My wife was lucky, her roommate moved out shortly after school started and she never got another one the rest of that year. Me personally, I would rather live in my car then another dorm with a roommate. After freshman year we lived in off campus apartments together because we had a baby.

I got a dorm room to myself because I wrote to the admissions office and I told them I had Turrets and that I was OCD and had to clean things at 3 AM and that I played my French Horn at all hours.

4:02 . For all you incoming college students. If you’ve ever experienced a Waterpark washroom, I’d imagine the dorm washroom would be the same. Now imagine dealing with that for 8 months

Pro tip, never study near your dorm if you don’t have a single, it’s too crowded and distracted like he said. Just take a bit of time and go to the coffee shop/library, studying where you sleep is also unhealthy psychologically.

I had my own dorm room based on my disability so I had my own privacy. My door was always closed as I didn't want people to barge in unexpecting. As for noise, the easiest way to clear that out is put on some fans. Much more relaxing. As for communal bathrooms, if they are cleaned well everyday, I didn't have many issues with it. Though, when using the bathroom you always wear sandals. As for 'missing home' you want the best of both worlds. There are benefits to living at home and there's benefits to living away from home, and you want to have your cake and eat it too. The stay hydrated slogan, were you watching too much of "price is right', where Bob Barber would tell his audience to remember to spay and neuter their pets? If you stay too hydrated, that'll require more trips to your 'favorite' communal bathroom.

10 Things to like about the college forms in contrast. For points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, I'm biased, I had my own dorm room so I had plenty of privacy and alone time. Also use fan provides a constantly flow of air next to your bed so you don't hear people in the hallway. Point 6, I was never that worried, I rarely got sick. I think my worst instance was food poisoning. Point 7, communal bathrooms. They do get dirty at times, however I always wore sandals. If things were gross and dirty, you'd only have to look at it for a day as the bathrooms were cleaned daily by the custodian. If you want a bit more privacy with showering, then shower during non-peak times. Which brings me to another benefit of living to the dorms, you don't pay utility bills or monthly rent, you only pay for room and board once a semester which came out to about 400 dollars when I was living on campus. That's some inexpensive rent. With the dorm hallways smelling funky, I never had to worry about that because I loaded my room with air fresheners. Sometimes it was so strong, it made the hallway smell really good. Also in the showers, I used scented shampoo, so the bathroom never smelled bad for long. Point 8, for cooking, I remember in the basement of the dorm where I was going to school, they had a stove, however cooking to me was time consuming so an added benefit was going to the student dining halls because I was too lazy to cook. However, even with an all you can eat buffet, the food tasted like crap, so instead I would always eat at the university center where the food had higher quality ingredients for a few dollars more. Then on rainy days or days I didn't want to go out, I had my own small refrigerator and microwave plugged in where I could make my own after microwaving it on high for 3 or 4 minutes. When you mention how the food was repetitive, I'd argue that more for breakfast. The foods that make up breakfast are often limited. For me I wanted pizza or a burger for breakfast without it being an omelet. Point 9, it is your bed except for the mattress and wood/frames to hold it up. For me, I was used to sleeping in a twin sized bed so it was fine that the bed was smaller. I also had a soft mattress foam put underneath making me feel even more comfortable. Point 10, I didn't get too home sick unless it were the weekend. I happened to go to a suitcase college so on the weekends the campus was deserted. The ups to living in a dorm in my opinion: 1. Less Responsibility-don't have to pay for rent or utilities, instead I pay one flat room and board fee each semester. 2. If there's a problem with the internet or bathroom facilities, it's not your issue, you can always call up your RA and you have a custodian that cleans the hallways and bathrooms once a day. 3. Dorms are generally close to campus so it was quick walking distance. The closer to my classes the better, especially if it's raining or snowing. In addition, living on campus, I didn't have to worry about driving or taking a bus. The negatives to living in the dorms (keep in mind I had a room to myself). 1. Most dormitories you could only stay up to nine months out of the year, so if you liked living on campus, you constantly had to pack up your stuff and move at the end of every spring semester, to then move back to the fall. I went to school year round so having to move at least twice a year was no fun at all, especially for my parents who helped me to pack and unpack. 2. You had some interesting people that lived on your floor. If there was a sports game, you'd have some people yell and scream across the hallway. 3. Then of course you had some people that never cleaned up their room or who decide to wear the same clothes for three days in a row. Then you wonder why their rooms smell funky. 4. If you made some friends or got attached to them, living assignments always changed so it was often harder to keep the friendship going.
