It's about expressing the voice you have in such a way that it has an affect on the audience, which is something Lorde succeeds in here. Her voice wasn't made to belt, but she has terrific low and mid range. I also love how she, at 19, is the one doing this tribute. I said, holy shit, you're David Bowie! He said to me, and I'll never forget: "You've sussed me copper"... and he got in the limo. It's kinda sad to think that David couldn't live to listen to Melodrama one of the best albums of the decade where Lorde showed in fact that she was the future of music. RIP
I think it's very fitting that Lorde chose Life On Mars, because I think she kind of symbolizes the girl Bowie is talking about in the song. A girl with a lonely, detached homelife goes to the movies by herself because her friend didnt show, and uses the silver screen to escape reality, which in Lorde's case would be a microphone obviously. I dunno, to me her performance was great and pretty much encapsilated the feeling and emotion of the song better than anyone I've seen.

Can you please tell me the difference between "hating" and "hating on" when placed before a person in a sentence? Apart from being incorrect grammatically, I would have thought that with the penchant young people have for abbreviating speech and writing the normal "hating" on its own would be their word of choice, you know without the "on" bit after. You'd think that to criticise someone is to hate the person. I guess that's just the insidious aspect of the climate of political correctness we live in today. And therefore ugly phrasing ("Not hating on") ensues, because it sounds odd in a certain context. Of course nobody HATES an artist or their performance that they have no connection to whatsoever. Hate is an odd emotion in such a context. "Not to take away from Lady GaGa's performance, ..." or "Lady GaGa's performance notwithstanding, ..." would be the right thing for you to say. "Hate" is a loaded word.
I don't understand why 1,620 people, can dislike this? Its a tribute, to a man who was/is an icon, a legend, will live forever threw his music .... a "tribute to his life" .....
Love Lorde's voice here. This is the first time I've seen her with straightened hair instead of her trademark big brown curls. She looks good here. I like her smoky metallic eye makeup, too. Bowie and Lorde seem very similar - unique, artsy, intellectual singer-songwriters.
This girl moved me to tears, she isn't your conventional songbird, neither was David, but she was channelling enough of his magic for her own wonderful little tribute, and that band sounded amazing!
Space Oddity Rebel Rebel Let's Dance Ashes to Ashes Ziggy Stardust Fame Under Pressure Heroes Life on Mars (The Song They Used "Life on Mars" Was My Favourite Song You will be missed David Bowie)
OMG, I got chills listening to Lorde do justice to one of my very favorite Bowie tunes. David was smiling down on this very talented young lady, saying, well done, I'm sure!
Lady Gaga and Lord were an amazing performers. They did a special tribute that make us remember the amazing artist David Bowie was. It's not a competition. They both were very special. R.I.P David Bowie
Hating on tributes is like saying if a little kid drew a picture in tribute that it's an insult because it's just a stick figure and doesn't look like Bowie. Like are you kidding me.
+Nintendonix That just goes to show that his music lives on! I've been a fan since I was a kid (born in '89 but my parents were huge fans and played his stuff pretty much constantly) and I love seeing younger people discover his songs.
I took his existence for granted. I feel like a fool, why didn't I care when he lived? Now I'm happy that my loved ones are still alive, I will never take anyones existence for granted.
Julian McCartney most honest comment here. And i think many of us felt that way in most of Bowie's career, although the rest are too afraid to say it. Thats what happens when someone so unique and loving dies, friends and people are too afraid to realize they couldve loved him more.
Wow. Yes there was no call here for self promotion or over the top theatrics. Lorde's was just a no frills plain old heartfelt tribute. I understood Bowie's early assessment of Lorde as being the future after I noticed how much the music changed after Lorde's Grammy win. Changes and even imitations. Lorde is an original "break-the-mold" type like Bowie. If you don't like Lorde you just don't get it. Long live Ziggy Stardust.
@@gertj363 Both tributes were good in their own ways. Lorde on the emotional side and Gaga's on the artistic one, both which were part of Bowie's persona. Respect them.
There is one reason why Lorde took part, and that is because Bowie loved her, and saw her as the future for music, that is why his family wanted her to sing at The Brits. That is all that matters about why she did it. His family, (especially his son) hated Gaga's tribute, and they had nothing to do with it.
