistic connection between Talking Heads and Red Hot Chili Peppers = The Funk infusion to Alternative Rock* , since the same first TH lp , but very enhanced on "Fear of Music", "Remain in Light" and "Stop Making Sense" LPs.
That's an excellent song. I think the first song I actually heard, I saw the video on MTV for 'Once in a Lifetime' and I was like "wow, this is really good. What a refreshing sound (especially compared to all of the Van Hallen and other crap that MTV played at the time).
great band ,nice people im glad they stopped when they did.i was lucky to see them live and i still watch them live now.i would travel anywhere to see them
We have to make allowances for David. David is what David is. I do know he is an amazing talent and and Talking Heads did change my life and he was the driving force behind them. Without him there would have been no Talking heads. Stop Making Sense is one of the all time greatest concerts. David has done so many other impressive things as well. Writing books and designing bicycle stands are just two of them. Many brilliant people can be on the edge but fortunately he is still with us and still being very creative. Also Tina's speech here was really great She really gave a great analysis of the problems in the recording industry and how things should work. She and David basically won't talk to each other but that didn't stop Talking Heads from producing life changing music.
Tina was a gorgeous in 1981, and still is! Still seems to have a great soul! She's my -- and Mr. Franz's' -- favorite fellow club member! They're ALL amazing, though!
Like other bands, Talking Heads existed at a certain time and in a certain dimension. Trying to come together so many years later with some semblance of similarity "so far back" must have been weighing on them, David in particular. When you change so much over time, it gets really difficult to come together (like a reunion with an ex).
I remember the first TH song I heard as well. Remember where I was, too. I was at my friend Bruce's dorm room in 1978 and he put on "Once In a Lifetime". I thought that was the sexiest, most thrilling rock song I had ever heard.
I was in awe of the Beatles and the Stones and yes they took what we had and fed it back to us but I felt a part of the Talking Heads because they were from and did the things I did and I love them for that and we are just so fridge thankful for you guys and girl to create what you did in the way you did it so THANK YOU SO MUCH and Keep Thanking THE LORD BECAUSE HE IS NOT ONLY WATCHING BUT HES LISTENING TOO..
@@yellowclouds3722 David didn't have a meltdown, per se, he just moved on to do his own thing. The only real problem was that he didnt tell anyone else in the band about it before he did it. Also, if anyone had a meltdown, it was Tina. She's made some WILD accusations against David.
I actually remember hearing Talking Heads for the first time too. :) Take Me To The River performed on SNL. Haven't been able to find that performance anywhere since though.
I also remember perfectly first time heard them, it was Fear of Music. still can't get tired of it. Heaven is a place. .. where music never ceases to play
It sounds cheesy but the first Talking Heads experience I clearly remeber was when my Mom and Dad used to sing Stay Up Late to me when I was a little kid. It also means a lot to me because for their first dance at their wedding was This Must Be the Place.
Beautiful video, truly, thank you, observing the tail end of the days when music was real, generated by artists and composers and not by super-producers and the other, myriad money interests. Composers learned to keep hold of their copyright in the 80's and that was their death warrant. So, the great days are long gone for the music industry and the culture, but we have the recordings and videos like these. Thanks.
it wasn't just about Byrne's feelings. His relationship with Tina became awful and it wasn't entirely his fault. She's said some mean-spirited and weird things about him publicly - a lot of it while the band was still together.
So well said and express!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you! Oh.. its a very late comment (2017 , I was too busy being homeless / living in my pick truck because i had lost almost everything due to the recession and so worried about my Dad who had terminal cancer .) better late than never to good comment here. :)
Anthony Kedis, Thank you for stating the truth about the talking heads. I thought I was the only one who felt them in my brain, soul and heart. I still dance like crazy when I listen to The Talking Heads. Thank you for sharing your beautiful soul's with this universe. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
2 things I love in one video!! Long live the RHCP and talking heads!Tina sounds soooooo not happy to be there. It really saddens me that we'll probably never see them together again. Chris's speech was way too short. Dave and Jerry sounded pretty good though. R.I.P. to the legendary bernie worell!
