    Aww man, what a score! Shelly was so creative. I used to work at GC in Sherman Oaks and they had a big portrait of Shelly at his drums on the stairway up to the drum section of the store. That letter/envelope in your video was addressed to his old Jazz club (Shelly's Manne-Hole, which is now the Velvet Marguerita). My parents used to go there and saw all kinds of Jazz giants. So glad those treasures ended up in your hands.

    This track has the plastic tubes on it: th-cam.com/video/uKru7ixSlPU/w-d-xo.html In fact the whole album, "Mannekind", has a lot of stuff from that box on it. The track "Infinity" was sampled by Dj Premier for the massive 90s hip hop track "Come Clean" by Jeru The Damaja

    Jake ... help ! I admit that I'm a 63-year-old newbie and people could say " stop commenting and read more" ... I get it, but I just kind of gave up on learning to play because my Yamaha Sound stage Custom 22" kick drum sounds like I stretched a garbage bag over the hoop...it's dead and muddy to the 10th power.
    I bought all new matching heads, Evans EC2 360 degree, two-ply, that came with a deadening foam ring. The batter head that was on it was an " EMAD" I believe. The resonant head is original black with no port cut in it. These drums are OLD, so the resonant head is old, the reason I say all this. . . can you tell me at least what setup I should have on my kick drum to get that low thud. I assume you might say that either the EC2 or the older EMAD is fine but I have to change the resonant head ... any information would be so helpful.
    Also, I read that I should have the proper beater, so could you recommend a beater to get that low end punch? I really like that low end sound, I bought a 14 x 6.5 snare, I have an 18" and 16" floor toms, with 13"and 12" rack toms.

    • @mattheasboelter5217
      @mattheasboelter5217 ปีที่แล้ว

      He has a video about kick drum tuning, you might want to start out with that. My personal experience is that it generally starts by making sure that each head is fully in tune with itself so you get a clear pitch out of it. Then you put it into the range you want it in. The reso head usually won't be the same pitch as the batter. I generally tune it higher, but I don't think that's a universal thing. This is mostly going to come from practice and experimentation. You should be able to make most drums sound great as long as the heads and the tuning are good. The beater makes a difference, but I suspect that it's not your problem here, unless you're trying to use something wildly inappropriate like a fluffy jazz beater. That's it's own cool sound, but I don't think it's what you want here. Just mess around and I'm sure you'll find the sound you're looking for.

      @@mattheasboelter5217 Thank you for that reply. I must have missed Jake kick drum video because I did search for one.
      I just read up some more about drum tuning and decided to pick up a Tune Bot device. 58HZ for batter, 87HZ for resonant head for my 22" kick. I bought a Pearl P-930 Denominator kick pedal with a reversible hard/felt head, and of course I have it set to use the felt head.
      One thing I read last night was to clear my "drum room" of any extra sound deadening article's, so I just spent a few hours today removing all these things from my den, where my drums are, what a difference it made to have nothing in front of the kick drum, it's like the drum can "project" the sound better.
      I had my drum head and resonant head way too loose, the beater on the kick was too close to the drum, but after adjusting it, it would just loosen again and again, so I upgraded the pedal, and I have to say, I can play faster now, it's a long board.