+Kelly Marie I'm not a big Lorde fan or a Bowie fan,, but I thought she done a fantastic job on this song. I'm not even a Gaga fan and her tribute just looked like a clown show...LOL. Like you Kelly I believe all that matters is why she did it and why she did just made it that much more special!
+Kelly Marie ,he said that Pixies would be the greatest band of 90's and he was wrong as we know,,i don't think Lorde is the future of music and if she is,i'd rather to be stuck in the past!
It was his opinion though, he just really liked her. Whether she changes modern music or not; who knows. I'm just happy he had a tribute from an artist he admired, that is what matters. :) thiago lima That is your opinion :) David Turner
THIS is how a Bowie tribute is done. It wasn't a Las Vegas show. It wasn't about anyone on that stage. The spotlight was only about Bowie, about the man and his music. This tribute was humble, modest, poignant, and simple, hosted by the people that David knew, worked with, loved, and admired. The BRITs did everything right with this. It was perfect.
He was a Giant. Right up there with Elvis, sinatra, michael Jackson ect. His contribution to the world of art is massive. And he was also the sexiest man who ever lived. World will never forget David bowie.
I remember discussing David Bowie’s passing with my brother, also David, he died too, suddenly on 30th January same year. He too loved David Bowie, it was a really bad year, to lose both in the same month my brother was 67
I'm a Kiwi, so proud that Lorde does as she does. Not only is this so epic, she displays so much beauty as she dose it. A fabulously beautiful young lady carrying the Kiwi flag while representing New Zealand in the recognition of arguably the greatest entertainer EVER
+adam laurents I really want Lorde and bowies band to make a album of His best hits but with Lorde singing, not because i think it would be better but i think it would be interesting
This is a TRIBUTE and all you guys can do is diss other amazing artists and complain, for fucks sake get a grip and just be thankful for all the work and effort that was put into remembering Bowie.
Its 2022 and I still cry like a baby watching this. I never met David Bowie but he was always in my life. I'm so grateful I got to see him with NIN and a few times after. This is a wonderful tribute. Bowie Forever.
If you can't appreciate the unique style of lorde, you're just as bad as the naysayers who said that Bowie was terrible when he first came out. Especially since her cover of an AMAZING song in its own rite isnt trying to be a carbon copy which would have ended badly (i.e. Lady Gaga)
Both tributes were good in their own ways. Lorde on the emotional side and Gaga's on the artistic one, both which were part of Bowie's persona. Respect them.
I grew up with David he was just a neighbour and schoolmate.he never changed when he came home every year to play a free concert in Beckenham.RIP David Bowie or Davy Jones as we knew you.
You can see when the lights come on and the music ends that Lorde was insanely nervous. She immediately goes back to her introverted mannerisms and just kind of takes in the moment (I'd imagine she was just thinking about David for a few seconds).
Interpreting such a great song without ruining it, but actually making it sound amazing and fresh as ever it's not a simple task, and she did it. That's what artists do.
lorde did a beautiful cover of this song! she did it really well and didnt do it differently from the original, just changed the pitch for her voice. and no one should be commenting hate on her appearence, thats negative and uncalled for. cmon people.
Gary Oldman spoke well, but for me the most moving thing for me was seeing Bowie's band playing without him there on stage fronting them. Goosebumps, man. I also thought Lorde did just fine, singing "Life On Mars?" her own way which is what Bowie would have wanted anyway.
+DarkeningSkies1 You are absolutely right! I felt so much for them. Imagine to have shared so much with the master and now he is gone...I still mourn his passing and I never knew him, I can't even begin to understand how they feel!
I could tell that this performance was important to her, because she fought to keep her emotions in check during the performance and sang them through her heart instead. She choked back her tears at the end; clearly she loved Bowie very much and I choked back some tears of my own to see that love pouring out of her.

+Dustshoe Who the F#$K cares
I don't understand why 1,620 people, can dislike this? Its a tribute, to a man who was/is an icon, a legend, will live forever threw his music .... a "tribute to his life" .....
+Samantha Chandler Most clips have haters seems Human nature. Lorde gets one in 33 here. Some maybe Gaga fans
+Samantha Chandler Most of them are trolls
+Isaac Ramos Sad ppl, with no lives ay!