I remember when I first heard the bassline on Psycho Killer. I was in love from then. Then I realised it was a woman playing, I'd never seen that before. A women, a tiny woman with a massive bass and a massive sound.
Love...
She is among top bassist I know, and didnt she and her partner play in Gorillaz? And then there’s TomTom Club.
And to think she had no idea what a bass was until she met David and he taught her a few cords and she ran with it.
Anthony gave such a beautiful, vulnerable intro. Loved it.
David Byrne is the DEFINITION of what it means to be an ARTIST.
Weirdly inspiring, Inspiringly weird
@Bee Vee Bowie was THE artist scholar
@Bee Vee You misspelled David Byrne.
You mean a singer who can't sing on pitch?
And what is an A.R.T.I.S.T.? You can't mean artist, because that's not how words are defined (and there are greater musicians).
Such a rambling and understandable speak from Keidis. These guys were extraordinary!

I didn't know it was them for years, but I loved that song from the first time those credits rolled!
great band ,nice people im glad they stopped when they did.i was lucky to see them live and i still watch them live now.i would travel anywhere to see them
I like how David's solution to meet the microphone was to awkwardly squat sideways next to it
He may suffer from acute back pain when he had to bend over , as many of us tall people do. consider that.
@@ichhasseamerika You may ask yourself how did he deal with the pain.
@@g00gleminus96 And you might find yourself at the wheel of a large automobile. . .
All I can say is every time I watch it makes me smile so wide! So many great moments in all the speeches
Why won't they talk to each other ?
He is sonsweet and grateful. Brings tears to my eyes
Tina was a gorgeous in 1981, and still is! Still seems to have a great soul! She's my -- and Mr. Franz's' -- favorite fellow club member! They're ALL amazing, though!
Those are some beautiful heartfelt words right there. Well articulated, Anthony.
The band didn't thank Anthony Kiedis for his kind and humble speech.
Maybe it's because Kiedis kept calling them 'THE' Talking Heads...
I loved it when Chris said "gave this band a happy ending". They should also induct Hilly Kristal, CBGB changed rock music entirely.
Hm, but didn't they split in 1991 after David had a meltdown with the rest of the band?
@@yellowclouds3722 David didn't have a meltdown, per se, he just moved on to do his own thing. The only real problem was that he didnt tell anyone else in the band about it before he did it.
Also, if anyone had a meltdown, it was Tina. She's made some WILD accusations against David.
All the "ums are what made this special. from the Heart,
I actually remember hearing Talking Heads for the first time too. :) Take Me To The River performed on SNL. Haven't been able to find that performance anywhere since though.
I also remember perfectly first time heard them, it was Fear of Music. still can't get tired of it. Heaven is a place. .. where music never ceases to play
I liked the part where Tina got so boring and long winded that David and Jerry started checking out the backdrop behind them.
Her hair is fuc@#n awesome! It looks fabulous on her
David Byrne hates public speaking lmao. I don't blame him I'd be the same
My whole life I have had Tina's bass lines stuck in my head but I never get sick of it ❤️
Not only does listening to them make me feel smart, but it makes me feel like being weird is okay.
Good and honest Tina. Love it. Good on you.
Thanks.
You can really tell Jerry loved the band and didn't like how it ended. It's a shame David couldn't put aside his feelings to keep it all together
it wasn't just about Byrne's feelings. His relationship with Tina became awful and it wasn't entirely his fault. She's said some mean-spirited and weird things about him publicly - a lot of it while the band was still together.
Treat people good...All people......After all music is universal....
David is me whenever I speak to anyone lmao
@Bee Vee it can be harder than it seems
@Bee Vee lmao like thats easy
2 things I love in one video!! Long live the RHCP and talking heads!Tina sounds soooooo not happy to be there. It really saddens me that we'll probably never see them together again. Chris's speech was way too short. Dave and Jerry sounded pretty good though. R.I.P. to the legendary bernie worell!
RIP Hilly Kristall
The Godfather of Punk Rock
The Godfather of Music!
Love that blouse that Tina's rocking.
they’re so weird… I LOVE IT
Saw them live summer 1983 at Forest Hills--fantastic show. Very sad they broke up...
