    Cherry/Mahogany w/ a Purple Heart snare. Shane, .... this was great, you should do more comparisons like this!

  • @scottculver5728
    @scottculver5728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I absolutely loved this comparison. Great job! In my humble opinion, the Cherry/ Mahogany stole my heart. I love that tone! The Purple Heart is my second favorite but the solid Cherry is right there on its heels! I’m in love with DW and their shells . The way they CRAFT each shell, with the different grain pattern, the artistry and the love for their craft is incredible! Congratulations to an amazing drum making company!

    Purpleheart definitely :)
    Please do a video with few off top brands you have in store, let's say Tama Star, Sonor Sq2, Gretsch Usa custom, Dw collectors, Pearl masterworks? :)
    This would be very useful for all drummers around the world so we would finally know the real difference between the top drum brands...

    • @ramencurry6672
      @ramencurry6672 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I think the difference with the Gretsch and DW is that DW will tend to get a bigger and beefier sound and more suited for the stage if you’re looking for aggressive drums. The Gretsch will lean more delicate sounding and usually preferred by studio guys for the recording environment but still great on stage but may not be as monstrous sounding as the DW if that’s your style. Kind of like red apples to green apples comparison.

  • @pibroch
    @pibroch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Cherry was the most “musical” for me in that each of the toms sang with the most defined pitch compared to the other two kits. Like playing a melody. No doubt this was aided by the cherry having a lack of boom compared to the other two. (I’m very attracted to playing kits where drums and cymbals have short decays where individual hits have clear separation.)

    Once again, you guys, nailed it!
    Great video and very instructive.
    I have a Purple Heart drum set custom made made in Brazil in 2007, and man, those Dws reminded how lucky i am to have such a sublime drum set for a fraction of the cost of any of these kits in the US.
    Punchy, loud when needed, yet dark, throaty and tone for days!
    Die-cast on everything, coated Ambassadors, and we're good to go!

    I started playing drums in 1980 and played for roughly 15 years of which 4 years I played professionally. I gave it up and just started again and 23 years later , wow is all I can say about DW drums, they are so awesome I can’t believe how amazing these drums sound and the hardware by itself is a reason to buy them if nothing else. I am amazed how the industry has advanced in quality and sound all around, even the PDP Concept maple drums sound amazing but if you can afford the Co,lector’s series, get them, worth every penny...

  • @BeardedTruth
    @BeardedTruth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I vote pure cherry for the bass and snare sound, maybe use purple heart for the two mounted toms, and use the hybrid for the floor toms. The kit should sound ALMOST as good as a Pearl kit.

The purple heart kit has amazing attack cut an fatness the floor tom an kick go nice an low the snare is one of my favorites out of all the snares I have!! My older maple DW kits are very warm an round with ample bottom!! Like you said touch to pick a winner all 3 kits you played were amazing I love my DW drums !! Keep up the good work peace Ed dilley

  • @FrankPCarpi
    @FrankPCarpi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Cherry/Mahogany is punchy and deeply resonating. I love the tone of each one, how can anyone say that the one is better except for customized matching to your niche, and genre for which you most often play? I do like the Ch/mahog the best for my style. That deep end just resonates with me and my beefy powerstroke, and yet it rings sweetly on ghost notes without cutting through too strongly. I love so many of the kits at DW, that IF I COULD afford it, I would go directly to meet with John to have him recommend the right kit for my style. I love the heavy jazz, psychedelic blend of something like Ozric Tentacles, or Idiot King on the song American Jingo.

  • @erick_fernandez_78910
    @erick_fernandez_78910 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Purple H Bass and snare drum was head n shoulders above through here. Also, another technique with a shootout like this is to tune the drums to their strengths rather than all the same because...they aren’t the same. Some will sound better in certain tunings by the nature of being different materials. Never heard of Purple Heart though. Would love to hear them in person. Cool video! There should be more of these.

    I thought I'd fall in love immediately with the purple heart kit, but ultimately I liked the all Cherry kit the most as it seemed to ring out the purest of all (listening with over-ear Nuraphones, important to note); however, if I would probably still take the Purple Heart snare and couple that with the all Cherry kit. Great job guys, thanks!

    Personally what this demonstrates to me is that the actual differences in a real world situation are as subtle as the 'b' in subtle. I was in a store today playing a Catalina Club rock and it sounded fantastic. High end drums are about pride of ownership, feeling good and appreciating fine craftsmanship, far more than superior sound quality and there's nothing wrong with that. Cherry Mahogany for me, because I love the look of that rich wood on my shell interiors.

He was playing a very cheap kit with horrible heads and cymbals worst than ZBT's. Man...this guy made that kit sound like a million bucks. So your rite. I'm not a fan of DW. I find thier overall sound to be boxy. In videos, and in the stores. However, the jazz series is nice, and the purple kit in this video is big, and lively. The hardware is devine!! From the flatbassed, to the heavy-duty. Wonderful engendering across the board. Drum-set wise, I'm in love with grestch, ludwig, George H Way kits. Qs ain't bad either. That big full sound does it for me.

    Gotta go with the purpleheart, mainly because of the snare. In my opinion, the undertones were a bit much on the other two sets, but I'm sure a little tuning could help. A very close second was the cherry/mahogany, I liked the toms best on this set, that snare just rang a little too much for my taste.

    Purple Heart for me. I like the slice and projection of the toms and snare. The kick had a really well rounded, meaty low end with tone that complimented the other drums. I’m with Shane...I’m ham fisted and the Purple Heart sounds like it’d suit my playing.

    purple heart i loved i think the floor toms were perfect maybe the largest one just a hair lower. i tune my kits to a fourth apart like the song" here comes the bride" i this this might have to be my next kit DW purple heart but i would need one or two more toms and bass drum i like big sets. i listened through apple AirPods pro with noise cancellation and and air pods max with noise cancellation. purple heart all the way

    I would pick the Bass from the cherry, the snare from the purpleheart and the toms from the cherry mahogany.

    TH-camrs...guess what? I just purchased THIS EXACT Purpleheart kit (order # 1087389). I dealt with Chuckie @ DrumCenterNH. It will be paired with Paiste Signature cymbals when it arrives. Maybe I'll post an unboxing and set-up video so you can continue to drool...LOL! I now have to work three jobs to pay it off, so...I'm off to work now. Stay tuned!