Because Lord can't sing. She has a 2-3 note range and sounds suicidal. . It was a horrid flat performance. That's why people don't like it.
LMAO because you did waste your time listening said peice of turd.
7 years and still tearing up, he will always be missed and never, ever equaled
Love Lorde's voice here. This is the first time I've seen her with straightened hair instead of her trademark big brown curls. She looks good here. I like her smoky metallic eye makeup, too. Bowie and Lorde seem very similar - unique, artsy, intellectual singer-songwriters.
I'm not a massive fan of her solo work, but i suppose she is to 21st century pop as bowie was to 20th century rock, i have a lot of respect for her
@Rosida Andriyana Wtf does that have to do with anything?
Rosida Andriyana wha-
The Brits really know how to honor a legend, and the eloquent Gary Oldman is a class act.
This girl moved me to tears, she isn't your conventional songbird, neither was David, but she was channelling enough of his magic for her own wonderful little tribute, and that band sounded amazing!
Gary Oldman's contribution to this homage to our beloved David Bowie is absolutely gorgeous and deeply touching.
I would do ANYTHING for this cover to be put on Spotify
They decided against it because of the awful guitar solo during Life On Mars.
Space Oddity
Rebel Rebel
Let's Dance
Ashes to Ashes
Ziggy Stardust
Fame
Under Pressure
Heroes
Life on Mars
(The Song They Used "Life on Mars" Was My Favourite Song You will be missed David Bowie)
Incredible list of songs I think ashes to ashes is my favourite at the moment
This was an awful year - lost 2 of my fave singers - Bowie and Prince 😪😫😫
Gary oldman paying tribute to bowie..... speechless
2
OMG, I got chills listening to Lorde do justice to one of my very favorite Bowie tunes. David was smiling down on this very talented young lady, saying, well done, I'm sure!
I teared from the little montage and choked up hearing his band play his music, and teared up at the Heroes bit.
Lady Gaga and Lord were an amazing performers. They did a special tribute that make us remember the amazing artist David Bowie was. It's not a competition. They both were very special.
R.I.P David Bowie
Lorde*
Gaga !
I agree. Both tributes are AMAZING. LOVE DAVID BOWIE.
+Jere Macchini agree.
Bowie turned in his grave as soon as he learned that Gaga had made a tribute, she's a cunt. Cheers from the UK.
Hating on tributes is like saying if a little kid drew a picture in tribute that it's an insult because it's just a stick figure and doesn't look like Bowie. Like are you kidding me.
I've never seen this before.. Wonderful tribute... Hard to say goodbye to Bowie. I've been a fan for 40 years. A wonderful wonderful man and artist.
Totally agree with you except I've watched this many times.
Only been a fan for 2 years :'( Well, I was born in 1998.
+Nintendonix That just goes to show that his music lives on! I've been a fan since I was a kid (born in '89 but my parents were huge fans and played his stuff pretty much constantly) and I love seeing younger people discover his songs.
H LP Yees, David's music will live forever. Long live the king of all chamaleonic artists.
lorde
its took me over 4 yrs to finally be able to watch this whole video
The Brits got it just right and under an enormous amount of pressure Lorde and Bowie's wonderful band did the great man proud.
drees71 ok!!
You can hear the pain in Gary Oldman's voice. He as well as being a friend must have been his biggest fan.
And I imagining Sirius Black speak for James Potter (if u know what I mean), they're best friends.
Man David Bowie is literally the definition of icon. A true inspiration. He is one of the best musician ever.
This was the best tribute. Lady Gaga's was too over the top. This was heartbreaking in the sense we really felt Bowie's impact.
@@gertj363 My thoughts exactly.
Fn Americans screw everything up - I'm not proud of my country.
@@gertj363 Both tributes were good in their own ways. Lorde on the emotional side and Gaga's on the artistic one, both which were part of Bowie's persona. Respect them.
@@chor2336 lady gaga isn't to the point that Bowie's son was insulted. Sorry but you can like hers but i am not liking it.
There is one reason why Lorde took part, and that is because Bowie loved her, and saw her as the future for music, that is why his family wanted her to sing at The Brits. That is all that matters about why she did it. His family, (especially his son) hated Gaga's tribute, and they had nothing to do with it.
+Kelly Marie but it was awful - what a dull voice
:) thiago lima
That is your opinion :) David Turner
imagine the pressure on lorde here
She definitely would have felt Under Pressure
@@joseffwilliams7369 Oh that's clever
He's not dead.
He just went home.
Kingly duties called✨
THIS is how a Bowie tribute is done. It wasn't a Las Vegas show. It wasn't about anyone on that stage. The spotlight was only about Bowie, about the man and his music. This tribute was humble, modest, poignant, and simple, hosted by the people that David knew, worked with, loved, and admired. The BRITs did everything right with this. It was perfect.
Annie Lennox's words were so moving. Very emotional tribute. Rest in eternal peace David Bowie.
Prefer this tribute than Lady Gaga. This represented who Bowie was so much more than what he did.
Very emotional to Hear David's band perform this with Lorde.
I'll never be over his death
Me neither
Nobody with good taste does
Bowie and Freddie forevahhh ... I hope we go where they went...
He was a Giant. Right up there with Elvis, sinatra, michael Jackson ect. His contribution to the world of art is massive. And he was also the sexiest man who ever lived.
World will never forget David bowie.
Me neither
People hating on lorde, Bowie called her the future of music. He loved her work. He would've loved the tribute.
she is so cute, but an amazing voice. David was right about her...
RIP David, I will never forget you.
I remember discussing David Bowie’s passing with my brother, also David, he died too, suddenly on 30th January same year. He too loved David Bowie, it was a really bad year, to lose both in the same month my brother was 67
this is how you do a tribute, so emotional and calm nothing messy just a voice and emotion! beautiful lorde
have you seen her at the 2014 rock and roll hall of fame? she did great.
Lords has the perfect voice for This❤️
Alisha Fairbairn
Check out Sarah Blasko's cover on Live a Version (TH-cam has it)
Nah
Lorde nailed this. Bowie would be proud.
I'm a Kiwi, so proud that Lorde does as she does. Not only is this so epic, she displays so much beauty as she dose it. A fabulously beautiful young lady carrying the Kiwi flag while representing New Zealand in the recognition of arguably the greatest entertainer EVER
lorde is already highly respected in the industry.
i need a studio version of this tribute
IKR
YES
+adam laurents I really want Lorde and bowies band to make a album of His best hits but with Lorde singing, not because i think it would be better but i think it would be interesting
Yes!
+Lucas Wide YES!
He's not dead... he's just gone home... :'(
I’m fking crying
This :(
Pretty much ❤ ⭐️
Literally no hate for Lorde in comments.
Comment: - STOP HATING LORDE!!!
Rahul G STOP HATING LORDE ❤️❤️
I was thinking that, maybe there are people commenting that when it came out and the hate has been burried by people saying don't hate.
There was a lot of hate before actually
I'm a Gaga fan but i think this is how her tribute should have been like. More emotional and heartfelt and not rushed and flashy.
Where was Gaga here?
Crying my eyes out after this. RIP David Bowie, you meant to much to the world
I'm not a Lorde fan, but of all the tributes I've seen, hers was the only one that moved me. She "gets it."
+Nicholas Monks this performance made me a lorde fan
Well I'll certainly remember her after that, but maybe for different reasons.
Gary Oldman is such a genuine spirit.
I'd pay so much money for Lorde's cover on iTunes
Who else thinks that Gary Oldman should play Bowie's later years in a biopic?
I was thinking the same!
i think tilda swinton would be a great choice
David was very much against a biopic about him and Gary was his friend so he probably wouldn’t do it.
The great thing about Lorde is that she’s perfectly imperfect. This is the best Bowie tribute out there... David would be proud.
lorde did a beautiful cover of this song! she did it really well and didnt do it differently from the original, just changed the pitch for her voice. and no one should be commenting hate on her appearence, thats negative and uncalled for. cmon people.
She's performed with Nirvana and Bowie's band and isn't even 20.
I could tell that this performance was important to her, because she fought to keep her emotions in check during the performance and sang them through her heart instead. She choked back her tears at the end; clearly she loved Bowie very much and I choked back some tears of my own to see that love pouring out of her.
I love Lorde! I really respect her as an artist!!! Amazing!
